This is by design with xtrROM (and xtrSENSE.)
Stock Eris 2.1 introduced this weird problem that if you checked your battery usage it would mistakenly report that time without a signal was 50% of the time (even though it wasn't). This can be fixed by quickly putting the phone in airplane mode, waiting a brief period (I used to wait for the display to turn off) and then turning off airplane mode.
With xtrROM 5.0.1 (and xtrSENSE5), zach.xtr added a script that puts the phone in airplane mode when it is booted, and then turns off airplane mode. It does this automatically, and its purpose is to fix the 50% without signal bug.

First off, it is normal for gscript to start that way - with a blank screen. You need to press menu and choose the option to add a script. If you are not seeing any scripts to add, something is up, because flashing the ROM adds a folder called gscript with a bunch of scripts to the SD card.
Perhaps there is an issue with the PRL (preferred roaming list) on the phone? Do you have no signal everywhere, or just at home? If you can find a signal somewhere, you may want to drive to that spot and do a reactivation (dial *228 and press 1 when prompted) and update the PRL (dial *228 and press 2 when prompted.)
