Default moving from froshedyo v11 to GSB v2.1 anything i need to know

first off im not exactly sure if its just GSB v2.1 but the link is here [ROM][3/15/2011] GSB v2.1 | GingerBread 2.3.3 [CM7.0.0 RC2 NIGHTLY] - xda-developers anyway. is there anything i should know before switching? anything really different i should expect? i see that i need to flash gapps before rebooting but that shouldnt be a problem i assume its just like flashing a rom. im excited to try it out. thank you

There's not much difference, except that (IMHO) GSB is better.

How are you trying to install it?

First, make sure that you have a complete download. The best way is to get Scary Alien's AFV app; long-press on the gapps .zip file and ask it to do a Verify JAR type file from the menu. If it passes that, it's all set.

Second, I can't see how you would install this from a PC. The google apps .zip file is flashed from Recovery, just like the GSB .zip file is. So, install instructions are:

- download GSB and gapps and put the .zip files in the root directory of your SD card
- Nandroid backup
- wipe data/factory reset
- wipe Dalvik cache (ignore any instructions to do this more than once, by the way)
- flash GSB
- flash gapps
- restart the phone

It ended up working shortly after posting that but what I meant was I was tryg download gapps then file transfer it to my phone. Sorry for the mix up I guess it was a little too late for me.anyway I'm amazed with how quick gsb is so far. I had setcpu on froshedyo. Do I need it on this? I'm sorry for always asking so many questions.I'm sure I'm getting annoying. But thank you for all Youd help

Nobody asking questions is annoying - the only dumb question is one that you do not ask. I did misunderstand your earlier question, though; it seemed to me that you were trying to install the google apps by unzipping them first and then trying to install after starting the phone or something.

I don't think that you need SetCPU - the only reason you may is if you want to set up some advanced profiles, such as lowering clock speeds when the battery drains to a certain percentage. You can control the overclocking with settings->CyanogenMod settings->Performance->CPU Settings. My advice is to try making any changes that you want there, and if you don't get good enough battery life or performance, then you can always reinstall SetCPU.

JIT - just in time compiling - for apps that are written properly, they will run faster with JIT enabled.

lock home in memory: will try to prevent Android's memory manager from closing the default home program (or the default launcher, whatever you want to call it) when an app running in the foreground, and services in the background, need more memory. If the home app is closed in the background, it's ok, but it just has a few seconds lag when you go back home and the app needs to reload all of the home screen icons and widgets.

VM heap size = the amount of RAM set aside for apps to create data in RAM. VM = virtual machine; the virtual machine in Android is called Dalvik, a name I believe you have seen before.

bobcat, how is your battery life with that setup? and i read somewhere that if you are using smartass, it automatically caps your max at 245 when the screen is off, taking the place of making a screen off profile on setcpu, is this true? anyway im going to try bobcats settings but im going to keep my max at 640 for now. will the rest of your setup work with that?

I think smartass changes the screen off max to 480.

Battery life is good however I've been battleing battery overheating that I don't think anybody's been able to pinpoint the problem. I think maybe it's the silicone cover I have on it. How have those settings worked for you.

GMail has a way to collect email from other accounts using POP, with the added bonus that when you reply to them, it can use that other email address.

GMail has a help page that explains it all here: Get mail from other accounts - Gmail Help

But you may be able to figure it out for yourself anyway. Go into Mail Settings (in gmail in a PC browser), "Account and Import" page, "Check mail using POP" section.

That said, I know that my daughter's university is using Google apps for their email, so you can actually just add an account to the Android gmail app if your school is also using Google Apps for Domains. Inside the gmail app, menu->accounts.

its literally amazing how much doogald has helped me with everything! i will try both of those suggestions. also my battery life is pretty good assuming i am not browsing the internet all day but thats to be expected no matter what. im still pretty amazed at how good gsb is i just wish i could find a way to put flash or flash lite on it. can you? i downloaded skyfire but it still didnt work on any flash videos i just get that little cube icon thing where the video should be. any suggestions for this? i know you cant put flash 10.1 on eris because it only supports lite but i have read that that only works on sense. is there anything that will work on gsb?

I'll tell you what - send me a Private Message here with any details that you have about your email account (with the exception of the password) and I'll see if I can walk you through setting it up. I'll be in and out the rest of the days, but hopefully I can help you set it up.

One thing that you can try, though, is to install Thunderbird on your computer and go through the mail setup on the account there. Thunderbird can be very good about automatically configuring access to accounts, and you can then take advantage of those settings to set up gmail at the same time.

(Although, that said, if you already have email set up on a PC now that gets this email, you can also use those settings.)

(All this said, I have no idea how your school is set up; it could be that you have some sort of private VPN connection required to get your mail, and no public POP server access, but, still, it may be worth a shot.)
