Are you looking for the image itself or just how to change it? Here is how to change it to something else and I've done it many, many times lol. Works great. I would imagine you can probably pull the image somehow but I haven't searched for that yet

My suspicion it that it is hardcoded into the bootloader - format unknown (or possibly rgb565). That's just a hunch which comes from dumping the "sp1" partition on my Eris using the S-OFF oem commands - it is empty.
Somebody can correct me if I am wrong, but I think the way the bootloader behaves is that it looks for some evidence that the "sp1" (aka "splash1") partition is non-null, and will load an alternate rgb565 image from that partition if it is present - or default to the hardcoded image if nothing is in there. Since none of the ROMs touch the "sp1" partition, it never gets changed by ROM-flashing operations.
See this post for instructions on creating an image for the sp1/splash1 partition.
I realize that this doesn't answer your question - and it also doesn't really let us know what format the "hardcoded" image might be in in the bootloader - because the bootloader is a custom piece of code for the Eris - it has direct access to the video framebuffer. Although it does seem reasonable that if the bootloader needs to interpret RGB565 images in the sp1 partition, the default image might also be stored in the bootloader in the same format.

You are correct... There is also a converter in the link I posted to convert a jpeg or png to the RGB565 format

It didn't work for me for some reason... I'll admit to only spending a small amount of time trying this since I was mostly just happy with getting a new recovery built , but I did think it would have been really cool to publish a "scary alien"-stamped version of the custom recovery (with all due respect to RA, of course).
Are you looking for the image itself or just how to change it?
i actually was just looking for the IMG file that i could convert and modify. i found this one on XDA: Make your own splash -- HOW TO - xda-developers and see no reason it wouldnt work on the eris as well... ill just take the android_info from scary and my hboot flashable recovery and pack it up with my new image, renamed to splash1 your link provides the size, and a an image with the skateboard guys i could copy,so thats good info.
and many thanks to eu1,as usual for the goog info you provide!
scary you should do it! a custom alien splash with trackball optional recovery would be sweet!!
Okay, so I gave it the old college try...no joy [I got my laptop issues resolved though].
I'm pretty sure I built my initlogo.rle file correctly (by the way, there's apparently an RGB565Converter v0.3c converter built into Gimp (I used a stand-alone install that I had)).
I'm guessing that since the instructions were pretty old and G1-specific, there must be some differences from the Eris.
Didn't boot-loop or anything though...I flashed the special recovery image with the initlogo.rle file in the ramdisk.
I do have another idea to try... I'll post back if that bears any fruit.
Meh...the image behind the recovery text must be in the kernel...
I tried unpacking one of the "carebear" versions of Amon_RA's custom recovery and looking for the image files or a file of the proper size. It doesn't appear to be in the ramdisk, therefore, it must be in the kernel.
Probably missing something, but its time to hang the brain up for the night.
G'night and cheers!
