Hey, if you have already rooted could you do a system pull for me and also pull the boot.img? If so i can start porting some of my mods for the Revolution over.

If you can check about ability to get into a) fastboot and b) recovery and let me know where it gets you that would be awesome!

How to:
Fastboot
1) Power off
2) Press and hold both volume up and volume down
3) While holding those press and hold the power button
4) Hold both thru the LG splash screen

Recovery
1) Power off
2) Press and hold volume down
3) While holding that, press and hold the power button
4) Hold both thru the LG splash screen

Let me ask, what is the purpose of fast boot, and why would you try to get into it? I have an LM Optimus M, and it's not a good thing if we get into fast boot.

Unfortunately it may be the only way to obtain root. Looking at the Revo that has had root blocked on the latest update, and the TMo LG G2x had root blocked when it received gingerbread, it looks like LG has found a way to block root. With access to fastboot we can try to port clockwork recovery from the Revo and push it using fastboot (you do not have to have root to push this way). If we can push a working cwm then root can be pushed from cwm.

Default List of bloatware that can be removed with root.

I'm looking for a list of the Metro PCS bloatware & apk file names that can be removed from the LG Esteem after root. Are they the same apk file names as found on the LG Optimus M?

So far I've been able to freeze all of the following apps using Titanium Backup Pro (BACKUP anything you Freeze):

Application Manager 1.1
Appstore 1.5.2
Books 1.4.5
DeskHome 1.0
Email 2.3.4 (I don't need it but you may)
Finance 1.0
Guided Tours 1.0
Home Screen Tips 1.0
IM and Social 4.0.11-0203
ImageEditor 1.2.3
In Touch Intouch.24.03.2011
Loopt 4.5.2
M Studio 1.00.46
Magic Smoke Wallpapers 2.3.4
mail@metro 7.58
Metro BACKUP 1.70
Metro Navigator 6.3.0.35
Metro411 1.0.7.1
MetroPCS Easy WiFi 4.0.136
MobileCare MUC6.1_MPCS_B06_33
MyExtras 4.0.4
myMetro 2.7.2.109659
News 1.0
Photo album widget 1.0
Photo frame widget 1.0
Pocket Express 6.3.0.1
Quick Reference Guide 1.03
Rhapsody 1.0
SmartShare 1.3
Social+ 3.0.10
Swype 3.25.91.31673
Twitter 2.1.1
User Guide 1.07
Virtual Card 1.61
WAP Service 1.0.0
World clock 1.0

Obviously you don't wanna freeze anything you plan on using, i.e. Books etc. Thinking about it I think I'm getting SLIGHTLY better battery performance after doing this. Battery life is still somewhat ridiculous but still better. I've been playing with the phone downloading apps, browsing the web (WiFi and 4G) and other things and haven't had any problems or FCs. Anyway I hope this helps some.

I'm relatively new to the Droid and I have read in other forums that deleting some apps can mess up your phone. My Ascend wouldn't let me delete any pre-loaded apps. My Esteem does. Am I safe to delete everything on that list?

Just an update: My phone just restarted while I was changing the wallpaper and now it gets stuck at the metro screen and shuts off (or just the screen) and I'm stuck here. Now before I say wether or not this was due to freezing these apps or not I think its safer to assume it was. So just be careful while freezing/deleting. I'll report back once and if I have isolated the problem.

Hey just wanted to let you guys know I've had an issue arise in mine that has forced me to do a factory restore TWICE. However it doesn't seem to be linked to the freezing of apps.
From stock version I rooted, did a manual update to FW ..ZVB then had to reroot. After this I froze a bunch of apps using TBP, changed the system font. Restarted several times and everything was fine.
Then something happened while changing wallpapers where it restarted by itself and once it booted it semi-froze on the lock screen where I could see and receive texts and notifications but touch screen was unresponsive (really weird). Restored to factory settings and everything was back the way it was including all the apps, EXCEPT the font and Superuser.
So this time I left it as is and while recharging one morning I took the phone off the charger and the same thing happened again. Had to do another restore and this time I manually set everything I could back to stock. The exception being Superuser.
Anyway like I said, it seems this has nothing to do freezing the apps mentioned above and you could probably still use this list. Hope this helps some.

Default MetroBLOAT replacer?

Any chance someone could put together the files and a script of the commonly removed bloatware from MetroPCS and a script that would put all the files back where they originally would be?

A few items now that I have removed I have tried downloading again from the MetroApps store and when I try to launch them I get force closes each and every time.

I'm thinking this may be useful to more than myself :-)

Items I've removed that I know for sure I want back:

MetroMail
Metro IM Client (not sure the actual name of it)
Rhapsody
EasyWifi
Loopt

This may not be everything - I only removed those items that I was 100% sure was bloated in by Metro... I DON'T WANT THAT STINKING XTRAs APP BACK!

Good Idea, I agree. I think some things I removed may be causing my phone to function differently. I too DON'T WANT THAT STINKING XTRA APP BACK! That has to be the worst bloat ever!

YAY! finalturismo heard our plea and is working on this! http://androidforums.com/esteem-all-things-root/435963-stock-android-2-3-4-apps-here-new-post.html

Here's still needing the Metro Apps to put back in though - if anyone has them, swing over to the other thread and let him know!

Well, Easy Wi-Fi is not bloatware -- it's a very useful app, but you can remove it if you want.

Oh, wait, you want it back so maybe you realize it wasn't bloatware...

I will have it done by tonight.

the batch file will be able to push stock metro apps back to the system apps folder on rooted AND un rooted phones.

For some reason titanium back up does not backup / restore apps correctly under CERTAIN conditions.

It happened to me, i tried to restore my apps and it would freeze on the restore process.

This happened because i was rooting, unrooting and doing hard resets on my phone during testing.

Question Is it safe to delete Polaris Office?

Just Downloaded quickoffice today from Amazon appstore.
It was the free app of the day.

Wondering if it's safe to remove Polaris Office? If I had Titanium I'd back it up first just in case. I haven't reinstalled titanium yet because I ordered an sd card that's on it's way for my backyups.

Wondering if it's safe to remove Polaris Office? If I had Titanium I'd back it up first just in case. I haven't reinstalled titanium yet because I ordered an sd card that's on it's way for my backyups.

Yes it is safe to remove it

Question While I'm at it is Metroweb safe to remove?

On my ascend Titanium had to do a Nand trick to remove it.

There should be a guide with safe to remove apps for the lg-esteem.

If I did remove metroweb would I have to convert another browser to a system app? Or Could I just remove metro web and use another browser that isn't a system app?

What about removing metro studio?

Metrostudio can be removed.

Metroweb has had some conflicting reports with removal, do so at your own risk. If you do decide to remove it i suggest adding another browser to the system apps folder before removing metroweb just to be safe.

I got hit with FC after FC after FC when I uninstalled MyMetro and had to pull the battery.

Also just a tip, if you rename the apks, which is what I did instead of deleting them, it unistalls them

I only froze all the Metro bloatware instead of removing (until we have a recovery) and one thing that I notice is when I run a list of running apps in Elixir, it shows MyMetro running?!? dunno how it does it, I reboot, and its there again, not cached, but showing it running in the foreground with about 8-9mb in use. Dunno.

UPDATE:

Ok so after purchasing Kanaida's Esteem Optimizer app I show the following bloatware has been removed:

Finance, Loopt, M Studio, Mail@metro, Metro Navigator, Metropcs Easy Wifi, Metro411, Myextras, News, Pocket Express, Twitter

After searching the forums and looking through the LG Optimus bloatware post, I also removed:

Appstore, Astro, Car Home, Deskhome, Guided Tours, IM and Social, Metro Backup, Rhapsody, Virtual card

I am still not sure about In Touch, Mymetro and Swype. Since some of you guys were having FC issues after removing MyMetro, I am still not sure if just rebooting fixed that issue?? Elixir shows this running in foreground with about 16mb or ram in use. What about In Touch, is that ok to remove? Since I do not use Swype, that should be ok to remove right? Cuurently I have all of these frozen in Titanium Backup.

Also what about Mobilecare (com.innopath.activecare)? Elixir shows this running and using upto 18mb of ram in the background, but it does not show up in 'Running applications' or even in Go launchers running app list. I think I read somewhere on the interwebs that it allows for updates, so not sure if messing with that would kill my FOTA updates or not.

If and when you delete an apk, and immediately end up with a bunch of FC's... it's simply because that app was running in the background (loaded in RAM) and now it's still trying to run... the process is still in memory but you've deleted everything else. Now, if after you've deleted an app and after a reboot you still get FC's... then that was probably something you should have kept!

I'd imagine this applies to freezing apps too. I don't know because I don't freeze apps... I'm one of the crazy folks that takes a new phone out of the box, runs the root exploit on it, and then I take out all the apk's I know are safe to remove (that hateful MyXtra's app called MobilePosse, Facebook for LG, etc) and then come back with Root Explorer and backup the ones I ain't sure of before I delete them.

Don't remove that one. It's basically a set of debug screens to test and change various things, like different vocoder codecs (don't change this from 8K EVRC unless you don't want to make any calls and be forced to reboot), sensors etc... It's not too interesting, but If you have to return your phone that's one of the first tools they use, and if it's missing you don't want them giving you a hassle about returning it.

Question What about this?

In Titanium Pro this shows as orphan data...com.lge.ers. There is no back up for it even though I immediately. backed up everything right after rooting the phone. Does anyone know what this is?
