Stop using your phone and the awake time % will decrease. It's those stuck at 100% EVEN AFTER THE PHONE HAS BEEN ASLEEP that have a problem.

If the awake time % is dropping after the phone goes to sleep then you're fine. If not then I don't know what to say.

Default Battery problems are mostly solved

Hi all,
Like everyone else, I love love love the Droid Eris but have hated battery life and thought I was going to have to return it for this sole reason. So I followed the tips on this and other forums and am FINALLY getting decent battery life. Here are my findings:

1. Conditioning the battery by letting it run all the way down and then charging it up seems to help alot. For best results, do this three days in a row.

2. Get rid of YouMail!!! I love the app, but that single-handedly was keeping my awake times at or near 100%.

3. Disable auto backlighting, and set the brightness to approximately 25%. It's still pretty bright at 25% brightness.

3. Be judicious with your use of the wireless radios, such as Bluetooth, Wifi, GPS, etc.

4. You DON'T have to turn off Mobile Network as has been suggested by avid forum-goers like Grimster. Yes, it will make your phone into a STAR performer for battery life, but taking this step kind of defeats the purpose of having a smartphone, doesn't it?

I am using Handcent SMS as well, but it's mainly because I like the app and not because of battery life issues.

I can only imagine what HTC's upcoming updates will do. At this moment, I am actually happy with the battery life, and I am a pretty active phone user.

Please don't forget the first 3 complete discharge cycles; it has really seemed to help!

Good luck.

make sure you have all visual voicemails uninstalled (including stock verizon app) and cancel visual voicemail with Verizon. that dropped me in to the 20s.

How can you uninstall the visual voicemail that comes on the phone from verizon? Advanced task manager tells you that it can try to remove it but it can cause problems since it comes built into the phones software

Wow, great thread. Just got my phone Friday, found this forum and, like everyone else here, love this phone but not so much the battery life. We'll see how much this helps.

Ok guys I found another killer, but I am not sure if there is anything WE can do. I took yesterday off from work and noticed my battery was good ALL day, in fact this morning I was at 40% off of yeserdays charge. When i woke up I threw it back on the charger for a bit got ready and headed off to the office. Well low and behold, this office is what is killing my phone. It will not run in 3g, it stays in 1x mode and keeps working, thus raping the battery....i got here at 98% and in 15 mins i am at 89%.. Any ideas on a fix?

The 2 rounds of updates coming in dec and jan will address the 3g signal being flaky i think.

Default Sched sync?

I am trying to nip and tuck at battery power wherever I can. Does the OS allow for scheduled intervals for cal/contact/email sync? If so can someone post how to do this

Thanks!

All sounds good over here. One thing...my wife's Eris has had no less than 30 hrs per charge for a good while now. She let's it completely die b4 each charge then does not overcharge. I think that could be a key in all this. More and more use as she's gotten comfortable w her phone, too. She plays Slacker quite a bit and also browses, texts and plays games. All this and she makes a good handful of calls.
My point in all this is to strongly sugggest y'all that have battery issues to try what she's done as far as killing the battery b4 each charge. It may just do the trick!
Hope this helps y'all.

Default Confused

I thought I had fixed my "bug" with SMS and decided to try to power down last night before charging. I was at 28% and everything was fine. I turned off mobile networks and wifi before going to bed. I powered it back up this morning and checked my status and I was at 100%??? What?? Help? Am currently doing the sms fix again.

For what it is worth, I emailed Verizon help about the Eris battery. The person who wrote me back said there is no problem with the battery, and gave me a couple tips. I wonder if Verizon's official line is to deny the battery-issue?

Below you can see the exchange. At the bottom
is my question and then above it is the response. Also no word in the email about the patch/update coming.

Good morning. I will be happy to assist you regarding the HTC Droid Eris phone.

I have researched the HTC Eris Droid and was unable to find any thing about the battery life being an issue. I have provided information below for managing the battery life on the HTC Droid Eris.

These tips and hints below will help better manage battery life:

To turn off the screen, press the Power/End button. The device will continue to function.
To manually manage the brightness of the screen, navigate to Settings => Sound & display => Disable auto backlight. This will disable the auto backlight sensor. The customer can then manually adjust the brightness and modify the backlight setting as desired.
Turn Wi-Fi and Bluetooth off when not in use.
Close any third party applications running in the background that are not needed.
If using Exchange Active Sync email, change settings to download email less frequently. Press Menu => More => Settings => Send & Receive => Set download frequency.
Log out of Google Talk or other IM/chat applications when not in use.

Thank you again for your email regarding the battery life on the HTC Droid Eris. I hope you continue to find the “Contact Us” section of verizonwireless.com a helpful option to resolve any issue you may experience the first time you email us. We appreciate your business and thank you for being a valued Verizon Wireless customer.

Sincerely,

Verizon Wireless

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but when you power the phone on, the awake time measures how long your phone is awake vs how long the phone has been powered on. If you start your phone and look at your phone for the first 10 mins, your awake time is going to be 100% because it's been on for 10 mins and you've been actively using it for 10 mins. Once you put it to sleep/stop using it, that will obviously go down.

Hope this makes sense.

Hey guys my name is Jude. I just got my Droid Eris this past Tuesday. I loved it...until I saw how fast the battery went. I never had a smartphone so I figured this is what it did. Until I came across this site. I joined just so I could thank you all for the tips and tricks and I have put them all to good use. Just today I let my battery drain I got 6hrs and 10 mins outta it. It then took 4 hrs and 15 mins to charge. After 30 mins I had went from 100% battery to 85% and I had only made 5 calls. So I came back here and did all the tips and I will do the complet dead and then full charge for then next 3 days to see if that helps. I keep reading about an update for the Eris in December. What will this update do, how will it help/fix and will I have to get a new phone or will my phone just update by itself? Thanks so much for the help and I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving!

just a heads up, it seems to be pretty universal that the battery drains really quickly from 100%-85% for some reason, but then like normal the rest of the way, and sometimes runs really strong for the last 15%. I've used my phone minimally the past 2 days, and i'm going on about 32 hrs and its at 20% which i think is pretty good. I have the mobile network on all the time, but have the "enable always on mobile" unchecked.

Default Wow..

Alright so I just turned off auto-backlight, and I'm starting to notice improvements.

Does Wi-Fi burn more battery than Mobile Network?

What happens if i uncheck "Enable always-on mobile" ?

I believe wifi burns less battery than mobile. I had wifi on over thanksgiving at my girlfriend's family's house, w/ mobile off, played with the phone constantly all day, and put it on the charger at night with 15% left.

Just one last friendly reminder for those putting it on the charger b4 it's dead. As said b4, let it die and watch your battery life soar. My wife's just went for 43 hrs on her last charge w average to high use...lots of internet and slacker as well. Please try this b4 giving up and returning it...it works!!

Not sure if this was mentioned, but a huge thing I noticed was;

"Disable auto backlight" - You want this to be checked. And drop the brightness down to like 25%. It still looks bright as ever, but now the phone won't constantly be adjusting it's brightness. This is a trick that works on the iPhone as well.

I have had my Eris for one day and I am very concerned about the battery life. I checked my always on and it said 49%. I did all the tricks that were posted here, did a reboot and my always on went to 100%. HELP!
I am very close to returning this phone, could someone please offer advice. I am a complete novice to smart phones and I may have bought way over my head with this phone. What is handcent and why do I need it? Do my applications keep running after I exit out of them?

Default Getting more and more...

So my battery life was a little scary for the first few days of ownership. I was recharging twice a day. Here are the changes I made, bringing awake time down significantly from the original 35%, and finally getting a full day's charge out of the phone:

1. Got rid of Messages widget, replacing it with a Handcent shortcut (just because I like it better, not because I think it uses less battery). Turned off notifications for Messages app.

2. Set personal email account to check to check every 15 minutes, work email account to check every 30 minutes, and turned notifications off for the Gmail app (again, personal preference says I like the Mail app better).

3. Uninstalled all app-killer type apps (I had three) and stopped worrying about app killing entirely.

4. Set Twitter (HTC Peep) to check every hour. I have the full-screen widget running so I can manual refresh if I want.

5. I made no reductions whatsoever to the haptic feedback or any vibration at all. Everything vibrates and lights up still. I also never turn off wifi or mobile network.

6. Turned off auto backlight and set it to 25-30%, which is really bright almost all the time.

7. Ran the phone til it died the last 2 days. Charged it all night afterwards.

I am now getting a solid 12% awake time on the phone! My ultimate suspicion is that the brightness setting change and dumping the app killers did the trick, with the full discharges helping lots too.

I wanted to give you some clues as to what has worked for me. I hope these help you get better battery life out of your Eris too!

Ok, so this is kinda important, I realised this this morning.

When you let your phone die, and then plug it to charge up...even if you wait 10 minutes the awake time is still going to e 100%.....because it's plugged in!!

Let it charge up a bit, then unplug it, and then hit sleep, and wait a minute. That's the real way to tell.

My awake time is 38%...and I'm using Handcent

It appears that those that are getting good battery have either unchecked "mobile network - always on" or have set their email to check less frequently or at some interval like 15 min. Is anyone using push activesync "as it arrives" and getting good battery life? I suspect that the software is not efficient enough to allow for always on real time email delivery without a huge hit on the battery. I would love to hear otherwise though.

I know it's even a huge battery killer for the iPhone...so I figure it does the same to the smaller Eris.

Honestly, I've been f***in trying to kill my batter since last night and it's still creping donw at 11%. I have all apps open including youtube and pandora and maps and 3g on and wifi on...

My theoery: It depleats quickly from 100%- like 50%...once it get's lower than that, the battery is a beast.

do you have youmail app? are you using the visual voicemail app? are you using the stock, original, "messages" app for text messages?

also found a new trigger that awakens the infamous messaging app - TEXT messages from verizon. paid my bill today and got a text notification confirmation. then went right back to the 100% awake problem. spent another 2 hours undoing it.

VERY FRUSTRATING

a text is a text. if your 3rd party sms client (handcent, chomp, etc) is set to default you should have no problems.

Not giving this as a solution to anyone's problem but just something you might want to know:

when you are charging your eris from the computer (or have it connected in general), even when the screen is blank it is not sleeping.

This had me worried for a bit cuz i had rebooted it and was charging it on my computer and it kept saying my wake time was 100% even after i let it "sleep" for several minutes at a time. when i took it off the computer and put it on the wall charger wake time started going down. basically dont freak out if wake time goes up while it is connected to your computer

I beg to differ. This morning I pulled it off the charger at 8am and it was at 80% by 8:45. Last night I let it run down and die. Wfi off. Gps off. Nothing unusual running. Had this phone a little more than a week and this is the worst it's been. Maybe a lemon battery, who knows.

No, I don't have the youmail app, and don't use visual voicemail.. I stock message app but I don't text message. I have 10 apps loaded. I don't think any run in the background.

use advanced task manager to see if the messages app is running even though you dont sms. if it is, you still need to run the sms fix thing. you also need to delete any sms widgets from your home screen.

not running on my machine. i did the sms fix thing and it is never running in the background.

Follow the sms fix procedure, make sure you delete the widgets from your home screen and make sure you set Handcent as default sms.

Ok, forgive my ignorance....what is a SMS? What is handcent and why do I need it? I've been reading the threads about battery life and get a bit confused since I don't know the language.

Also, can someone tell me how to change the frequency of checking mail? If I turn off mail notification does that also turn off text message notification?

Thanks for your patience!!

sms is text messaging. I don't know if only some phones are affected by this but I have no problems with anything causing excess awake time and I use the stock messaging app.

My screen timeout is 30 seconds. Hopefully this helps.

P.S. During the workday, I only make a few calls on the cell, and surf the web on my computer, so that could contribute to keeping up my battery's life. Your mileage may vary.
How does turning off background data effect the phone?
