I have a rooted eris, been running a cynogenmod rom for a while, and im trying to flash a new rom but when i get to the recovery menu to wipe data/flash from sd card, the trackball or volume button wont let me scroll through the menu??

boot back into your rom and install this: Amon_RA 1.6.2 Custom Recovery: trackball not required!

IMO it should be the standard eris recovery,considering the frequency of this prollem
