This sounds vaguely familiar to a Sprint bill I received 9 years ago. Sprint attributed a six gig data charge to a phantom video attachment to a phantom e-mail I never received. They dropped the charge and promised never to try that again.
First of all, how could u not know it was coming? I know I'm a bit late but there are TONS of international calling options for android users now. I use a website call YouTelo that turns an int'l number into a local one that I can store and dial from my contact list. Super easy and super cheap. I spend about $20 a month with the site but I make huge amounts of int'l calls, mostly to the U.K. There's also one called rebtel and one called comfi too, but i found youtelo.com to be the best by far. Anyway, I hope the phone bill thing worked out in the end. Ouch! Here's the site if you want to give it a try. http://YouTelo.com

Why didn't she turn the airplane mode on, and then use wifi? There are a lot of places with wifi in Mexico, and she could have avoided international roaming charges.
Hopefully this is a lesson on stupidity and how to avoid it in the future. When I go on cruises to Mexico, my phone is always in airplane mode. I don't consider checking Facebook to be a mandatory task when on vacation, and I use wifi if needed.
Yeah its hard to feel bad for her. The data amount seems WAY high but even in normal use the phone is constantly hitting data so you need to disable it when traveling internationally.

granted international roaming data is a bad idea, but 5 gigs? No way! I check mine frequently because i use a vzw prl and try to be nice and i get like 2g a month. No way you amass 5 gigs in a week...?

I've been roaming a lot lately, so I checked the MIUI monitor app (which I think counts data twice if you are tethering or wifi hotspot but...)
and I got up to nearly half a gig this week, and it was really only over the course of a few days... I guess it would be possible, but come on... your in another country for a vacation! Put yer phone down!

And why did you think it was a good idea to bring this thread back from the dead?
