Try downloading ASTRO File manager or AndExplorer from the market, this helps me get to anything I've saved on my Sd card (movies, apps, pics,etc..). Find the file you would like to play and click on it and it should ask you what app you would like to use to watch the file, depending on what format.. I use mVideoPlayer, you can get this from the market as well.. Hope this helps!
Thanks Johnny! I will give that a try immediately!
I use atk (i know...) just to get an idea of what's running and after following all directions regarding using handcent other than stock sms and I still see both handcent and messages showing as running (yep, I've killed them too). So if that stock app is still running, what good (other than the coolness and stuff) is it to run another app? I don't want to use both.
Ahh... very well. So If I choose to run handcent, I will be using precious CPU/RAM for it AND messages.... hmmm... is it worth that for all the nifty customization/bubbles/popups... hmmm I dunno. I'll stick with handcent for the time-being. Thanks all!

Handcent is nice, but I just have a problem with duplicate programs. I have two Beautiful widgets, and Lock 2.0. And if I hadn't paid for those, I would probably have deleted them a while ago. But I'm a huge LOST fan(lockscreen) and I like the time/weather widget from Beautiful widgets better than stock so I see both sides of the coin.
Hi everyone! This thread is fantastic. Thank you all for your contributions and thanks to the OP for compiling the best in the first post! I'll definitely be backing out instead of hitting Home all of the time.

You could always use the trackball to scroll down, if you're heavy-fingered on the screen.
I havent found an easy way to change the media volume. mostly i want to be able to mute it BEFORE it plays media. Like a toggle or even just a shortcut to adjust volume. Currently its very cumbersome and volume keys usually change ringer volume except when media is playing at which time its too late.

Any ideas?
I use a widget called AudioManager. It shows you the volume levels for all types of sound (Alarm, Music, Alerts, Ringer, System, Voice) and gives you sliders to adjust them.
Love this thread. I started using Handcent after reading this thread but I am not sure how to disable the stock messenger that came on my phone. So now when I get a text message I get it in two places, 2 notifications, how do I disable?

I haven't read anything about this, if so, please forgive me for posting but...
In the stock keyboard app, the bar which displays word suggestions when you type can be moved around by holding down on it like you would a widget on Sense.
Again, if this has already come up, please forgive me and thank-you for your time...

Open the Messages app (not just widget) click Menu > Settings and pretty much disable everything here, especially auto-retrieve and notifications. That should get you only Handcent's notifications and sounds, etc.
I don't know if anyone has mentioned this, but I stumbled on this by accident today. I apologize if this is common knowledge, but when you are typing, and the text corrections pop up, you can actually move the entire bar if you long press on it. You can move it down and up.
I just found out, that on the phone dialer screen, you can filter your list (recently dialed and all contacts) by punching in numbers.
This filters on BOTH number and name.
For example, typing 5646 will filter the list to all numbers starting with that, and all names containing "John".
I used to go into the people app when I had to dial someone who isn't a favorite, now I use this.
Sorry if this was common knowledge, I don't think I've seen it here yet.
I use ATM (Advanced Task Manager). It has an auto-kill button that I like. It also automatically kills any tasks running that I haven't put on an exclude list (Handcent, Beautiful Widgets, QuickCal). I also have something called Startup Auditor which helps prevent certain apps from re-opening like they tend to on their own.
I'm on 68mb right now .

Heads up to anyone who didn't know like me. You can't send mms via wifi, you need to have the 3G on. I was stupid and spent too much time failing before I decided to google for the answer.
Device(s): Stock Bionic, Ready for commands. Waiting for OTA for ICS.

You did a clean restore? Please elaborate..."Since I did a clean restore for 2.1" meaning that you have or are just waiting to get 2.1? I don't want to get confused. Thanks man!

Look at the new post at Phandroid.com. 2.1 as been released as a download not OTA. This could mean that 2.1 could be coming tomorrow or maybe next week. IDK
I had a camera phone with a flash at one time. Worked as well as tits on a bull....

It's a leaked version. Could be a trap. Willing to bravely test it out.
When you do it this way, you have to do a clean wipe, which i'd been meaning to do anyway to test the task Killer theory.
I'm sure the offical version won't make you wipe clean.Just wait for it if your scared.
You can disable the Sense UI without uninstalling it or rooting the device (which to my knowledge is not yet possible as there are no roms).
To switch to the stock android home manually do:
1. Click Menu > Settings > Applications > Manage Applications.
2. Scroll down until you find an application named "HTC Sense" and click on it.
3. Scroll down to where you can see "Launch by default" and click on "Clear defaults".
3. Then push the Home button (on your phone) and a dialog will pop up showing "Home" and "HTC Sense", check "Use by default for this action" and then click "Home". Now you got "Home" as default.
Just repeat the same process for "Home" to go back to the "HTC Sense" UI.
Alternatively you can use a program on the market place called "Home Switcher" to do this for you.
Kinda of new to this but why would someone want to disable Sense UI? What are the benefits?

2.1 was leaked, supposedly by an overseas employee of HTC. It's possible, but unconfirmed.
A clean restore is also known as a hard reset. It is similar to reinstalling a new OS on your computer. It will wipe your phone clean of everything. If you wanted to, you could sell it to someone that was looking for a phone, and they would have no idea what you did on the phone prior to this reset. It is very thorough.
2.1 is a new firmware, or version of an operating system if we're sticking with a computer analogy. It will wipe the phone clean and put 2.1 on it. Sync your Google contacts before putting 2.1 on there and they'll be right back there when you reboot with 2.1.

Because Sense is extra stuff HTC put on the phone. The Droid and N1 use Home, which is the core Android interface. I use it. I like it better. I think Sense is just fluff and seems to slow down the phone a bit. That's just my opinion, others may find the opposite, or not change at all. I recommend at least trying it out to see how it is. It may take some getting used to, but you'll have to see for yourself.
To do this, go to Settings, Apps, and find Sense. Click on Sense and scroll to the bottom. Hit "Clear DEFAULTS". Then simply hit the Home button and a menu will pop up asking you what program to use to open this. Select Home. There should only be two options, Home and Sense. If you want, you can even select "remember this setting" BEFORE hitting Home. It won't ask you again.
This change is reversible. To go back to Sense, do the above, but to the Home application, when clearing the defaults.

Been trolling the forums for a week or so since I got my new Eris. I love it, its so much better than my LG DARE. I downloaded and installed the leaked 2.1 OS two days ago and while it looks a lot nicer than 1.5 I have a major issue.....Its SLOW to load essential apps
In my experience 2.1 takes longer to open the most basic apps like the stock text and email programs. When the phone is in sleep mode the time it takes for the phone to unsleep and the Lock Screen to appear takes longer than 1.5.
Has anyone else experienced this same issue?

I have found the opposite to be true after installing 2.1. The phone seems snappier and able handle more multitasking. Btw, there's another thread on this main Eris forum devoted to bugs and issues after loading the leaked 2.1. Your post would be perfect for it and you might get more relevant feedback.
Hey Caddyman-Going back and re-reading your basics today, I see many precepts that apply to the new version that applied back in November; I believe my problem with the silent phone issue is compatibility of market downloads or market widget buttons and the 2.1 OS as some of these issues occur with things like wifi, email, and other operations running at the same time. The phone has run somewhat smoother with just a few needed or trusted apps, and I am downloading them one day at a time then waiting to see if the problem occurs. Thanks...again, I just needed to remember to go back to the basics as with most things in education...I also teach part time at a university level as an ajunct professor.

your welcome, yes it is very important, esp if you are running a beta OS, to ensure app compatibility.
caddy,Or Anyone who can answer this...im running 2.1 and Looking to set a toggle JUST for the mobile network on my home screen.i followed caddys directions, but on 2.1 i have to got into "shortcuts"instead of widgets, and the only option i have for setting a toggle is for wifi, any suggestions...?
There IS NO "Htc widget option"when i hold a spot on the home screen,it says "Widgets"...then there is noooo settings option..mind you my Sense UI is Off..
might find a network widget in the market but short of that there is nothing you can do.
curvefish puts out some nice toggles, for 2.1 included. if you want to turn off moble networks, get the "2G/3G" toggle. these will work with Sense and Home both.
Do a search for Curvefish in the market app to find them.

has this tip been posted? probably but I couldn't find it anyway. this is with 1.5, I haven't updated to 2.1 yet but a quick way to put a shortcut on your home screen...instead of having to go thru all the menus... is go into your apps, long press on the program and it will make a shortcut. You can then leave it on your home screen or move it to one of your other ones.
