I mainly love my Evo just the way it is, with only 1 drawback. I hate having to reconnect each time i unplug my phn from my laptop at work using easytether or pdanet. So like many others, i want wireless tethering w/o a $30 monthly fee. I've been reading up on root posts (mainly unrevoked), and have noticed it mentioned that some ROM's have a "wireless tether" or "hotspot" built in. What's the difference in the two, arent they the same? I see "Wireless Tether" in the market for root users, isn't that the same as the "hotspot" feature or am i missing something? It'd be pretty nifty to utilize my phn as a hotspot for 2-3 others in my office to connect to when needed as well.

I don't really care to flash a custom ROM, as i'm content in the configuration i already have, but i would like to get rid of the bloatware and have it "frozen" so to speak. Does this have any improvement on battery life? I typically get about 15+/- hrs a day as is before i have to charge back up, and don't want to chance ruining that by trying a custom kernel/ROM that may/may not tweak the battery life. I've read too many mixed reviews to feel it's justified, so i mainly want to kill off "zone", "stocks", "navigation", "people", etc etc that run without me needing it. Does it help battery life to only freeze the bloatware with Titanium Backup and then just redo my current launcher pro screens/settings?

sounds like rooting and installing wireless tether would be a great option. i removed most of the bloatware and have seen little difference in battery life by that one step. the majority of the difference appears to come from using setpc to underclock the processor

SWEET. Rooted with unrevoked 3 last night (cakewalk by the way), and installed the Wireless Tether app from the market. Of course, i've been troubleshooting connection issues all morning, but finally just installed the 2.0.5 pre9 apk and VOILA', tethering like a champ Haven't tried the encryption with it yet, just tested on this Ubuntu craptop, Windows laptop, and my coworkers iPhone and it's working great, with Access Control enabled as well.

Now on to figure out SetCPU and optimize battery life and performance, thanks again!

You may consider a different ROM now, I have used and like several, right now i'm using Myns warm twopointtwo RLS3 and really like it, I also enjoyed virusrom. I know that Myns RLS2 and RLS3 have the hotspot unlocked to use free. I like using hotspot because any of the widgets can activate it without my having to go into the app to start. Personally I like the hotspot app over wireless tether. However, I do have both on my phone.

Aside from ease of use (widgets), do you notice any difference between the hotspot feature and wireless tether? I debated on trying out Myn's RLS3 ROM but some of the reviews seemed mixed as far as which kernel helps/hurts things most. I just don't wanna chance having to play a kernel game to get back up to par

Go figure, now that i'm rooted it's gotten the best of me and i'm itching to try out a new ROM LOL I did a backup with ROM Manager right after rooting with everything bone stock (data reset performed prior to root), and just did another to save my configurations/screen setups the way i have them now. So if i go ahead and flash Myn's newest ROM and decide it's not for me, i can reinstall ROM Manager via Appbrain and still restore things back to the EXACT way they are now, correct? I'm pretty sure that's how it works, but before i pull the trigger i just wanna confirmation.

I ghost drives/create images all the time here at work and am pretty familiar with imaging, just want to make sure that's basically what ROM Manager is doing (contacts, apps, email configs, etc).

Wireless tether is awesome btw, my HR manager and the safety chick both use my network for their iPhones now LOL

Silly me! I assumed that with wireless tether, you could only connect to one device at a time but gathering from this thread, I guess that may not be the case. To how many devices can you give wifi simultaneously? Thanks!

Sprint hotspot:

-up to 8 connections
-uses infrastructure, I believe
-works fine with 3g/4g if you pay for it, but limited to 3g if you are rooted and go around security

Android wifi tether

-I think it was limited to 2 connections at one point, and may still be the case. I can't find specific info on it, and don't have enough devices to test it with atm.
-uses ad-hoc, so you can only connect with devices that support that
-works with 3g/4g

That was all that I was able to do it with....all reporting good performance!

Some ROMs have Sprint Hotspot unlocked...although I don't think 4G works with the unlocked Hotspot for some reason.

Yep, it seems that's the case. I just use android wifi tether when I need 4g speeds.

I might be mistaken, but I think that Wireless Tether (at least version 2.0.5 that I got along with the Vael Pak custom Rom) supports infrastructure rather than adhoc connections unlike "Barnacle Wifi Tether which supports on ad hoc connections.

I followed in your foot steps with respect to going to Myn’s Warm TwoPointTwo - [RLS 4 - 11/25/2010]. I have had it since the wee hours of yesterday morning. I love it! It is so snappy.... no need to overclock for me! I also seem to be getting not only better 4G speeds in 3 bar strength areas (compared to Vael Pak and BeliEVO maxing: at 10+ mbps instead of 5-6mbps) but better 4G signal (going from no signal to fair to poor sig in weak signal areas like my house LOL). I like Wireless Tether because it does not shut down my 4G (as mobile hotspot does) but mobile hotspot is great in 3G only areas.
