Default Best Rom to Flash??

I'm pretty sure this has already been asked, but if not, which is the best ROM, or the most popular ROM that everyone is digging? I'm tired of this 2.1 crap

A lot of people love SRF, but it personally wouldn't ever run right on my phone.

Personally, I'm using EC05 stock plus.

There are a few good ones out there. I cant speak for kelmars pick but im sure its great. 2 other solid picks would be urban fury by compkid123 and midnight rom 5.3 by ptfdmedic. Both of those are solid with very few complaints. Acs frozen 1.1.1 is very nice too and is solid as well. Whatever one you choose i would HIGHLY suggest to have journaling on. Alot less problems. Also being on phone i cant link but all of these are over at xda under epic development. Good luck.

Best advice to finding the best ROM to flash is to download them all and try them
Everyones opion is different just as everyons actual Epic is different
Some don't like overclocking, some don't like undervolting and others are the opposite.
I've been running SRF 1.1.1 since it was released and love it. However that doesn't stop me from having 7 ROMs, atleast 3-4 Kernels and a buttload of themes and tweaks loaded onto my SD card
Let us know what you try and how it goes

I am running the leaked Gingerbread EE03 ROM from ACS (here) with just about every available tweak. I have the EE03 Modem (also in that link). I have also flashed the Steel Blue Theme (here), if you go to the Steel Blue link you can see lots of screenshots of what that will look like (note: I have ADW Launcher so mine will look a little different, but that theme comes with 3 launchers baked in). It's not quite as snappy as ACS SRF 1.1.x but it is fully functional (GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth, etc.) and visually outstanding!

Shout out to the whole team at ACS for EE03 and to ringold24 for the theme!

You are correct in trying them all. Not only does everyones taste differ but so does our phones too. What works on one will not necessarily mean it will work on another. Sound advice sir:-)

Here is the link to all things Epic... click on "community roms" on that page and you will see all custom ROMS built for this beast. Enjoy!

could you flash what? the geniuses above me mentioned more than one ROM..were you referring to the one in the link? if so, that link had more than one ROM as well..be a lil more specific?

even then, I'm new to the flashing on the Epic, so I wouldn't want to give you the wrong information. I'm sure Kelmar or the other guys that have the "thank you's" can answer that question for you

Use clockwork mod 3.0.2.5 when you root and you can flash any ROM because it works with RFS and EXT4. The link I posted has any and everything that you need to know, from rooting, flashing, themes, and help with Odin. On the page click on "community roms" under the software section and you will find all of them. One other good ROM that is NOT on that link is the Bonsai ROM, which I am currently using. Just google Bonsai ROM and you will find their web page, create an account and download for free.

Read these 2 posts to give you an idea. First one is my interpretation of journaling.
And the second is a Devs answer
xda-developers - View Single Post - ROMS start force closing everything

xda-developers - View Single Post - ROMS start force closing everything

If you don't have it on you risk data corruption
But I've been running non journaling ROMs since I rooted my Epic and havent had any corruption issues yet

SRF hated my phone, too. I kept having to use Odin to unbrick my phone.

I was pretty happy with Midnight, but I'm starting to have issues with it, and getting worse and worse. I'm about to wipe and reflash it. I've had to do a battery pull at least every other day. Home keys light up, but no screen. And when I'm done with my phone and go to set it down, I always push the power button to shut the screen off, then set down. Well, now, when I do this, the screen shuts off, but then it flashes one time and goes back off. Annoying. Also, every time the phone boots up, LauncherPro force closes. Just once. Before it force closes, it's stupid slow and i basically can't do anything until I force it to restart or it force closes by itself.

Im currently using the Frankenstein theme. I tried out SRF and Midnight and Frankenstein is the one I like best so far. I have yet to try Viper, Anonymous, or the GB leak, but something tells me im going to stick with Frankenstein for a while before i try those. Only thing i didnt like about it was the boot animation, but it was pretty easy to change it.

I'm running SRF 1.1.1 and I love it so much, its very fast and I get great battery life with it. The performance reasons has stopped me from trying other ROM's (the old "if its not broke, don't fix it" mentality). I have started to get more adventurous though, yesterday I flashed the MIUI ROM (would love to see a stable version of this with everything working), and am probably gonna try Midnight ROM tomorrow just cuz all the ROMs are a lil different and want to try it.

Bonsai 4.1.1 is definitely the best. Moderate overclocking (1.1ghz) with undervolting and cpu governor built in. Best battery life I've ever had on this phone. Recommend over almost anything else for this phone.

lol there are some developers called bonsai that make games in the android market, but the bonsai being referred to here is a ROM. I was using it a while back and immediately noticed a pretty significant increase in battery life. I went back to frankenstein though because for some reason I would keep getting data errors. Couldnt pick up 3G or wifi for some reason.

I might try it again soon though because it couldve been that it wasnt flashed correctly or something.

Yes and yes (not to step on kelmar's toes). Many roms have kernels you can flash separately. Can't speak on bonsai, but srf 1.1.1 has been all good (1.0.1 didn't work for me either) . Took me 2 times to flash it right, fix permissions, and be up and running. I then odin'd the new modem. Then flashed the honeycomb fusion theme. Tweaked all my settings and such... very pleased so far. I'll prob keep this until rob drops another midnight.

Bonsai 4.1.1 is a great ROM. It's quite stable for a journaling off ROM also, haven't had any forced or random reboots since running it and going almost 2 weeks strong.

Flashing Bonsai now. Actually, reflashing because the first flash had immediate force closes. I did the journaling on zip with it.

@traumaj - Not worried about toe stepping

@forddna - as of last Monday, everything is running fine with Bonsai. Battery life seems same as every other ROM though, at least IMO. I'm a ROM-aholic though too. My biggest concern is that there is yet ANOTHER version of CWM and that it can be extremely confusing trying to keep track of them all.

Replied in PM, too, but in case anyone else can help:

After reflashing Bonsai, I'm getting the same force close messages for the Email application. It pops up every few minutes! I haven't even tried to go to my e-mail, so these are completely random force closes.

Edit..I just tried to check email to see what it would do. It opened the app, but no emails showed up. When I hit "show more messages" it force closed.

Email, not gmail, right?

Replace the email.apk in /system/app with a different version. Give me a bit (currently not home) to post up the one I was using.

Don't think I still have the one for the Epic, but the one HERE is the same one I used.

Can you please explain to me why I should be having to do this?? I'm loving this rom so far, especially with it automatically restoring all my data. I haven't had to tinker with very much at all since I flashed it.

If the email app is the problem, this would just be replacing it to see if the stock email app is the problem or not.

If bonsai doesn't pan out i would suggest trying emerald fury by computerkid23. I have used all 3 of his roms as dd's and haven't had any issues. Just look at his thread, overwhelmingly compliments and very little for issues. Stable and great battery life. :-)
