Default tethering w/ ubuntu?

I have an htc evo I got on June 20th. I've never accepted any of the updates. The phone isn't rooted. I'm using Ubuntu 10.04.

How do I use my phone to connect my linux laptop or pc to the internet? I'm looking for the simplest way that doesn't require more fees. Inspite of being a linux user I'm not exceptionally savvy so a step by step would help me out a lot.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Do this:

Simple Root Unlocks HTC Evo 4G in One Click

Then go to the market and download "wireless tether".

Done!

What are you scared of clicking a few buttons? Its no big deal. If you dont want to do it then pay Sprint.

Actually now that I think about it my real issue is backing up everything in the phone. There's so much I'm afraid to lose and as far as I know there is no simple way to backup the drive and sd card in one or two shots.

mybackup works without root use that to back evverything up then root after just restore with that program.

then get titanium backup after root and don't forget BACK THAT NAND UP!
and thats it now if you followed all the steps to your root method right you are sitting at a baseline you can always come back too.

Flash roms and find what works for you when you are happy NAND backup again.

Default easy tether with Ubuntu 10

Get easy tether from the Android market. Works great for me.

You will need to download some files for ubuntu first. Search these forums for complete install and start up instructions .

this will show you how to connect using 2 terminal windows.

Well in case anyone else tries looking for this information, I've managed to tether my ubuntu laptop (10.04) with the evo by using easy tether. Its fairly straight forward and the app contains all the directions you need to succeed. If it doesn't work for you try selecting help from the menu and you should be fine. Otherwise pm me and I'll try to help. No expert but sometimes it doesn't take one.
