The process com.htc.bg has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again...wtf
Ever since upgrading to 2.1v2, I get this message probably every hour. Sometimes it comes up on its own, sometimes when I am opening applications, etc...

Anyone else get this with the 2.1v2 leak?
Thanks
yes, I get it too. Turn off Facebook sync and it should stop. That's the only workaround I've found. Not sure what's causing it.

Mandirae16 posted this very same problem in another thread and the solution there seemed to be that she (and others) run Spare Parts in aggressive mode and it causes this to happen. Are you running Spare Parts?
I dont use facebook nor have i set it up on this phone. How do i turn off the sync
hmm... that's a good question then. For me, turning off Facebook sync stopped me from getting the error. Menu<settings<accounts and sync<choose Facebook and uncheck sync contacts. If you don't have Facebook it might be one of the other accounts that sync.

I'm not upset at all, actually. Is that your goal? I'm just trying to help someone out with a question that deals with something I've experienced.
Great question, about goals here.
I'm here to try to pick up more knowledge about Android in general, that's why I read in all the different phone forums at this site even though the only Android phone I have is an Eris.
Plus I kid around a lot, but that's not a "goal" here. If somebody gets upset, and you did, then that is also outside of any goal oriented motive I have here; getting people upset seems to be a natural consequence of hitting certain sensitive areas they have, most often by accident. Some here do that, or attempt to do that, quite intentionally, though, it appears.

You've gotta love internet forums. It's so easy for these communication break downs to occur. I'm trying to figure out how you decided I was getting upset. In my first reply to your "kidding around", I included a smiley face so as to let you know I understood your joke and I commented by saying "funny", (also written lol, haha, etc.) Maybe I should have included a few more smiley faces or maybe I chose the wrong type of smiley icon, who knows? I'll try to be more clear next time.
The fact is, I've been lurking around this forum for a while now and I have read many of your posts, as well as many of the other "regulars" posts. I have no problems at all with your sense of humor, and I am pretty sure you haven't hit any "sensitive area" that I have.
I think it was either related to Twitter trying to sync, or the Sense UI. I disabled Twitter from syncing up Peeps, and I turned on HOME versus Sense UI.
I'm also getting this error com.htc.bg. Googled it and sent me right back here. I did a search on the boards and nothing. I'll try turning off twitter as I don't use it and check out the spare parts thing.

yea try the twitter thing first. I know for a fact that was the culprit for me..because right when I turned it on...whether it would go out to receive updates..it would fire and force close. Disabled, and I don't get it since.
I am having the same problem. I get the com.htc.bg force close error aswell. I have found out that the Facebook friend/contact sync is causing the error. Everytime I try to sync the facebook contactlist I get the error. So I cant get my contacts to sync up with my facebook friends.. Really annoying.
I only get the error when I try to sync facebook contacts. It would be very nice if someone got a clue of what to do
If it matter, I'm using an HTC legend.. brand new.. no other apps installed..

com.htc.bg facebook sync error
Okay, my girlfriend has just got the HTC Desire for herself and 1 for me, she is getting the error message all the time and cannot link her contacts to Facebook however I can.
I logged into my account on her phone and was able to sync my contacts fine. Tried this on my phone with her account, guess what, ERROR MESSAGE!
So basically this means there is absolutely nothing wrong with her phone, it is something to do with her Facebook account.
Can not be anything to do with privacy settings on Facebook because my account is locked down, the same as hers. Only difference is my Facebook account is registered to my Hotmail email address, hers is Googlemail.
Going to change her email address and see if this fixes. Will post update.
UPDATE!!! :-
Okay, changed email address assign to her Facebook account, still got the error message and could not sync contacts.
However (and a lot of you are not going to like this), created a new Facebook account with her Googlemail address as a test, added me then synced with her phone. worked perfectly fine and synced my Facebook with my contact card on her phone.
FIX!!! :-
We have found the fix! go to the PEOPLE(contact list) app. Go to the Online Directories (globe) tab. Hit Facebook. You will be asked to log in to your Facebook account. Once logged in, it will show all of you contacts on your Facebook account. Go back to the full list of your contacts on the phone and try and sync.

The fix helped me to get the FB contacts into the phone (did not work before) but I do still get that Damn annoying error message
Use the setup program (the one that you got the first time you started the phone), go through it until you reach the facebook opions. Log out, and log in again. Worked fine for me

I'm getting this problem too. I logged in with someone else's facebook account and it synced...would really like to Not create another facebook account...I've tried reflashes, log ins and outs..the whole gammot!
hey guys just wanted to let you know that this helped me in fixing my problem and it makes sense now that it is fixed..
my parents actually picked up my phone for me so when it was delivered to me there were no contacts what so ever. After I tediously transferred my contacts into my droid by hand I was perplexed as to why i couldn't get the pictures off facebook. every time I went to the People>Online Directories>Facebook, it said 0 friends.. Even tho I had the app and widget working and registered, all it took was to hit the menu button in the screen where it says 0 friends and hit the update button, it took about a min or so but eventually loaded all of my friends. Now that they are loaded I am able to go through the contacts and link them to their prospective facebook page.
I have been told that as people update their profile pics it will show in your contacts as well. The error message I believe is sent out when the phone is trying to update the contact photo, however I had '0 friends' for it to do so.
Hence, if you do not use facebook or your directory is not update you will recieve this error message.. I hope this helps some people as I am pretty new at this!
So I don't know if this will work for everyone that is having this issue.. but it looks as though the apostrophe in my Irish last name may be causing my facebook sync issue.
- went to facebook and changed my last name (removed the apostrophe)
- removed the facebook htc sync on my phone from settings>Accounts & Sync
- re-added the Facebook for HTC sync
Then my contacts started loading.
I'm going to change it back to having the apostrophe later to see if it breaks it again.
I'll report back later

I had this problem to. I believe it has something to do with calendar storage. If you go into the settings andanage all apps look for calendar storage and then click clear data. Should fix it, I haven't had the problem since
Contacts mess up & com.htc.bg process error message titles
It's wierd but true: Names of senders in my text inbox was altered to be that of one of my Facebook contacts. EG: Message center sends a report or fail to send message, and it comes up as a text from a friend on Facebook. It was fixed only when blocked the contact fro the Facebook site, then it all went back to normal. As this thread has shown before, the FB sync will cause my HTC Desire to show the error message. Disabling the FB sync feature set this straight. I'm a happy camper once again :-)
I heard that, if you start a fire and dance around it naked... with the phone in your left hand while chanting the words "Android will obey" then your problems should be fixed.
oh wait... nvm

Reason: tested....didnt work
I'm having this same problem. I only get the error when I try to sync with Outlook using HTC sync.
-I've uninstalled/reinstalled HTC sync about 5 times (literally).
-I'm not syncing my phone with FB so it can't be that.
-I'm also not syncing with GMail so it can't be that either.
-I've cleared cache & data for calendar and that has not helped.
Beyond frustrated....process com.htc.bg FC...can you help pls?
I know there are a few other threads on this error but none of them matches my situation. FWIW I have tried all the suggestions from the threads but no dice so far.... I'm beyond frustrated and would appreciate any help.
Some background: two days ago I got a new/refurb unit from Verizon for some lag/dialer/sensor issues. When I got the new unit I immediately installed the 2.1 OTA, factory reset the phone and synced everything with HTC sync just fine. Today is when the issue started.
Here is what happens: I open HTC Sync on my pc and connect the Eris. It comes up just fine and I hit sync. It tries to sync for about 30 seconds before I get this error on the phone: the process com.htc.bg Force Close. Then, the next time I try to connect to HTC Sync I get an error on the Eris that HTC is not found and HTC on the PC does not see my phone.
Here's the troubleshooting I've done so far based on the open threads out there:
-I've uninstalled/reinstalled HTC sync about 7 times now, literally.
-I've rebooted the phone several times as well.
-I've tried a different USB port.
-I'm not syncing my phone with FB so it can't be that.
-I'm also not syncing with GMail so it can't be that either although I have cleared cache/data for it under settings > applications.
-I've cleared cache & data for calendar options as well and that has not helped.
I don't know what else to do as no one seems to know exactly what process this is referring. Several people are convinced it's FB but that just can't be the case with me.
Help?!?!?!?!? Any thoughts/ideas/suggestions?????? I'm desperate....
This may not be the answer that you are looking for, but I really think that if you want to make the most of an Android phone, you are far, far better off syncing over the air with Google Calendar, gmail and gmail contacts than trying to sync with Outlook.
Another thought is to reinstall 1.5 and continue to use it rather than struggle with a version of 2.1 that is clearly not working for you.
Cba read everything so excuse me if this already have been posted there is a temp solution (worked for me not sure it works for everyone else) com.htc.bg stopped etc. In your facebook name for an example i had "Peter 'Hero' Parker" i changed it to "Peter Hero Parker" for some reason when it's syncing it does not like having odd signs like ' in the name so if you take it away the error message should dissapear as well. Sorry for my poor english!

Finally! I've been dealing with this issue for months, and this fixed it. I also have an irish last name.
From what I can tell, com.htc.bg is the background syncing process. If that's true, going into your Sync Settings [settings > accounts & sync] and disabling "Background Sync" should stop the process from force closing ... of course, it'll also mean your phone won't sync anything without you asking it to, which is sort of antithetical being as these are "smartphones".
The one thing I haven't seen listed here - and maybe it's not happening to anyone else - is that my force close is always prefaced by a little bitty window just above the Sense Bar that says "no login info". Does anyone else get this little notice? It's seriously small, I wouldn't be surprised if it was sneaking by.
I just tried the calendar data reset thing mentioned above, and I'll definitely post if that works. I do know that once I got my Facebook contacts to sync the first time, they've been just peachy, so I doubt it's that. I had the calendar set to sync, but for no real reason [I don't really use my GoogleCal ... maybe why I'm always late :/]. I disabled that recently, and maybe clearing its data will end the issue. Idk. I feel like I'm rambling now, anyway, so I'll shush
Go to facebook online and sign in. Go to your applications and delete 'Facebook for Android'. Then go to settings> Accounts & Sync on your phone and remove 'Facebook for HTC Sense. Now restart your phone and go back into Accounts & Sync and add 'Facebook for HTC Sense' again. This should solve the issue with com.htc.bg and your facebook account should now sync properly!

still getting the error and yes it is a facebook sync issue
I've just got an HTC Desire - beautiful phone but I can't get my contacts and calendar into it. Whenever I try, everything works for about 30 seconds and then I get the 'com.htc.bgp has stopped unexpectedly' message and I have to reboot both my phone and the PC to try again. I don't belong to Facebook or any other social network so that can't be the problem, and I don't want to give all my data to Google because of privacy concerns. I've poured my data into Outlook (which I didn't previously use) from MyPhoneExplorer which I used to sync my previous phone (a Sony Ericsson P990i).
What to do? I can't enter 800 contacts and 1000+ calendar events by hand. Is there reliable third-party software to sync the phone? Not a happy beginning to my Android experience.
I've tried everything on this forum and about 4 others and still no luck. Does anyone know if it has to do with how many facebook friends an account has? I added my brother's facebook and my girlfriend's and they both worked fine. I was able to link my phone contacts if, for instance, my brother had those individuals as friends on his facebook. This problem is SO irritating. Anyone tried replacing the phone as an option? I don't see why that would help seeing as it's obviously an issue that is dependent on specific facebook accounts.
HTC desire v2.1 I cleared my Facebook data so I'm logged out of fb. no difference. I cleared the calendar and a few other apps too, but cannot figure out how to un- install peep for Twitter. I wish we could learn about how to diagnose this kind of stuff with better tools than a stick and poke approach. no offence meant to all the helps here- I need to Chase up issue with my SD card which at least appears unrelated now.
Seems that any location within an Outlook contact with an apostrophe " ' " or "<" or ">" will cause this error to pop-up. Took me all day to find my contact with their "Display As:" field = Joe Blow <'Joe Blow@someplace.com'>.
Tip: Problem here is that portions of the transfer actually do occur. It crashes when it hits the "bad" entry. When it crashes it marks all the transfers as failed. Then when you sync the next time you get duplications in Outlook. You can clear out the phone's phone book by going to Menu-Settings-Applications-Manage Applications-Contacts Storage- Clear Data. This will help prevent duplication during the next sync session.
Good Luck

Reason: better clarification
I've been getting same annoying message. Have since the man handed it to me set-up at the STORE. My husband has same phone and is NOT getting the error at all. Called Sprint, they forwarded me to advanced Tech who said "it's a known issue and HTC is working to resolve."
Did hard reset. Still annoying message. Now getting a google syncing error as well.
Ok so I logged out of the HTC Facebook App, deleted my account, and then went back through the setup program that came with my phone and it seems to be working just fine now. not sure what happen because this morning it was working fine and then I started getting this error message. Back on track now.
