Make sure the computer has the correct drivers for the epic. I use blackberry cable as well, then put phone into download mod. Power on while holding 1. Should work as long as everything is up to date. Also make sure you have the latest version of Odin.

Confused

Make sure you download the 32-bit version of the drivers even if you are running a 64 based machine. i just rooted mine last night and everything worked great thanks to RESEARCH, READING and VIEWING many videos of exactly what is going on when you root. (thanks bunches to qbking77!! and ASC ).
the only problem i found was that the samsung 64 bit drivers didn't work. you'll know that the drivers work when you plug in your phone (when using odin) and the dialogue box flashes yellow and you have a com#

Just download these on the computer you connect your phone to. They don"t go on your phone. Once they are installed the computer should see your epic no problem.
