Default Killed my Epic trying to install GB

Followed the instructions, phone was already rooted. downloaded the update, saved it to the sd card, changed the name to update. begins the process but immediatly fails with an error. Will post it in just a second. PC does not recognize usb when in download mode. uninstalled/ reinstalled drivers etc.

You can't use the official update to update your rooted phone. I was rooted with Froyo. I had to ODIN back to stock then manually upgrade to Gingerbread.

To ODIN back to stock, following procedure 1 in post 4 here:

[How to] Factory Restore (or Fix a Bricked Phone) - Android Forums at AndroidCentral.com

To manually upgrade from stock (non-rooted) Froyo, do this:

Those of us who installed Bonsai 4.1.3 can't go back through Odin. Can anyone address the upgrade path to Gingerbread for us?

As did I when I sold my Epic.

What's Odin telling you when you try it? Try putting the battery back in prior to hitting start.

I had a rooted Froyo and was able to use the official update just fine. However, if you have ClockworkMod Recovery installed, you have to flash back to the stock recovery, or the update fails.

Ah, I guess that was my problem, I had ClockworkMod Recovery when I tried to apply the update.
