Default Unroot or New Rom?.. Bad Kaosgingerbread Install

I'm new to this. Hence, the incorrect vocabulary used describe whatever, below.

I rooted my phone. I think I installed...
Rom/Model #?: KaosGingerbread
Android Version: AOSP
Kernel Version: 2.6.29-DecaFuctCFS-dirty-cd76c7c1 conap@conap-laptop #20 (sounds sketchy)

I didn't do my research on this Rom and I hate the fact that it is not fully complete. No camera, no landscape typing, MY MARKET IS MISSING AND THE STUPID PHONE DOESN'T LET ME DOWNLOAD ANY FILES FROM THE INTERNET, etc!!!

I want to either unroot my eris all together and downgrade to that Froyo rom (whichever rom is a version downgrade and a lot more complete) or just restore to its factory settings. I like the Android 2.2, that's Froyo right?

I have read just about every forum and instruction given to unroot, hard reset, restore to factory settings, how to unroot using mac, etc... the phone, but none of them work for my case.

My Special Case
  • I have a Mac
  • I can't use parallel right now because I don't have a HD to back up my data through time machine so I can install a Microsoft OS
  • Remember, my eris is saying "download unsuccessful" every time I try to download directly from my phone. Including Market
  • ummm... I think that is it.
  • Nvm... I have tried that nandroid back up.. flash sd card thing? but I guess I didn't back up v1.6 because it just brings me back to Gingerbread every time!
  • Ok.. I think that's the complete list that makes my situation special

I hope someone can help me! I really want to figure this thing out so I can feel accomplished and tech saavy!

I think that you are better off with Condemned CM7 than with any of the Froyo ROMs at this point - with the the exception of KaosGB (I wish he would just pull that thing), they are all stable and feature-complete.

You should be able to start in Recovery (hold down VolUp while powering up). Connect the phone by USB cable to the Mac. Go to the second menu option - USB-MS - hit the trackball, follow the prompts, and it will open an external drive on the finder on your Mac (probably called NO NAME). That is the SD card on your phone.

Download Condemned CM7 and the Google apps package and copy those zip files to your SD card (using the Mac).

Condemned CM7: Multiupload.com - upload your files to multiple file hosting sites!
Google apps: Multiupload.com - upload your files to multiple file hosting sites!

After the copies are complete, unmount the NO NAME drive from the Finder on the Mac and, when it disappears from the Finder, press the trackball to return to the Recovery menu.

Now, do these steps:

- wipe menu
- wipe data/factory reset
- wipe Dalvik cache
- go back to the main menu
- flash a zip file menu
- choose Condemned_CM7_V5.zip
- do flash a zip file menu again
- choose the google apps zip file
- restart the phone

It should be all set.

I would download, [ROM][4/25/2011] GSB v3.0 | GingerBread 2.3.3 [CM7.0.2 NIGHTLY] - xda-developers. I have been running this rom since it was on 1.5 or something. Everything works on it. Now if you are going to try a froyo rom nonesensikle is a good one.

Just put the new rom on your sdcard, the root of the sd card. Get into recovery wipe, factory and devilk cache. Then flash the rom and the gapps. DON'T FORGET TO FLASH THE GAPPS. You need that so you will have all the apps you enjoy. No need to unroot, to many roms to chose from, and enjoy.

It worked! Thank you so so much! Now, can I download a new ROM? Do I need to re-install rom manager or does it come equipped? What do you suggest I do next?

no!

what i would reccomend you do next,is become comfortable wiping, backing up,and flashing in recovery. rom manager can and will cause you prollems, recovery is much safer.

once your comfortable with doing things manually in recovery,if you still feel the need to use rom manager(for whatever reason) then go ahead. but at least youll have the knowledge and skills to recover your phone when rom manager goofs it up.

if you wish to flash a new rom,go ahead. or you might stay with condemned cm7 for a few days and see how you like it. im finding it incredibly fast and smooth

You can surely flash a new ROM if you like. xtrSENSE is a good, stock based ROM - everything just works.

The only difference with xtrSENSE is that you do not need to flash a google apps zip file - it includes the Google apps in the xtrSENSE zip file. Also, I would do a Nandroid backup of what you have now - this will allow you to go back to Condemned CM7 without having to reinstall, just go back to how everything was at the time that you backed up.

So, download xtrSENSE and put it in on the SD card. Then, from Recovery:

- Backup/Restore menu
- Nandroid backup
- back to the main menu
- wipe menu
- wipe data/factory
- wipe Dalvik
- back to main menu
- flash zip menu
- choose xtrSENSE (or whichever one you decide to try)
- restart

[ROM][GPL][3/15/2011] xtrSENSE5.0.1 [cache2cache,apps2sd,oc,jit]-HTC Sense - xda-developers

Thank you all. You guys have been tremendously helpful. Another question the programs icon mysteriously disappeared from my home screen. When I click and hold down on the screen it only lets me add the application search widget. I want a program /application icon in the dock. When I try to add the widget to the dock, it does not allow me. There is now a little star where the program list icon use to be. Any suggestions?

Hmm, that's ADW. I don't use that much.

Try long-pressing on the home screen. Choose "Launcher Actions". Choose "Open/close App Drawer". This should put a boxy-looking icon on the home screen that says "Open/close". Drag that icon to the spot in the dock where you want it to go - it should replace whatever was at that spot in the dock.
