CIFS support in CM7 Eris ROM? Or CIFS+Cache2Cache in Froyo ROM?
I was surprised to learn that CIFS support isn't built into CM7 ROMs. The following procedure looks like it might work, and the Unix command-line stuff makes sense and is not intimidating to me, but I have no idea whether these Droid "library" components are plug-compatible with the Eris.
I would like to be able to natively connect to the music files on my NAS so I can build playlists directly on my phone. There are lots of playlist programs, and lots of programs that know how to connect to SMB filesystems, but none that I know of that can do both. So I figured that CIFS plus a Playlist builder is what I need.
Alternatively, if there's a super-stable Eris Froyo ROM which supports Cache2Cache and also has CIFS support, that would be fine, since there are no 2.3 features that I'm particularly attached to (but lots of such 2.2 features). Cache2Cache looked pretty questionable with KaosFroyo, which I was using prior to switching to GSB.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions, or let me know if anything needs clarification.
A questions for CondemnedSoul: when you build one of your ROMs, is 'cifs.ko' [the loadable module required for CIFS support] also built as a side-effect, but not included in the files which you distribute?
OK... I have it for the Hero but not the Eris. I'm going to talk to Conap soon as I can catch up with him to see if maybe we can do something to get it working on the Eris with his kernel.

Thankyou kind sir...I need to read more about this stuff before I post.
I too would like this. I've used Windows mobile since 2001. Guess I've been spoiled. I had not even considered this would not be standard on all android builds. I'm actually more surprised by the lack of demand for it as well.. It seems most people aren’t that interested in cifs support.
You know, Conap removed CIFS support from his CFS kernel V9, but I assume that version 8 supported it. Since the kernel in CM7 is just a slight variation of CFS V9, you could make a Nandroid backup and try flashing version 8 over the ROM. You can find a link to V8 if you read carefully enough here: [GPL]2.6.29.6 CFS Kernel V9 12/10/10 - Page 5 - xda-developers

I am comfortable inserting a module which was built for a slightly different kernel but don't want to use a kernel which is both out of date and not completely matched with the rest of the operating system.

If you make a Nandroid backup before you flash the kernel, it will be easy enough to go back to what you have after you do some quick testing by doing a Nandroid restore - it will bring your phone back to the state that it was at the time that you ran the backup, including the currently running kernel.
