THIS IS EARLY ALPHA TESTING, IT WILL NOT BLOCK ALL ADs. REPORT ADs THAT SHOW UP PLEASE.
This is an early public alpha test, the ad database is VERY Small and will not block many ads. The purpose of this test is to build up the ad database. I need people to use, and then report what APPs they still see ads in.
Unlike other adblockers, this app does not edit files on your system, and can thus work with nand locked devices. Requires root.
Please read the license before enabling ad blocking. By using this software, you agree to report ads that show up in APPs to me.
I will enable the widgets, and on boot and other options after the ad list is built up to reasonable size.
Linking to pirated/illegal software: It's a shame I actually have to touch on this. Don't do it. It will be removed and repeat offenses will result in a ban.
Nice work! I can't surf on my laptop or desktop without some adblock software installed (typically ADP). I have noticed the Admob ads on my Eris, and while I don't find them too obtrusive, I would be more than happy to get rid of them.
With the weather example, it just looks weird without the ad there. It is replaced with a big blank. I usually don't have any problems with ads as long as they aren't blinking at seizure speed.

Its not even in beta testing yet, but honestly with most apps thats not an issue. That one uses a proprietary ad framework from what I can tell, and seems to be one of the only (the only?) app using that setup.
To date thats the only one that doesn't recovery screen space fully. I can test it on other apps, just request here.
Gotcha. Well, most of those willing to click on the ads are probably not going to install this app.
Will this app just keep the ads from showing or stop the app from getting the ad content?
We appreciate that you are willing to release this app!
Both, it interrupts the fetch process, keeping it from fetching the content, and interrupts the framework, keeping from displaying anything ad framework.

The Following User Says Thank You to jcase For This Useful Post:
Opt'd to wait til work and school life settles down a bit, over releasing a beta app without all the features I want in it. Soon as this 1/4 of school is over, ~30days, I will resume work.
I have added OTA updates of the ad database to the working feature list.
Device(s): Eris Rooted running NonSensikal Froyo 7.0 Blue

I just wanna chime in here and say that I am another one eagerly awaiting this and cant with to test it out when you release it. Keep up the good work!
Ad Free is available in the Market...does the same thing quite well!
Just installed AdFree from the Market, and it seems to block ads successfully but it does not recover the screen space in apps. It just leaves the space black, and has the little circle of dots constantly moving (like when something is loading).
I'd pay/donate for the version jcase was working on if it ever gets finished
I uninstalled AdFree, but it still seems to be "blocking" my ads somehow. The ad area is blank, with the spinning circle, but no ads show up... and the app is nowhere to be found... Any idea on how to uninstall it for real, so I can test yours properly?

You will have to create a new hosts file, I will add a feature to do this.
Yes it requires root, but all Eris can be rooted now, so help your sis out.
Now, using aDroid, I see ads in every app I can think of that has ads. Was I supposed to do something in addition to the "enable" button? Or is this just due to the hosts file not being ready yet?
And as far as the reporting... do you want it here or on XDA? (is there a thread there for it?) And do you want the app name, or the actual ad? (or both?)

aDroid doesn't use no stinking hosts file!
As original post says, the ad database is very small. I started from scratch, and unless an ad is added to the database, it won't be blocked.
I have to manually add to it (not hard), but I have to have reports of what apps are still displaying ads. I will be adding over the air updates to the ad database once people start giving me reports.

Does it block individual ads, or "groups" (hosts? I dunno) of ads? I mean like... say you find 1 ad, and add it to your database however you are doing it... will that only block that 1 ad? Or will it block all ads from that specific advertising company, or anything like that?
Thanks guys, some of them I have already added, rest I will work on. v0.0.4 tomorrow. I want to put it in the market with a nice database for beta trials at 0.1.0, so this really helps.
When I can, I group block. If I can't then I decide if I want to "spend" the resources on just one ad.

Advanced Task Killer
Newsrob
Wapedia are also still displaying ads
I'm using this on a Samsung Galaxy Spica so I don't know if that makes a difference. By the way is there a list of apps that are already successfully affected by the program?

Thanks, no I am not releasing a list, as Its not always successful on all ads the first time around. I really don't want "OMG U SAID IT BLOCKES XXXXX BUT IT DOESNT. ITS CRAP" posts that apps get when features dont work how the user thinks they do.
Not saying you would do that, just saying someone would.
This should work on every android device with su, even nand locked ones.
Thanks, I setup a form for reporting bugs and ads here aDroid - Ad and Bug Reporting Form . Ad and bug reporting has been implemented into Version 0.0.4
I'm still seeing ads in various apps that are already listed. I realize you can't necessarily update to include all of them yet, but I don't report them since they're already reported. Astro, for example, is one.

hallstevenson,
If people don't report ads that are still showing up, I don't know that they are still showing up. I am working ona diagnostic option, that will dump to a file for me. This will be in 0.0.6 and will help a lot.
my astro just has a blank ad with the little loading icon, but an actual ad never pops up. jcase, do you want us to report the actual ad that pops up in the programs?

I understand that aspect of it. I guess it's safe to say that just because someone reports it once, it doesn't mean it's taken care of.
You said here or at XDA that you're not going to post a "list" of apps that you've blocked ads in, correct ? That would help though... If you say "Ads should be blocked in ..." and they still appear in one of those listed, we'd know to inform you (again).
