Reasons to Root !!
Here is a summary of what I achieved by routing and tweaking my 16-month-old Eris last weekend …
· Faster operation (overclocking)
· Smoother operation (less lags/pauses)
· Better battery life (real-time monitoring and adjustments, like CPU speed)
· Bloatware removed (the unwanted stuff that came with the phone is now gone)
· No more advertising (95%+ of all ads are now blocked in apps and browser by AdFree)
· App storage space increased from 75 MB to 7.2 GB (moved all from memory to SD card)
· Free memory doubled (a 130 MB unused block has been liberated as cache)
· Free tethering via wire (USB cable, also charges phone while serving as laptop antenna)
· Free Wi-Fi tethering (my phone is now a hot spot that feeds iPads 60 ft. away)
· Reliable voice control of everything
· Multi-tasking with thumb scrolling (like Apple's Snow Leopard, thanks to Dock4Droid)
I installed the XTRSense ROM, which looks and feels just like my previous HTC Sense interface with all of the HTC widgets and animation. If I had been willing to part with Flash, I would have installed GSB ROM, which would have put GingerBread (Android 2.3) on my aging Eris.
Bottom line: My Eris has new life and will adequately serve my needs until the Droid Bionic is released.
If you haven't yet taken the plunge and rooted, now is the perfect time to do so. The resale value of the Eris is down to about $35, so the risk is minor even if you brick it.

Great post, this brand new android user and Eris owner appreciates it!
BUT where in the world can an Eris be had for anywhere near $35? A cracked screen Eris just went for > $55 on ebay. Best refurb price I've seen is still > $100... TIA

Wow. I haven't seen asks below $100 on CL, and I haven't wanted to waste a bunch of time when the true status of the Eris might be questionable to begin with.
FWIW if anyone has these in decent shape with clean numbers to sell at $50, I'd certainly be interested.
All I mean is that when you're buying used on CL, there's no warranty; it might not look good on inspection as it is billed; you have to check for clean numbers; etc.
Many of them are perfectly fine, but if I could get a refurb with a warranty for $100-$110, I'd probably lean that direction myself. FWIW.

Oh. That's why I'm skeerd to buy anything off of the internet or anything else that I can't put my hand on it before I buy it.

One just went up for sale in the classifieds for 90.00. HTC Eris
I found an excellent condition one here in Austin for $60 but it didn't have the box or original charger (aftermarket one was included). It had a screen protector and a beat up case but the phone underneath was quite clean and scratch free.
I picked up one more phone for $75 locally on Craigslist.
That's the best I've been able to do. Most are asking 100+ and when I offered $75, they told me to bugger off.
If you can buy them on CL for $50 or less (clean), you should ebay them as you can sell them for 80-100 all day long.

Polphi:
I got the $35 price from Verizon Wireless. It was their trade-in value for an Eris in good condition (powers up, uncracked screen, etc.). Today, their trade-in value has dropped to just $20! So, the Eris is truely a disposable phone.

Calm down, avatars can be as misleading as Craigs List, and shame on you for your eBay deception!

That sounds consistent with my experience.
TB, striking that Vz will only pay $20, given this demand. If anyone offered me even $30 in good shape, I'd buy as many as they would sell to root and give to family members...and any not wanted could be flipped easily on ebay for double that.

I'm calm! I said I liked it...
Wat are you talkin about deception? Screens alone go for around 80 and this one was perfect cosmeticly. I listed it non functional,no deception. Point is you could sell dirt and rocks on eBay and people would buy them
Okay, Scotty, I retract my shame comment. Sorry 'bout that. You didn't state previously that you listed the phone as nonfunctional on eBay.
sorry i wasnt more specific, but in my mind thats what i meant by this statement:

i found a broken ipod touch and droid x that was sposed to be stuck in bootloader mode on craiglist for $100. i checked ebay and found that broken Xs typically went for what they guy wanted for both so i bought em i never could get the X to work,so i sold it for parts with a full dedcription of its condition and what i had tried to do it fix it. i couldnt beleve someone actually bought it. guess if you had an x with a broken screen it was worth it... you got an extra battery and other parts with it. no way id ever mis-represent somethin like that.
hoping i could fix the ipod and have it for the cost of parts but so far that hasnt worked out

hey I just rooted my eris for the specific reason of moving my apps to my SD card so I can actually get more than 2 legitimate apps. Can you point me to a forum that will tell me how to do this? Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I'm using an app call SuperBox that allows me to move apps to the SD card.

does that app partition your sd card,BC?
froyo and gingerbread roms have a feature that let you move apps to the sd card built in.
just go to settings/applications/manage apps then go to each app youd like to move, and it will have an option "move to sd card". you just cannot put widgets and things on your homescreen on the sd card. those must remain in memory.
i believe that the app is moved back into phone memory when you open it,so apps on the sd may take a hair longer to launch if theyre large. if you find this to be the case, you might want to leave apps that you use alot in phone memory
if you want to use a 2.1 based rom(xtrsense) there are some things that you have to do to set it up,wich are described in the developers thread. ive never done this while running a 2.1 rom,so im not familiar with it.

Good question Scotty, I ran across this app the other day. It does a whole lot more than just move apps. One thing it does do is when I download an app it will tell me if I can move it to sd card. I don't think it patitions the card nor do I think it moves them permintly to the card because when I did the fresh install I had to move them again.

where would i go about finding a froyo rom that will work on my droid eris
I'm running Link2SD to move apps to SD. I thought it might be easier than moving my widget apps back to internal memory. It is working but I'm not sure I like it.
