What does the ddms do? I see it is the Dalvik Debug Monitor, but what does it do? I have my phone plugged in and it is just zooming along. I am not touching any buttons on the phone, and it appears the phone is asleep.

It can show you warnings, errors, etc. For instance, I used it to see what errors my old phone was getting when it got the silent bug. I've also used it when attempting to troubleshoot problems with Facebook for HTC Sense sync.
