Default AFV File Verifier for Android™

All,

I'm posting this first here, in the Eris root forum since this forum was my first "home" and I'm hoping this will prove useful to you (especially to those of you that frequently flash new ROMs).

I have updated and revamped my old MD5 Checksum app and renamed it to
AFV File Verifier for Android™
.

The app is now available (free) in the Market (search for "AFV"). Click 'Show' below for the QR code:

I've created a website containing more of the app details: https://sites.google.com/site/scaryalienware

In addition to the original MD5/SHA1 checksum functions, I've added two new functions that you might find helpful:

- Validation of signed jar-type files (.apk, .jar, .zip). This function is useful for verifying the completeness and validity of files such as custom ROMs, app install (.apk) files, flashable installable (.zip) files, etc. It works by verifying the SHA1 digests (checksums) of each file listed in the signed jar file's META-INF/MANIFEST.MF file.

- Nandroid backup directory verification. This function will verify the MD5 checksums of the files listed in the Nandroid backup's nandroid.md5 file against each file in the backup. Additionally, I've included some Nandroid backup directory name audits to help point-out any naming issues that might cause you to receive errors when you attempt to later restore the Nandroid backup. These audits include comparing the serial number of your phone to the Nandroid backup pathname. Also, if you rename your Nandroid backup directories, the app will point-out characters in your filename that could cause problems (spaces, ampersands, asterisks, etc.) should you attempt to restore such a backup.

I would like to take this opportunity to specially mention and express my gratitude to erisuser1 who provided me with invaluable feedback and suggestions regarding ways to improve this app. His leadership and contributions to the Android community were what inspired me to create this app in the first place. Thank you, eu1!

Please, check out the app and let me know if you have any problems, questions, or comments.

Very impressive Scary (with a tip of the hat to EU1)

Edit: Hey, there is no 'X' behind the scary alien head in the market. I'm going to tell your daughter that you've been messing with her copyright.
(I THINK it was your daughter that did that for you...)

Lol! Funny that you noticed that! I actually had her make me an X-less icon for this newly revamped version of the app...she gets all the credit for its graphical elements. I also would be remiss not to mention doogald's valuable feedback on the earlier versions of this app. I've still got a few minor things to fix and enhance as well as to try to implement some remaining suggestions by eu1, but I thought putting out on the Market was the right idea at this time.

Thank you for the kind words and encouragement.

Scary,

Please check these two items:

1. results do not appear to be copied to clipboard.
2. switching to landscape view wipes out the results.

Thanks,

SF

I certainly will...you are talking about the calculate MD5 or SHA1 checksums regarding the clipboard, right? (these are the only result values I should be copying there).

I'm a little surprised about the clipboard issue, but I made so many changes in the UI from the original version to the version you have its certainly possible.

The portrait to landscape thing is a little more tricky...I'm not sure that the program actually gets notified that a mode switch happens to allow me to detect and redisplay... I'll play with that and get back to you.

Thank you for the valuable feedback--I do very much appreciate it!

Cheers!

edit: yep, I see where I had moved the calculate checksum function to a class that gets threaded in the background and got separated from the clipboard copy; I'll fix this soon (maybe tonight) and republish; also, the orientation change appears to behave like what happens when the back-key is pressed...not sure I'll be able to fix this one...

The landscape issue came up when I put the phone down to go back to my netbook. Maybe you can turn landscape off while your app is running (landscape is not needed anyway). I do appreciate the larger yellow font!

I'm not sure I know how to do that, lol, but I will certainly look at that (this was my first serious attempt at building an Android app--there's a bazillion new concepts I had to learn and work through (I blame erisuser1 for most of them since he suggested a ton of excellent ideas )).

Thanks...I'll look at things tonight (but I've still got to write-up my documentation for the custom recovery changes--when it rains, it pours, ya know ).

Thanks again!

Default version 1.1 updated in the Market

I've updated the app to include fixes for two minor issues kindly reported by starflorida:

1) The automatic copying of the calculated checksum to the clipboard has been re-instituted (when I threaded the calculate-checksum function to the background in order to display a progress bar, I had separated the population of the clipboard from the result returned by the thread; this has been corrected).

2) The orientation of the main screen has now been locked to portrait mode to ensure that checksum information is properly displayed on all phones when returning from a calculation.

Thanks to all for your support and feedback--it is much appreciated. Cheers!

One last thing, SA - is there any way when you select file to sort the results ignoring case? It seems to show capital letter files and directories first, and then the lower case, so you get things like:

Quick
The
brown
fox

instead of:

brown
fox
Quick
The

If it's too much work, then don't bother....

Yeah, I think I could...how about I make it an option in the menu (the setting will be saved from launch-to-launch of the app)?

By the way, it was eu1's idea to sort and put the directory up-top/first, which I think is a good idea.

I will certainly put this on the list of things to do. I'm also going to add an option (probably in the menu) to set (input/paste) a checksum for comparison with a calculated checksum result (so that you don't have to manually / visually do a byte-for-byte compare).

I appreciate, as always, your feedback and support--thanks again!

Having directories first is fine, but I'm really more concerned that my "dropbox" and "downloads" directories are nowhere near my "DCIM" directory.

No worries, I'll hook you up with a menu option (I'll try to make a "directory on top" option and a "sort w/o regard to case" option to cover both ways).

So just out of idle curiousity, how are you going to do that. Keep in mind that I'm a programmer, but not in the language you're using. So I know stuff, just not that stuff.
I'm assuming that the sort is really based on the ascii character rather than the alpha character we see. What are you going to do make 'D' sort next to 'd'?
My world is not case sensitive, so it's not an issue for me - thus the question.

I already have the filename, type (directory or file), and filename suffix in three separate arrays. I'll just create a new array with a downshifted version of the filename to use that to sort on when the option is in effect, and then display the original filename instead of the downshifted one.

At least, that's my plan...

Yep, that's basically what I would have done, except that in my world it's easier to change to all caps (for display purposes, so the users see 'pretty' text) so I would have gone 'up' rather than 'down', but the end result would have been the same.

Lol! I still find myself mixing programming conventions between all of the languages I've learned over the years (the major ones being BASIC (old-school, of course), COBOL (various incarnations), C (not C++), Tandem TAL (very Pascal-like), Scheme (a Lisp variant), and now, learning Java).

I've also dabbled in Prolog, FORTRAN, Icon, and a myriad of other ones that I can't claim a high-level of proficiency in.

Java for Android has been pretty easy to pick up since there's so many examples and helpful sites out on the web (kudos to everyone who has shared ).

Default v1.2 just uploaded to the Market

All,

Been awhile since I've updated this app and it was long overdue. Mostly minor fixes and updates. No real core functions changed other than upgrade the early (noobie-coded ) menu settings to the more professional and standard preferences and settings menu.

I've also made some changes that should eliminate any FCs you were getting (most related to orientation changes, I believe). I'll get the orientation handling properly done in a future version.

If you get any FCs, please email me at scary.alien@gmail.com and let me know the circumstances so I can make a fix (the crash reports don't often tell the whole story).

Here's the change log for v1.2:

version 1.2 - 23-Jan-2011:

- supported standard preferences / settings menu instead of individual menu items

- added SD card mounted check before allowing file selection

- added two methods for comparing MD5 or SHA1 checksums:

* auto-comparison of calculated checksums w/menu option to display comparison results

* manual input of checksum (or paste from clipboard) value to be compared w/next calculated checksum

- changed default sort order of file / directory names to ignore case

- added option to toggle ignoring of case when sorting file / directory names

- force all screens to portrait orientation to fix/prevent FCs (future version will handle orientation changes correctly)

Thanks again for using my app and for your support. As always, email me or post-up here for any comments, questions, issues, or suggestions.

Cheers!

P.S. doogald, I finally got your "ignore case" directory sort done (sorry it took so long )

Very nice & professional looking, sa.

You're making it look as if it's easy to write Android apps - but I'm pretty sure you've put a lot of effort into this. Who says old dogs can't learn new tricks? - not me!

Thank you very much! That means a lot to me coming from you.

Yeah, its been a lot of work, but learning while doing has been very rewarding. Since this was my first "real" app, "if I only knew then, what I know now...", lol.

Cheers and thank you again!

It was a very minor issue for me. Very minor. It definitely was not a "I need this now" feature - just a suggestion to make it better.

But, thanks. I'll check the market for an update.

No worries ... I actually coded for it a long while back (I got distracted with BattMonX)...so long, in fact, that I wasn't sure that I had actually finished it or did it correctly (so, I had a little re-testing to do this weekend re. this (I actually used your "quick brown fox..." list of filenames ), plus you can revert back to the old, original sort method too if so inclined.

Thank you for suggesting this change.

Default v1.3 just published to the Market

An ice-storm and Ground Hog's day present for everyone: v1.3!

Nothing major--just some more things on the to-do list that I finally figured-out how to do.

version 1.3 - 2-Feb-2011:

- now supports SHA-224, SHA-256, SHA-384, and SHA-512 digest/checksum algorithms (along with the MD5 and SHA1 algorithms, these appear to be all functions that the MessageDigest API supports)

- will now also display checksum results in a pop-up to ensure viewing checksum results on all phones

- keep screen on while progress-bar is displayed in long-running calculations (suggested long-ago by eu1!)

- directory name is now remembered from last file selection (about time, lol)

- added help menu function for file selection screen

Thanks and hope these changes are useful.

Cheers!

doogald,

This is pretty cool! (How did I miss the new web-based Market update? lol, been in the middle of the ice-storm as I'm sure a lot of folks have been too... I've been hunkered-down working from home and making tweaks to this app whilst the world froze-up all around us. Hope all are safe too).

Thanks again for the reply and the heads-up!

Cheers!

edit: the new web-market is just a smidge behind though...I'm sure it'll take a few hours before the new version information shows-up there (its already in the Market on your phone though); I've noticed that the download and install stats are only usually updated every 24 to 36 hours or so (sometimes more, sometimes less).

Scary, I hadn't looked at this for a while - very attractive UI!
And like you, I apparently missed the memo on the new (?) online market. Thanks to Doogald for pointing that out.

Thank you!

Yeah, I was pretty busy yesterday with everything going on that I didn't get a chance to scour the various Android sites for news like I usually do. Looks like they've got my 1.3 version showing now...looks like Google is finally starting to make some much-needed changes with hopefully more goodies to come.

Cheers!

Yes, yesterday was a big Android day, with the official announcement and demo of Honeycomb for Android tablets. The new web-based market for Android was part of that.

I've always liked appbrain, but this will be good, too.

I tried using it in install-from-web mode, but got tired of waiting for it to happen, and eventually fired up the market app. Do you know- is it supposed to operate in a "push" fashion, or does it just wait for the phone to eventually do a check-in? (My result might have differed because I had a prior version already on the phone, dunno)

I did a push install myself last evening (of an app I care little about, and will likely uninstall after it arrives) and I am still waiting. I may go into the Market on the phone manually and see if it arrives then. Or perhaps they are not ready for push installs?

I also wonder if they have a new version of the market that you need on the phone for this to work?

Ok, I just went into the market and it started updating apps that were set to auto-update (CPUBoost Lite and Google Maps), but, interestingly, the Market remained at a white screen for a long time before it finally started appearing. But, still no update of that app I tried to push last night.

I may try again and see what happens.

Default v1.4 of AFV (Android File Verifier) just uploaded

All,

I just uploaded my newest version of AFV to the Android Market.

Been working on this one for a while (sorry it took so long ).

Thanks again to eu1 for suggesting the "launch / send" from other apps idea .

Hope you enjoy it!

Here's the change log:

version 1.4 - 7-Apr-2011:

- display elapsed time for long-running operations

- allow app to be invoked from other applications (tested with Astro File Manager, Estrongs File Explorer, OI File Manager); use the "Send" function

- added donate button (donate version of app will be published soon)

- added 'md5sum -c Type Check' function for .md5 files (equivalent to 'Verify Nandroid Backup') to make it clear that functionality exists for non-Nandroid .md5 files too

Yeah, since I didn't get to go to Google I/O, I stayed home and watched all of the session on-line. Lots of new stuff to learn (Honeycomb, etc.)--heck, I wasn't even done learning the old stuff!

Thanks...got some ideas for future improvements to AFV too that are in the hopper:

1. Proper orientation handling (right now the screens are locked to portrait since it takes logic to get notified and handle an orientation change (and re-populate the screen items))

2. Tablet support (just got a Xoom yesterday (since I couldn't go to SF for Google I/O, I figured I'd "invest" in a new development platform -- that's the "official" story in case my wife asks )).

3. Generate an .md5 file from selected files; this is in preparation for a future thing I've got planned to allow you to build a catalog/database of files you've already scanned, allowing for file comparisons, etc.

4. Tasker support

And more!

Cheers!

Default Question about using AFV...

Hello,

I have been using AFV for a short time and it works well, but I am not sure that I am using it correctly. When I use t to get the checksum from a file that I have downloaded, I cannot figure out how to easily check this with the number that is reported it should be. I usually go to the download site on my computer and match the number from the computer screen to my phone.

Is this how everyone does it? Is there an easier way to do this checking?

Thanks
Steve

Hey Steve!

Sounds like you're doing it right -- just visually compare the checksum value that you see calculated vs. the value that's published. I know that's not perfect, given the number of digits / character to compare.

If you are surfing a website on your phone and can copy the checksum of the file from the web page into your phone's clipboard, you can use the menu -> Preferences / Settings -> Input Checksum function (as well as having the Display Comparison Info checkbox enabled) to store a checksum. Then, the next checksum that you compute using the app will automatically be compared to the one you just pasted and the results displayed for you.

Additionally, if the file that you are checking is a signed, .zip file like a signed ROM or app's .apk file, etc., you can do a Verify Jar-type File function on it and the app will check the integrity of the file without you even needing to know the file's checksum (because the checksum / digests are stored within a signed file (in the META-INF directory structure).

Let me know if you have other questions!

Cheers!

That totally rocks! I just tried it on a zip file that I downloaded (yes a custom ROM) and it said 0 files failed verification.

Thanks for the help for a noob!
