Default Weird Red Light

Anyone know what a red light by the Proximity Sensor means? It is red red not like the orange when charging. Also I had some weird headset symbol in the top bar. Any help would be appreciated

No it is not the same as the charging led it is a weird dark red light next to the proximity sensor.

The image you see is obviously flipped. So the light on the left is the regular charge and notification LED. The light on the right is next to the verizon check mark. That's the red light. Strange enough though the light finallay turned off immediately after taking this pic.

Optical Illusion

Reflection off the mirror you are pointing your phone at.

That "imaginary" red light that you claim is coming from the Proximity sensor is too low.

The Proximity sensor and the Charge/Notification LED are at the same level.

Looking at my phone at the same area, it is solid black so impossible for any light to be emitted from there.

Yes I am trying to trick all you people. Haha. Are you ******ed. Just because it hasn't happened to you doesn't mean it isn't real. I have better things to do during the day then sit around and make up hoax post. Thanks for your help. If someone knows what is going on I would appreciate the help. It may be lower than the proximity sensor but it looks like it is near it.

I am sick of this forum no one here is helpful unless it comes to leaks or swype so I don't understand why I would expect a decent answer on another topic. I am done with this place. **** you all that think you are smarter than everyone. If you don't have an answer then don't reply

Is the top left corner/center of your screen raised/lifted/cracked/beveled in any way?

you cant see it with the naked eye, i am surprised you were able to photograph it.

you know how the eris can auto dim and automatically get brighter depending on the light situation? you know how it does that? a light sensor. thats what that thing is.

if you want to see it, go outside on a bright sunny day and look at your phone (almost parallel). you will see it.

The position does seem a little low for the proximity sensor, unless it's the angle. Even for a reflection. There is no bulb/LED there that I am aware of.

if Im not mistaken ........ that light IS the prox sensor..... the little bulb looking thing actually is an ambient light sensor...... there are 2 sensors in that area (the prox sensor is behind the black).......... why this would be lit is beyond me unless its faulty........

before this started did you install any app that may be utilizing the prox sensor? its possible the app has a bug............ or maybe a flashlight app thats written poorly and trying to use the prox sensor as a bulb?....... dunno just throwin out ideas

but that light is coming from the prox sensor and should never be

First, Redplate my apologies. You have to understand that to the naked eye it appears as if there is nothing in that area except a solid black area.

My curiosity got to me, especially after you seemed to be genuinely upset.

I took a macro photo with flash enabled and look what I see?!

Sorry bout that.

Not sure what it can be. Anyone??

yea, I see a darker black circle in that area as well. You can see it better when in direct sunlight. I noticed it a while ago but never thought anything of it.

Who knows what that light means?

EDIT: see above ^^^

Its the ambient light sensor. Apparently yours is on fire! Immediately throw your phone in a bucket of water quick!

But really its kinda creepy. Try a hard reset if your so inclined and see if that changes anything. It IS the ambient light sensor (How your phone knows how bright to be when you turn on auto brightness)

Sorry I got so pissed. I just had a shitty day. That's it though. It doesn't glow super bright but it is a deep red. It only turned on when the screen was on. Now it is gone. There is either some kind of light in there or whatever it was it was red hot

Was it hot to the touch ? i was about to put out a theory that it was actually light bleeding through from the back light for the screen. Say if there was a little separation that was allowing the hight intensity light from the screen to bleed into the ambient light sensor which does have a red lens. If it was actually hot then my theory seems incorrect. However, if it was only light, this may be the case.

It all started when I plugged it in yesterday. At first it got a little warmer than ussual. Then I had some weird thing in my notification bar that looked like the headphones but with a microphone thing. Like a headset. Then I noticed the red light. During this time when I tried to make phone calls the sound was choppy on both ends. It was not low signal. Eventualy the thing on the notification bar went away but the red light stayed on over night until literally 5 seconds after I took that pic. I have not had a chance to call Verizon on the matter yet.

Actually I'll bet that what was emitting the light was in fact the proximity sensor and the other lens is the ambient light sensor. It would seem that proximity sensors are IR range finders with an effective range of less than an inch. It emits an IR pulse and if it is reflected the the screen is disabled. If there is no return the screen remains on.

I know the article I have linked is for a Motorola but it bears this out. I have done a little more leg work and the sensors are manufactured by the same company. Check out the picture and it will look a bit familiar.

It may also be IR...like a TV remote you cant see the light with the naked eye, but if you use a digital camera you can see the light emitted from it....

Mine flashes purple, but only when in a phone call which would indicate it is the proximity sensor. The more visible sensor above and to the left is probably the ambient light sensor used if brightness is set to automatic.

And I can not see it with the naked eye, only thru my digital camera. Sounds like the proximity sensor is going bad if it's emitting visible light. Is the proximity sensor working? Does your screen go black when in a call and you hold the phone up to your ear (or just cover the proximity sensor with your finger)? Also is that area hot, or has your battery life decreased greatly. Might be an electrical short which overheats electronics and would produce the red glow you describe.

Default red light/ headset symbol

MY phone is actually doing the EXACT same thing.

This is gross but i forgot there was a mayo packet in my jacket pocket. It busted without my knowledge. THe slime seeped into my phone, and now that same glowing red and headset symbol are showing atop my phone. I think I may have permanently ruined it, and I seriously don't wanna pay for a replacement.

Anyone figure out what causes that?

Default ok guys.... sorry if this is a little late

but i feel i need to share this. the same thing happened to me and i did some testing... found out this is caused by a short in the headphone jack, thus the headphone symbol as if there was one plugged in but with an error. and i dont know if this is actually implemented as my eris no longer works so i can't see but the proximity sensor is wired in line with the headphone jack to turn them off of you're holding it to your ear thus shorting out the prox sensor causing the red glow. hope this provides you with some info

I've had the same thing this morning, it was on when I woke, it stayed on until I found this post..... It really strange..... It did look like a mechanical eye, a red circle with a smaller red dot on the inside of the circle. I didnt get the headphone symbol, nor was it hot.... I had my finger over it, did want it creapily looking at my whilst I was on the internet. Maybe it was the prolonged putting my finger over it that turned it off if its the ambient sensor.
