Universal 1 Click Eris App Apk - No PCs, No Scripts Needed, EASY
Preface, This is not a free app, its a try before you buy app. If this app works for you, and you are happy with it. You are required to donate a meal to a homeless youth, or any amount of money to a youth outreach type program.
This is a TeamAndIRC production. The source code is available on request, if good reason exists.
I got bored and whipped this up tonight with ECLIPS3. This will root your Droid Eris running 2.1 with 1 click.
This does NOT erase anything off your phone. You can keep you data/apps with this root!
If something doesn't work, don't freak just contact me. Tested working on latest RUU.
Linking to pirated/illegal software: It's a shame I actually have to touch on this. Don't do it. It will be removed and repeat offenses will result in a ban.
If I knew anything about dalvik apps and JINI, I would have done something similar.
Even though my "root for dummies" doesn't use the SDK or a PC, I was still a little chagrined about how clunky it seemed to be. One click is a definite improvement!
I am concerned about one thing (as much for my hack as for this) - each "lowering of the bar to entry" admits a fresh crop of users with successively weaker computing skills.
That's not meant as a slam of anybody, but it does mean that the risk of a user creating a brick is somewhat elevated until we can get all rooters onto the 1.49.2000 (S-OFF) bootloader. At least that creates a safe "backstop" against recovery partition disasters.
I think the next thing to do would be to get a "one click 1.49.2000" hack put together (or an update.zip equivalent) - something that can also be used to get the engineering bootloader onto their phones, without using fastboot/adb/SDK.
You forced my hand. S=off bootloader 1 click, well maybe 2 click later this week.
4x4lem,
Yes, and infact on most devices I normally recommend clockwork. However I am not sure if past issues with the eris were ever worked out, so I went with amon's.

No promises, but I'll see what I can do.

When I get my eris I will try it for you if it isn't already tested by then. I haven't even won the auction for it yet though. The reason I'm getting another eris is because I'm not allowed to have a camera phone at work and I lothe the black berry I'm switching back and fourth with my incredible. I'm thinking of physically damaging the camera so it won't work, but a better idea would be soft disabling it. Would any of you cooks be able to take a rom and disable the camera, that way if I were to ever want to sell the phone I could load a different rom and have a functioning camera? The idea came to me when they were having issues getting the cameras to work on the incredible with certain roms, but I still don't want to take the chance of breaking my screen at work.
Not trying to thread jack, it just seems as if there is some talent in this thread.
I really hate to ask a stupid question, but, How do you "Flash" a file?
You "flash" (overwrite flash memory) a file via an option in the installed custom recovery partition (usually Amon_RA's or ClockworkMod). There's an option, "Flash zip from sdcard" in the recovery menu.
Usually you flash a custom ROM .zip file or an update file that contains, well updates, to your existing ROM.
There are other ways to flash, but this is the typical / usual method.

Now that I have root following the 1 click method, where do I go from here? I have been reading up on rooting, but not with this method. Do I need to install a custom rom? What am I able to do with the setup the way it is?

I'm not sure what is included in the rootme.zip file but I imagine it only gave you superuser access to the phone which will allow to install and use root only apps. If you want to flash a new ROM you will have to find one that you like and download it to the root of your sdcard. Once it's on your sdcard you can flash it via recovery.

Do I need to do anything before I download and flash it? Like partition my sd card? Will this wipe my phone?
Is there a thread that covers this? I have searched but am unable to find one.
wyzird,
This app does an in-place root of your phone. I.e., if you follow all of the steps, it will install Amon_RA's custom recovery and then allow and instruct you to flash the rootme.zip file via the custom recovery. Voila', you are now rooted.
Rooting using this method allows you to keep all of your settings, apps, etc, but give you root capabilities (i.e., options):
- you could download and install wi-fi tethering
- you could overclock your phone (a little more involved); i.e., make it faster
- you could download and install root-only apps like drocap2, Root Explorer, etc.
The world is your oyster (I wish I could have rooted this way).
You can, at your discretion and separate from this app, select/download a custom rooted ROM and flash it via custom recovery (although you don't have to and many folks would find this rooting method very inviting since they don't have to lose any of their current setups).
You should be aware that there are other things you need to know and do while / when rooted the most important being taking a Nandroid backup (done via custom recovery) before making any major / scary changes to your phone.
Read around the threads, especially the stickied ones at the top of the all-things-root-eris forum to get a better feel for some of these topics.
Hope this helps.

Okay, I'll admit it. I was very uneasy about rooting my Eris. I'm about mid-level when it comes to tech knowledge, but the biggest scare factor for me in this situation was the chance that I'd wind up screwing something up and bricking my only lifeline to friends, family and wacky fun time apps. But after reading up on the current advancements in Rooting For Dummies and coming across this "one step method", I pulled the trigger... with splendid results! It was easy, it was quick, and went off without a hitch. Getting ready for the next phase (root app exploration) and looking forward to maximizing the capabilities of this little smartphone.
So if you, dear reader, are still on the fence like I was, fear not. Embrace the root. It's a whole 'nother world in here.
Special thanx to the guru guys and gals who pioneered this procedure and who continue to tinker around with the tech. Your efforts are most appreciated!
If I don't want to install a custom ROM am I done after step 3? What is accomplished with flashing the rootme.zip file? If I simply reboot I'll still be rooted and be able to use that wifi-tether app right? (that's the main reason I'm doing it) So could anyone please tell me, then point me in the right direction to the best way to tether for rooted users and perhaps some recommendations of ROMS should I ever want to install one?

clicking the button sets the exploit up, its launched on the first reboot, after than you have a custom recovery. After than either install rootme.zip for simple root, or flash a custom rom.
I did this method to root my phone today. I like my current set and don't want to wipe my phone or lose any data. How can I go about installing the engineering boot loader without wiping my data? Or is there no way around it, data gets wiped?

I have a way around it, but haven't had time to clean it up more. Just wait.
Just rooted my phone with this method through the Market (THANK YOU DEVS! YOU GUYS FREAKING ROCK!). So, now what? I still notice significant lag on my phone. I haven't flashed a custom ROM, because I'm not really sure what it is I'm wanting. I'd love to get rid of the stupid bloatware that came with my phone because they are constantly running. I don't use Sense anymore since switching to Launcher Pro (which I love) but it continues to run in the background. If I just want to access basic stuff, what do I need to download or do? I would eventually like to OC, but not sure what I need.
If I go to a custom ROM, I understand the flashing process, but do I need to do a factory reset prior to flashing? What is this wiping nonsense? I feel kind of lost perusing these threads sometimes...they get way to technical.
Thanks for any help!!! And thanks again jcase and Eclips3 for all of your hard work! Where do I send the money???

So ..after I have backedup everything with the recovery, can I go back into my phone regularly and then download a custom ROM and then go back into recovery to flash the Custom ROM that I downloaded?
