Default Is there a 1000mA USB car charger that actually works?

I tried the 1000 mA bullet chargers and micro USB cable from Monoprice and got the same results as everyone else the phone will not charge when on. The cable is fine as it works with my stock wall charger.

So my question is, has anyone out there found a USB car charger/adaptor that will actually charge the EVO when the EVO is on? I prefer the seperate charger/cable option as it gives more flexibility.

Or are we doomed to a car charger with the cable actually hard wired into the charger?

BTW I had the RocketFish charger from BB but returned it because it was only 700mA and I want one that is 1000mA.

I bought this one: DealExtreme: $2.63 1000mA Car Cigarette Powered USB Adapter/Charger (DC 12V/24V) It also comes in white.

It definitely charges the EVO but I can't confirm it does it at 1A. The phone still says usb charging when looking at the battery status. I haven't timed it to see if it charges at the same rate as the wall charger.

I don't know the specs or output on it, but when I bought my EVO from Radio shack, I also bought the PointMobl (That's an L, not an i) Micro USB car charger. Check it out here:

PointMobl Micro USB Vehicle Power Adapter : Cell Phone Car Chargers | RadioShack.com

Not only does it have the micro USB plug thatworks with the EVO (has no problem keeping up with leaving the EVO on and charging), but it also has a built in USB port. It promotes as being able to charge two devices at once.

It may not be "dealextreme" cheap at $24.99, but it certainly does work.

Generally the bigger they are the faster they charge. Try the ones from Target (can't remember the brand name but I think they only carry one brand). I have brought a Nokia charger from them and that thing charges quick. Blows away any of the Ebay and some el cheapo brand car chargers I bought. You can always return if it doesn't work out.

Using this right now and loving the low profile, I just tuck the MicroUSB cable away when not in use. I bought this specifically for the 1A charge capabilities and it lives up to expectations.

The Palm Pre car charger (model 3453WW) works very well. The phone reports AC charging, and I can confirm that it charges while running Pandora and Google Nav.
Radioshack has them on clearance right now for $10.

I use the car charger that I bought for my Lotus (from the Sprint store). When I'm on the road I use a 12V wall adapter. It works fine.

I have found that it charges better when it's powered off, though.

Gomadic dual home and car chargers for me. With a set of tips, I can keep two Evo's juiced whenever I need. Both are 1A output from each individual output with 2A total when both are plugged in and 1A when only 1 plugged in. Pricey, but lifetime warranty. Pretty sure they're made in USA too.

This looks promising, have you actually tested this with the EVO? How is the quality of the charger?

Thanks

I just ordered one and should get it Monday, I'll post back with my results running both ports once I get it. I don't have a second device that uses as much power, but maybe I'll try plugging in a USB powered hard drive to the other port to test a higher load than my zune or kindle

Also to clarify, the "revive" model is 1 amp per port and the one I ordered at $11.40. The "revive II" is on preorder for $24.99 and has a 2.1 amp port and a 1 amp port.

I bought the Griffin Powerjolt dual, but I haven't tried it yet. It's ~$12 or so on amazon or at wallyworld.

Less power, but my BB 9700 charger works great on the evo.

I bought the griffin powerjolt and dual wall charger too. Just got them yesterday so I'll let u know how the work. The manual does state that its only 500ma per port so it would've been niceto know that prior to ordering. If the scoshe does do 1000ma per port then the griffin charger will be given to my dad for fathers day. Haha

I have the Griffin PJ and DC. They show as charging, but it took much longer than my Apple 5V/1A or the charger provided with the phone. I would only use it in a pinch.

Ya, I figured they'd be slower since the OEM charger is rated at 1000ma. I should have dine more research prior to ordering. The scoshe one is next on the list. My commute is only 7 miles so it makes sense for me to have a quick charger if I was ever in a pinch. I also need dual ports to charge the work phone at the same time if I had to.

i tried the one from monoprice and it doesn't work with the evo. the palm pre carcharger does work, and then i have an ebay one that also works. the monoprice car usb thing says 1000ma. the ebay one says 500ma. i was under the impression that the evo needed 1000ma, but i guess not. i'm using the 1000ma charger for the iphone, and the 500ma charger for the evo. i got the cable from monoprice as well. unfortunately, they ran out of the regular micro usb cable, so i had to get the one with the ferrite cores.

Yep. When I plug it in using the monoprice 1ft Micro USB cable, the orange light turns on for a few seconds then turns off. It's rejecting the charge.

I originally bought this charger to charge my iPad. It can charging both ipad and the evo without any problems. Theres more than enough power with 2A to keep both juiced. I dont see any devices that really uses 2.1A to charge yet, so not sure how the revive II version will benefit over the original. Maybe faster charge??

So the evo seems to be able to run on less than 1000ma charge? I was under the impression thats why two of the multichargers I had from past phones weren't working. I'm getting the vibe the cables can be a problem too? I got lucky and found an old verizon charger of my dads (idk what it went to) and it's working in my car. Fishy stuff.

As far as power goes, if you want to navigate and pandora etc, and still charge up the phone, you should have a 1000ma charger. I have a 500ma charger that does charge, but only if I am not doing a bunch of stuff with the phone. think of blowing up a balloon that has a hole in the other end. faster air leaks out, the faster you have to blow it back in.

I have no idea on the cables though. I guess there could be cables that are wired right and others that arent?

Go the Gomadic dual charger for wall and a dual charger for car. Both put out 1A per output. Both charge quickly and completely and I retired the OEM charger. Lifetime warranty. They are not discount products, and are come from a US company in VA. Like them a lot. They do use cable tip system so I'm going to retire most of my other chargers since having these pretty much retires them anyway.

Received my $3 RocketFish charger today, it's rated 600mA. What exactly does this mean? If I'm using GPS with it plugged in, it won't charge?

Son of a bitch, it has the standard USB plug instead of Micro USB. Looks like I have to buy another one anyways.

Yes all palm chargers work with the Evo flawlessly. They are designed to a higher amperage than most chargers in order to power the inductive charging mechanism of the Palm touchstone. Plus, they are sleek use high quality materials. The palm car charer Is extremely compact yet powerful. $10 is a heck of a deal.

I just received 2 of these yesterday from Amazon. I did a test and turned everything on (Wi-fi, bluetooth, GPS and Pandora) and was pleased to see that even with everything running, the battery still charged. I am using the USB cables that I ordered from Monoprice. Thanks for suggesting these

This is what I've been using.

For only $1.46 each when QTY 50+ purchased - Motorola V8, V9 Series Car Charger for RAZR2 | Motorola

Also used it for my palm pre. The 600ma part doesn't bother me. Been able to run pandora in the car and charge at the same time.

Oh and it's $1.78

This is what I got months ago, and it works fine for my EVO. Ordered several!
can anyone confirm if these have a replaceable fuse in them? I have a similar charger and it has a fuse that kinda acts as a surge protector for whatever device I'm charging... I want to order a few of these, but I don't wanna cook my Evo if I have a unexpected power spike...

i bought the one from the Sprint Store when i first got my Bold 9650 as I was going to be using GPS nav for 6 hours and was pretty sure i wouldn't last a full charge the whole way.

It works with the wifes Samsung Moment and charges the Evo just fine.

I just feel like a sucker since i paid $30 for it...lol

So has anyone tested the Evo on a USB port putting out 2.1amps?
Like some of the iPad chargers.

I'd like to know if it works ok...

I used this one. But not 1000 mah. I also wonder why it should be 1000mash because just the speed is a bit slower.

Also to clarify, the "revive" model is 1 amp per port and the one I ordered at $11.40. The "revive II" is on preorder for $24.99 and has a 2.1 amp port and a 1 amp port.

Scosche Revive

Scosche Revive II
Sorry, I meant to post back with my results with the Scosche Revive earlier.

First off, there is some confusion since Scosche has at least 3 different dual-USB chargers. The one I bought is the "Revive" model # USB12V2A, which is 1 Amp per port for a total potential 2 Amp capacity across two devices. (Currently $12.21, I paid $11.40, I have Amazon Prime so not sure what regular shipping is.)

The adapter is built well, not the most solid construction I have seen in a car outlet plug, however definitely above average and I have no concerns about its durability. When power is on, it has a blue LED indicator, which I don't care for that much ... when I leave for work it is still dark out, and I have to have it rotated to where LED is pointing down since the blue LED is too bright and distracting, however during the day then I can't see it. My car socket is a bit loose, so sometimes between morning and afternoon the plug may loose contact (This is a fault with my car, not the adapter, and I should probably get around to fixing this! ) but if it wasn't for that, I wouldn't really care about the brighter blue LED. I may just go over it with a black marker though, and see if I can get the brightness down. The main issue for me (due to my car socket) is it can be fine in the morning when it is 72 degrees, but when I leave work and it's 95 degrees out and much hotter in the car, the expansion/contraction of my socket can cause it to lose contact and I have the LED turned where I can't see it anymore in the sunlight. (And while typing this, I put a note to myself to finally get around to getting a replacement socket for the car, so hopefully this won't be an issue at all soon anyway.)

When in use, it has no problems charging the EVO while running GPS and 4G, running turn-by-turn navigation, etc, with another device using the second port. I plugged my old phone on the second port for a bit (which still doesn't use as much power as the EVO) then mostly had my Zune connected (which uses even less) so I still can't verify how well it performs with two high power devices, but with the EVO and an average device, it does great. There are no problems with the adapter getting hot.

Overall, this charger seems to handle the power requirements of the EVO just fine, and I don't know if there is any advantage compared to the more expensive (and on-preorder) iPad version with the 2.1 Amp port given the price difference.
