Default New Here-May want to Root?

Hello everyone, have been reading the forums and finally have decided to post. I am a Verizon customer and recently received a Droid Eris, and it appears to have downloaded ALL updates, including the latest "2.1"....?

Now the reason I got an Eris was because it was the smallest phone I could find with touch screen that feels good in my hands. What I am basically looking to do, is have this phone as simple as possible. I text, obviously make and receive calls, and on occasion, get on the internet and the android market with wireless and 3g. However, I don't want all the other features. I would to keep email (I may use it later) I guess I just want a phone that still allows me to use wireless, 3G, talk and text, and allow me to change my wallpaper when I want. I am not sure if I can, or am able to do this. I understand what rooting does, but I guess I would need a rom as well? I guess the first questions is if I can do what I want on this phone?

Thanks Everyone.

tmay70, welcome to AndroidForums!

Well, you didn't say if you were unhappy with your phone and thought that rooting would help...(i.e., to make it a little snappier (more responsive), or allow you to run root-only apps (like wi-fi tethering, etc.)).

If you are pretty happy with your Eris as it is (and there is nothing wrong with that) and it appears that your current stock ROM gives you all of the functionality that you've listed.

If you really do want and need to root, you can root your phone (in-place) without having to install a custom ROM over top of it (you'll still be able to install a custom ROM at a later date too if you so choose). Doing an in-place root allows you to keep all of your current phone's setup/goodness without having to re-install a thing.

Anyway, let us know more about what you are looking for. You might alway want to cruise over to this subforum: Eris - All Things Root - Android Forums and look at the first stickied thread (http://androidforums.com/eris-all-things-root/163116-eris-rooting-methods-related-links.html). In there, you'll find the first three links:

- Universal 1 Click Eris App Apk - No PCs, No Scripts Needed, EASY

- Universal Eris Root for Dummies!

- DETAILED Leak Root Tutorial

These threads have a lot of good information in them. Read through and see if this gives you a better idea as to what you want to do.

Cheers!

My mom and I got matching erises a few months ago...

Even without loading a rom and doing barebones things like a basic overclock profile and spare parts default memory management, you wouldn't even believe the difference. Her phone gets terrible battery life (non oc'd) and is nigh unuseable.

If you're needing an easy way to root your Eris without going to more than 1 article, check out Run Android 2.2 (Froyo) on Your Droid Eris (How-To) | JonSuh.com. I summed it all up for you; should be a piece of cake! Good luck
