Default Help Un-rooting and Factory Reset LG Esteem

Hi,
I'm having a lot of issues with my LG esteem (unresponsive, won't finish scanning media files, unable to load status bar, malfunctioning stock Messaging App and Handcent and constant freezing). This happened after I rooted my phone (the only thing I've done with root is removing the Metro start up sound.) To potentially fix this, I wanted to Factory reset my phone and start from scratch again. However, I did hear that you can destroy your phone by not successfully un-rooting your phone first hand. I've read a few forums on how to do so, but to be honest I'm not tech-savvy so I was hoping to get a very general break down of how or what I should be doing to get my phone back to working smoothly. If there are suggestions for how to do this other than having to un-root and factory reset, I'm down to hear them!
Thanks!

Hmmm, I'm not sure if I installed either -- or at least, I don't remember picking one or seeing one mentioned. This was the root that I used for the phone:

Ok...just rooted one yesterday that way..give me an of what you would rather do and put it together.
First though go to your apps find superuser and update it.
Second download ROM Manager from the market..open it and at the top choose install recovery.
Think if you want to stay on stock ROM..or more customized...theme it a little(diff icons & colors)..entirely up to you

I think for now I'll stick with stock, that way if there's still an issue I can take it to metro.

I could revert mine as well at anytime(could never take back to the closest Metro Corp though-they know me)

Did these?

By "install recovery" do you mean "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery"?

Superuser was already up-to-date, but I updated it anyway. I also just finished backing up the ROM.

Just below in the pic above it says 'Fix Permissions" run that then try to recreate the issue(s) you were having in the OP

The main problem that I've been having with the phone is that my messaging Apps will suddenly stop working. I've gone through the stock app, handcent, and currently go sms. Wondering if I should un-root and take into Metro?

Have you tried deleting all text messages? Just read that this was a fix for a similar issue on a different Android device.

EDIT: Might have what is called "rogue sms", which is like a virus sent through text messages. I have read that many devices had this problem and what they did is delete every last message that is in your phone. Honestly, MetroPCS is going to do a factory reset, i can almost promise that. The problem has nothing to do with root i dont think since others with this problem dont even know what Root is LOL.

Definitely try deleting all your messages before making drastic changes like that (Rather lose my messages than all my data).

Or use ROM Manager to Fix Permissions...

Hope this helps.

Ok..you have made a backup in recovery
Fixed permissions
Want to stay on stock
Lets give this a try..delete(uninstall) all of your messaging apps...reboot..then download this right to your phone:
Stock messaging app

Reboot and try it out.

I've uninstalled Handcent and Go SMS Pro, but I can't find how to uninstall
the stock messaging app. I've mostly read on other forums that you can
block it from appearing on the phone through root but not actually uninstall.
The other suggestion I've read was to use Titanium Backup to delete it.
Which should I use (if any)?
Thanks!

you can freeze the stock sms app using titu, or you can use rom tool box pro to remove it also.

Hey- I was looking for a solution to something similar. My lg got squirrely after updating an ad block program. Granted, it was lagging on touch commands for the last week, but the ad block app was its undoing. I did what you said- every thing is great now. Deleted txt mssgs, backed up personal info, ran the rom permissions (lots of stuff on the screen for a few min) then did the recovery. THANKS for your posts where us old guys can still learn a trick or two!
