Notsure Rooted -> Unrooted -> Can't Re-root

Some time back I rooted my Epic 4G so I could get Froyo (first) then Gingerbread (now at 2.3.4 / EH06). At some point I unrooted myself (although I don't remember how), thinking I needed to do that so my phone would get the final OTA of Gingerbread. My life got busy, and frankly I don't know if that ever happened, or maybe it did and that's how I got EH06, who knows. Point is I want to root again so I can have some ROM fun, but my single-click rooting is failing. I've tried multiple cords, multiple ports, multiple computers, etc. and most of the time I get "phone not connected" but when I finally get a session where my phone thinks it's connected, I fail with "Root was not obtained after 60 seconds. Make sure the phone is connected and that adb is working. If adb shell isn't root, reboot the phone and try the script again." All I can say is WTF, I'm so frustrated. I am a computer professional in completely other platforms, so I am no idiot on computers or in computing, but being a complete novice in this area I have no idea what to do. I've Googled myself silly, can't find an answer. Does anyone have the patience of a saint to explain me out of this one, or instruct me in the multi-click rooting that I did the first time (but for which I can't find the instructions any longer, or maybe that's not going to help me)? I'm at my wits end. At the very least, when I upgrade I want to be able to sell this phone in a solid state one way or another (rooted or not) and I don't feel like I'm there at all.

I do not know if it matters since you flashed a leaked version, but I believe you have to use GingerBreak in order to root a Gingerbread ROM...

If that doesn't work, you can always use ODIN to flash back to EC05, and use one of the "standard" one click root methods...
