Default Unable to receive SMS or MMS (but can send ok)

I've been running KaosFroyo v34 on my eris for the last few months with no problems. About a week ago I noticed that I was not receiving any SMS text messages. I tried sending test SMS and MMS messages to my phone but did not receive any of them. I checked my settings but all looked normal. I even tried a nandroid restore from a backup made a couple weeks earlier, but still could not receive any texts. I have verified that I can still send texts from my phone but can not receive any.

Finally in desperation I called Verizon and spoke with their tech support people. After going through a number of reboots and battery pulls they suggested a factory reset. I had some other obligations at that time and had to get off the phone, so I told them I knew how to factory reset the phone and would call them back the next day.

I used that opportunity to upgrade to KaosFroyo v39. The next day when I called back we went through more battery pulls and *228's. Finally tech support told me that they thought it was a network issue and would open a ticket on it. I just got a call back this afternoon from Verizon and they told me that their network is fine and to bring my phone into a Verizon store so they can troubleshoot it and replace it if it is a phone issue.

Has anyone else ever had a problem like this? Is it even possible that there is a phone bug that requires replacement that only stops incoming texts from being received but doesn't affect outgoing? More important, is there any hope that Verizon would replace a phone that's over a year old? Or am I going to just have to buy a new one anyway?

Thanks

I haven't experienced this or seen this before so I can't help you there. But, in one more attempt to fix it I would wipe all your data, to a reset, and flash a different ROM, I suggest Tazz Froyo if you want something like Kaos. If you're still having that problem then you probably will have to take it in and get a new one. They will replace it if they deem it a problem of the phone that wasn't directly you're fault, if you have insurance they have to. You just have to make sure you unroot that before taking it in, because if they see that it's rooted then you're SOL and they won't help you

See this: rooted not receiving text messages

If that doesn't work (follow the steps in the link), then I suggest flashing the 2.1 Flashback ROM and going in to Verizon to let them fix it, then re-root and try a ROM again.

Problem resolved after installing flashback ROM. I am very relieved that I don't have to go to verizon and beg for (or more likely buy) a new phone.

I didn't see @doogaid's post until after I installed flashback ROM and unrooted phone, but I think that the link describes exactly what happened. And as soon as I booted up after installing flashback ROM the queued up text messages from the last couple days flooded in. I will re-root but stick with stock ROM for a while and play some Angry Birds which didn't run under KaosFroyo.
