Default Screen sensitivity

I have an Epic phone. The screen is way too sensitive. Just trying to put the phone into my pocket opens applications. Is there a way to change the setting to be less sensitive? I'm an old guy, so I would appreciate step by step directions if anyone can help.
Thanks

If I say "enable the lock pattern" does that mean anything to you?

If not and you want to give it a shot, just reply and let me know.
