May I have you opinions
so tomorrow I'm getting myself a TB(no that's not the point of this thread) however, my Eris willl not be thrown away but rather given to my lady friend to replace her extremely laggy BB curve 8300. Anywho, I have some questions about transferring my phone to her, first off, when she activates it she'll lose root access right? cause they have to do a factory rest, ? Also, if they do it's no big deal because I've rooted this thing and rerooted it several times with replacements etc, but I was wondering what ROM I should give her. Currently I'm running GSB 1.7, and it's super snappy and quick. But for someone just getting into android do you think I should give them a sense based ROM like tenzo's or xtrSense? cause sense is more polished and more user friendly.. orrr stick to pure android on gingerbread? inputs please !@

nope. i personally would not even involve a verizon store or employee. all you need to is wipe data/factory reset in recovery to get your personal data off,or chose the factory data reset option under menu/privacy. doing so will not break your root. whatevers on your sd card will still be there,so you might consider reformatting it to wipe it clean,or simply keep it and let her get a new one. you can activate the rooted phone online or calling *228. i gave my friend a rooted eris, and it was no big deal.

how good a friend is she? if shes someone you want to hand the phone over to and not hear her from because theres a prollem, then id stick with one of the tried and true stock based roms.
if you are close to her,and dont mind troubleshooting if she has a prollem, and will be available to change roms or teach her the rom changing ropes, then id consider leaving GSB on it. tho i might update it to the current version. let her try a new one every few days and then she can choose for herself wich one to stay with

yes we're closee so troubleshooting won't be a problem, however this woman's basically my wife haha and all females are impatient.. haha. But I will consider! but if i activate for her myself what about contacts?? they gotta be transferred ya know
yup! since shes coming from a BB,you will need to create a google account if she doesnt have one. then you can export her backup assistant contacts from verizon to it. when i got my first droid,i came from an env touch and thats what i had to do to get all my contacs over. i think there is still a "how to" on verizons website.
then when you do the factory data reset, the "touch the android" screen will come up when the phone boots. it should then let her activate the phone, and and sign into her google account and all her contacts and calander will resync with the phone.
I recently transferred my rooted eris to a another account. Had a slight issue with *228 in the store (the dialer disappeared) but we got it to work. You can always nandroid back up, flash stock and restore back.
The sense based roms most people believe are the simplest to use and picked up quickly. Sense is very user friendly and polished. Any of the stock sense roms will do work (i.e XtrSense 2.1 is solid).
One additional thought: While sense is standard and popular now, in the future the sense platform may fade, but vanilla android roms will always be around. I would think if you plan on using android phones for a long time, a Cyanogen based rom/ Vanilla rom may help avoid learning new roms in the future. (realistically, the difference is slight, but we have all heard the "i wish my new phone worked like my old one.")
I myself am running GSB 2.0 right now. Works great. I cant say the phone is any faster than KaosFroyo v37 2.2. I personally found XtrRom 2.1 the fastest and smoothest). I went to gingergread for two reasons: 1) integrated sip droid calling (free voip calling to any number) 2) I wanted to 1 up my fellow android friends. "My eris has gingerbread, your new phone doesn't."
lastly, you may want to look for a girly themed rom, Pink, purple etc. Bonus points are always good!
On the dialer issue, you can press the menu soft key to get the keyboard. Then just push the ?123 button for numbers. There was also a thread about this issue that listed a couple other ways to dial *228.

Stupid question but you do have a data package right? Another thing to check is: Settings>Wireless & Network Settings>Mobile Netyworks>Data Enabled checked.

Yes of course. And that is checked. I unchecked and rechecked a couple times and rebooted it to see if works. No dice. Maybe i should wipe and try again?

That's an option or you could wait for Doogald or Scary Alien to chime in.
So I flashed GSB for her and activated her phone. Everything work except the mobile network won't come on. Any ideas why it wouldnt???
Hmmm, I think that I've seen that reported on xda-developers.
Do you have a Nandroid of a close-to-stock ROM, like xtrSENSE or xtrROM? If you do, I'd try to restore that, and, if not, I'd try to install one of those and see if mobile networking works there (perhaps go through the activation again.) If so, try then reinstalling GSB and see if it now works. (I'd keep a Nandroid of xtrSENSE or xtrROM on there, as some people report a loss of text messaging on the CyanogenMod ROMs and almost always running the phone with a close-to-stock ROM will solve that problem; just Nandroiding back to GSB you find that messaging continues to work fine.)

I believe I have a nand backup of Tenzo's 2.1 ROM. But, it's not my phone anymore so would all of my old stuff come back? I think later on today I'm just gonna give her the newest version of xtrSense. I hear good things and also hopefully that'll get the mobile network on. I'm sure she'll like the polished sense ui over stock gingerbread. Will give it a go later on and let you know if the problem was fixed! thanks

I've flashed several different rom's including yours and have not had that problem so let know how that goes and good luck.

So I just flashed xtrSense on it and still... no network. I've never experienced this and I've flashed and reflashed many ROMs while I had the eris. could it have to do with her account? I mean she does have a data plan though.. now I'm getting mad! haha

Call Verizon tech support and see if there is something mis-configured on the account. Sometimes they reset something on the account and that fixes things. Keep xtrSENSE on there until you know that it works.

Just out of curiosity, did you try unrooting using the Flashback21 ROM with the radio? I wonder if replacing the radio would fix the problem?
