Question Getting rid of Sense

Hey guys, I'm sure there's a billion threads for this already, but I have a couple questions. I think I'm about to root my phone because I hate sense. Will this make my phone operate like a non HTC android phone? Also, do I have to root, or is there a safe easy way of doing this otherwise. I'm not too techy anymore, so the less complication the better. Thanks.

you could to a large extent "get rid of sense" simply by useing a different launcher. ive used launcher pro and adw and like them both. you dont need to be rooted for this.

the other(and more fun ) option would be to root your phone and install a rom based on AOSP code. there are 2.1,2.2,and 2.3 roms based on cyanogenmod developed roms, wich are based on AOSP. cyanogenmod roms are my favorite. ive rooted every phone ive had and run cm ROM on it. im with ya for sure in youre hatred of sense

my recomendation would be 2.3 based "gingershedbred". it seems to be very fast, smooth and stable. it will honestly feel like a totoally different phone.

there is a one click app for rooting the eris. its really quick and easy. however,i would storngly reccomend reading thru the "rooting for dummies" thread prior to using it,as it describes procedures for making backups and installing roms after youre rooted.

do some reading, and post up any questions you may have. were here to help

Hey, somebody else from Northern MA.

The answer is yes, you can root the phone to make it work like a non-HTC phone. Yes, you need to be rooted to get rod of all of the HTC Sense bits; even if you try another launcher, the HTC customized versions of the dialer, contacts/people, browser and email apps will remain (and that email client is particularly bad.)

Rooting these days is not particularly hard and non particularly unsafe and fairly easily reversible (i.e., you can go back to stock pretty easily.) You can do it without being particularly techy.

Cool. Then the main thing I'd need to do is root (which doesn't look too bad with the for dummies thread). Now, how would I go about getting rid of Sense after that? I want to flat out delete it, not just shut it off. I feel like it makes my phone drag far too much. It takes forever to make a phone call. Also, would I have to install a seperate UI to run plain old Android once I delete Sense, or is it already running in the background? Thanks a ton guys. I'm getting to despise this phone thanks to these issues.

Once you are rooted, you will flash a custom ROM which can have a different UI. There are a few Sense based ROMs, but most of the Froyo 2.2 ROMs do not use Sense, and none of the Gingerbread 2.3 ROMs use Sense. These ROMs use either ADW Launcher or LauncherPro.

Check out Android Forums & Windows Phone Discussion @ xda-developers, find the Eris Development section, and look for posts marked [ROM] to see what is available. There are also many threads on this forum that will talk about different ROMs, what people like and dislike about them, and some have links as well.

If you don't want Sense, I think that you have two or three good choices:

1. xtrROM
2. Tainted Tenzo
3. GSB
(4. GingerTazz is probably also good, but I have not run it.)

xtrROM and TaintedTenzo are both Android 2.1 based ROMs and largely based on the stock Eris software, though both have varying bits of vanilla Android. TT uses more "vanilla" than xtrROM, but both are very good ROMs. None of them have the Sense launcher.

All of them have some sort of Launcher. xtrROM and Tainted come with the stock Android launcher, which has only three home screens and you will probably want to install from the market an alternate home, such as Launcher Pro, Zeam, Go Launcher, ADW or ADW EX. All are good. GSB has LauncherPro pre-installed; I'm not sure what GingerTazz has.

GSB (and GT) are CyanogenMod Android 2.3 based ROMs, which are very close to stock open source Android. These require one extra step if you try them, though, when it comes time to install. They require that you download and flash an extra Google applications zip file in addition to the ROM zip file. So, install steps would be (after you root):

1. Download and copy to SD the ROM and gapps zip files
2. Restart in Recovery
3. Nandroid backup (to save what you have now, just in case)
4. Wipe data/factory reset
5. Wipe Dalvik cache
6. Flash GSB (or GT)
7. Flash Google apps
8. Restart

xtrROM or TaintedTenzo will not require step 7, as they already include the Google apps that you need. As you go through the Root for Dummies method, you'll see what all of these steps are (they are in the fourth post in that thread.)

Okay, did it all. I loaded up the Cyanogen ROM, and so far all my ailments have been cured. The phone is light years faster and seems like an all new phone. Thank goodness I backed up my files though. I had to restore them a couple times in order to move the ROM file and the gapps file to the root folder. I have a lot of installing and such ahead of me, but I think I'll be much happier with this set up. Thanks everyone.

if you think you might want to change roms again, get the paid version of titanium backup. it will let you do batch save and restore on your apps and makes the transition from one rom to another alot easier
