Pretty much all roms nowadays are ext4, so you'll need to root using 3.0.0.6. You can just do this on top of 2.5.5. I would recommend the Syndicate rom. Use this to help you :
To check which cwm you have just boot into recovery. Stock recovery has blue letters, cwm 2.5 has green letters and cwm 3.0 has orange letters. There are a few good ones out there, but most are ext4 (different file system than current stock, which is rfs) which cwm 3.0. The 3 big ones, no particular order, are midnight rom 5.2 byor (build your own rom version) but the dev just had to quit developing due to family issues but still a rock solid rom. Acs frozen 1.1 and viper synergy rom (currently based off of eb13 but soon to be updated). Honestly, all 3 are good but with the way our phones are your best bet is to try one and see if you like because what works for me may not be the same for you. Any questions just ask, lots of people out here that would be happy to help.
I see tschofield just bet me to the punch lol
I just flashed mine to SyndicateROM Frozen. It's very smooth and my battery life has already increased. I just followed the video. I did get the rom flash error. it went fine the second time.
Actually the issue may be kernel related. Try flashing rom again, if that dont work try either vision or genocide kernels.
I have to admit, this is a very stable ROM. Fantastic, in fact. Loading this will make you a little despondent that the guys that wrote this don't work for Sammy. (We'd be so much farther by now if they did. Good talent truly is wasted.)
It's very much what you expected your phone to be when you bought it, before you were jaded. Not terribly flashy, mind you, but solid as can be. Flashy,k I think, goes to URBAN with CK's transitions. That's all we're after, isn't it? Something to show off?
Tell you what. Want flashy without the flashing? Buy SPB Shell. 15 bucks. That's right. Want stable? Syndicate is the way to go.
And soon we'll have Cyanogenmod. Then it's a whole new ballgame.....
wasted? how is talent wasted? you still got the stuff on your phone right?

I would suggest the Syndicate Frozen ROM but I guess it didn't like me. After not being able to launch my music player (force closed every time), Getting multiple forced close messages from android.phone and copying pictures to my SD card and them not showing up in the gallery but showing up in root explorer , I had to find me another rom.
Since yesterday I've been on the MidNIGHT ROM v5.2 (BYOR) and i'm impressed so far, the boot up screen is AMAZING and the Honeycomb battery theme looks great. I also like the MidNIGHT Dialer. This ROM is definitely one that should be tried out by anyone in search for a good stable ROM.
I have been reading a lot about rooting over the last couple of days. I really wanted to go with syndicate frozen, however I see a lot of people are having boot loop issues and other problems. Also I see that the vision kernel to fix these issues also bricking peoples phones on the xda forums. Is midnight rom a better choice or is syndicate frozen really a stable rom? Also didn't see what midnight rom overclock speed was.

A lot will depend on the phone. As an example, my phone doesn't seem to like Syndicate ROMs but other people have no issues.
Can't agree more! Every phone is different! I had to play around with a few to find one that fit my phone and my needs. I found midnight to work well for me. Everyone will have a different personal experience
Glad to see my Epic wasn't the only one that seemed to reject Syndicate Frozen. Im going on 3 days with the MidNIGHT 5.2 and I've had no problems this far...
I have been searching for a good link to midnight and a detailed explanation of everything on it but can't seem to get what am looking for. Can someone please point me in the right direction.

Lostandtired.com under his development section. Also about 12 threads under this one.

I agree, for us it's great! Part of me would rather see these developers who are doing this for the love of it making the big bucks working for the major companies. Just think how fast the updates would drop then! (Minus the red tape.)

I tried Syndicate, liked it, but couldn't really tell the difference between it and stock (nothing super major anyway). I am running Cyonagen Gingerbread 7.0.3.1 on my Evo, and absolutely love that, so I'm really looking forward for a Gingerbread ROM in the future.
Given that, I ended up going with EC05 Stock Plus (EC05 with certain Sprints stuff stripped) - which as the CIQ removed, TWS fixed, etc etc.
I like it because it's easy to restore my old DI18 ROM to look up information should I need it.
It was next to impossible to flash back to my DI18 ROM when I converted to EXT4 and tried out the Syndicate ROM. I'd much prefer to stay on RFS and be able to flash back to a back up if needed, from my DI18 days. In the future I may go back to EXT4 but RFS is working just fine, and EC05 is fast for me.
I think I know what you are talking about, but I think it may be safer if I assume I don't.
Lol, remind me and I'll walk you through it or get a .zip you can flash for it. Super easy once you know how. Just don't have the time to teach it at the moment.

Ugh...flashing my Epic is waaaay easier than my Captivate.
Have to back up the /efs file on my Captivate with the NV_Backup.bin, then use ODIN to factory restore, then master clear (wipes out the internal SD card so all data is lost!!) and then load new ROM... pain in the rear!!!
Thanks Kelmar for making your Epic root instructions so clear and such a piece of cake, compared to the pain in the butt Captivate!!!
This confirms that I will not be getting the Nexus S or any Android phone without an external SD card...such a pain to back up the internal SD card!!! Especially as you MUST erase everything before loading a new ROM... the Epic doesn't really require this.

Midnight is working great for me now. I wish I could have the Syndicate battery indicator and 3g/1x indicator.
Is the battery indicator the blue circle one? If so i can link you to that or several other ones if you want. Or you may want to flash a theme lots of good ones out there to choose from.
Can the rfs version be overclocked? Also how is the battery life on that rom?
Yes, but it may require a new kernel. I don't have the need to OC so I don't do it.
I have an extended battery so I'm not exactly a direct comparison, but right now my battery is at 73%. Off the charger at 6 this morning (now 10:15pm). All the other EC05 ROMs were probably pretty similar.

Yep, blue circle. And the 3g indicator is different, too.
