Default Rooting Gingerbread 2.3.5

I updated to 2.3.5 as many have and can not figure out how to root it. I have tried almost everything I found including Gingerbreak but to no avail. That hangs up, the oneclick I found kicks back chmod errors and says operations are not permitted, and the .tar I found to use through Odin hung up on the Samsung screen during boot. I rooted jut fine previously and just reloaded stock via Odin so that I could update to 2.3.5. Anyone know if this is possible (as of time of posting) without going to a custom rom? I like the update, I just want to ditch the bloatware and run my wireless tethering app. Kinda tempted to go back to Froyo until I can find a successful way to root this thing, again.

I haven't tried it, but from what I read, the only method was Gingerbreak, since the RageInTheCage exploit was patched up in the update.

I would just read through the thread on XDA and see if there is something you missed... Or see if you can find a pre-rooted stock GB Rom to flash using ODIN...

Be patient. I'm sure any of the issues will be resolved in the next few weeks...

I rooted my Epic 4G last night using a few Youtube videos and some posts on XDA.

First, follow the instructions here:

Then follow the instructions here:

I used these 2 videos and the files in the posts to root my Epic 4G that was on Gingerbread 2.3.5 - EI22. Works great! Wireless tether is loaded and working, have superuser icon, etc, etc. took me about 15 minutes!

enjoy!

Default Never rooted my phone...

Okay, so my question is now that I have gone from a stock Froyo Epic 4G and now updated to Gingerbread 2.3.5 will it be tougher for me to finally attempt to root my phone?

Are there updated step by step instructions on how to root a GB phone that has never been rooted? I know there were issue's with Froyo using "Gingerbreak" if you hadn't rooted previously. I was not able to root mine because of that.

Now that GB finally came OTA I am ready to try my hand at rooting and hope to make it a painless process. There is a lot of information out there, somewhat scattered. Is there a step by step check list anywhere for noob wannabe rooters where we can follow to collect all the needed files and have them ready and also all programs needed to install on the computer including what's needed to "root", "flash roms" and just in case use to fix your phone should things go wrong.

My apologies for sounding so fragile but I've been waiting to root my phone but was hoping and waiting for GB to come out and I want to make sure I do it correctly and know that I have all the correct tools (computer programs) and apps ready to go and then begin using the most updated video's to follow or threads with step by step instructions.

Also, I know everyone has their preferences of what ROM's are the best but as a first timer I guess I'm looking for the most stable, flexible, better speeds and battery life setup.

Thanks in advance.

ODIN ODIN ODIN...

You can either flash back to a stock FROYO, and root. Or else you could try looking for a prerooted stock GB ROM...

Here is a great video, showing links to the all the files you will need in the description...

The only thing is in the video he mentions DI18, versus EC05 (which is what you will be reverting to).

Default Rooting GB with Heimdall

I need to root with Mac OS X Snow Leopard (no Windows PC). Can I use Heimdall instead of Odin, and follow the instructions in the two videos?

Everyone I've talked to said that Heimdall works fine. Basically just the Mac's version of Odin. I'll try to find a couple of the posts where users have talked about using it. Unfortunately for me I'm still on 10.4 and Heimdall doesn't work on anything less than 10.5 so I have to try and go the PC route.
