Talking -----F.A.Q.s-----

Updated: 12-24-2010

Hey everyone!! I just wanted to post some F.A.Q.’s. Its sometimes hard to find the simplest answers so I thought maybe a FAQ would help out some users find their answers a little easier… If anyone has anything else to add or something I overlooked or I gave wrong information, please feel free to contribute! This will always be a work in progress. I will defiantly be adding more, I just thought I would hit the big ones right now.

[MOST POPULAR]
------------------------------
Q: When is Unrevoked going to release an updated version for hboot 2.02/2.10?
A: No idea. It will be released one of these days. If you want to be in the loop, follow their twitter unrevoked dev team (unrevoked) on Twitter
------------------------------
Q: Where can I find ROMs and Kernels?
A: XDA development section – EVO 4G Android Development - xda-developers
XDA ROM WIKI – HTC Supersonic/ROMs
^^Not always up to date.^^

[Rooting]
Q: What is rooting?
A: Rooting gives you permission to access and write to all portions of the system. Meaning it gives you access to flash custom roms/kernels/themes etc. Rooting is also referred to as super user access (SU).
------------------------------
Q: How do I root my phone?
A: Matlock’s guide has been proven to be helpful and is very thorough.
------------------------------
Q: Should I accept an OTA while rooted?
A: You can; however, it would be wise not to. Just flash a new rom based off of the updated software.
------------------------------
Q: What is S-ON and S-OFF?
A: S-ON= Security ON, S-OFF= Security OFF. S-ON is stock. S=OFF unlocks nand access, which gives you full root access.
------------------------------
Q: Is hboot 2.02 or 2.10 rootable?
A: Yes, but not via Unrevoked. There is a manual method that can be found at XDA. The process is lengthy but will get you rooted. If you do decide to follow that method, just be sure you read it and fully understand what you are doing.

[ROMs]
Q: What is a ROM?
A: ROM - Read Only Memory. A ROM is the operating system (OS). It includes everything that the phone needs in order to work (drivers, kernel, software). With custom ROM, developers make adjustments either by tweaking it to make it faster or by changing the user interface (UI). For instance, Myns twopionttwo is a perfect example. He has not only made the ROM faster, he has added transitions between screens and made changes to the UI.
--------------
Q: What is the difference between Odex and Deodex?
A: Simple answer… Odex and Deodex ROMs will look exactly the same, the difference is in how the applications (.apk) are compiled. In theory the advantage of an Odex ROM is it will run faster. The advantages of Deodex ROMs are that they are needed when you want to modify the ROM or add a theme on top of the ROM.
If you would like a more indeapth reading check the following link out courtesy of akazabam.
What Is Odex And Deodex In Android [Complete Guide]

[KERNELS]
Q: Are kernels included in ROM’s?
A: Yes. All ROMS have kernels included.
------------------------------
Q: What is a kernel?
A: Complex answer… The kernel is the central component of the OS, it is a bridge between applications and the actual data processing done at the hardware level. Not so complex answer… Think of the kernel as the middle man between the phones hardware and the ROM.
------------------------------
Q: What is BFS vs. CFS?
A: BFS – Brain **** Scheduler
CFS – Completely Fair Scheduler
This is a pretty complicated subject to say the least. Pretty much they say BFS has better performance and CFS is more stable. Every phone handles kernels differently. I suggest you try multiple kernels and see what your phone likes the best.
------------------------------
Q: Whats the best kernel for me?
A: Everybody's phone handles kernels differently. For instance, some users have great success using kernels with aggressive HAVS, and some don't. For me, if I flash an aggressive kernel, my phone reboots every few minutes.
------------------------------
Q: What is HAVS?
A: HAVS - Hybrid Adaptive Voltage Scaling. HAVS adjusts the voltage going to the cpu based on frequencies and temperature changes. This can dramatically increase the battery life.

[RECOVERY]
Q: What is a recovery image?
A: A recovery image is what is needed in order to flash a rom/kernel/theme/etc. It gives you the ability to wipe data/cache/dalvik/battery stats, create partitions on your sd card, make and restore nandroid back-ups.
------------------------------
Q: What is the difference between ClockworkMod Recovery and Amon RA Recovery?
A: They both essentially do the same thing. The only difference between the two is UI and Amon RA backs-up your wimax.img where as clockwork does not.
------------------------------
Q: How do I access recovery?
A: Power the phone off. Power the phone back on holding the volume down button and power button at the same time. That will load hboot. Then use the volume keys to navigate and use the power button to select recovery.
------------------------------
Q: What tis the difference between hboot and recovery?
A: Hboot: AKA bootloader, is the initial screen (white screen with little green androids on skateboards) when you manually boot holding the power button and volume down key. Hboot gives you various options including access to fastboot, recovery, clear storage and simlock.

Recovery: It is used to flash roms/kernels/themes, and with that it gives you other various options as well, including the ability to wipe (data, cache, dalvik, battery stats etc.), create partitions to your SD card and enable usb mass storage. You have two options with your recovery, either Clockwork Mod or Amon RA. Regardless of the recovery, it is a black screen with green writing.

------------------------------
Q: What is a nandroid back-up?
A: A nandroid back-up (nand, nand back-up) is a complete system image. It will back everything up as is. So if I make a nand right now and I restore it later, everything will reappear as is. Even text messages and voicemails.
------------------------------
Q: Are nandroid back-ups compatible from Clockwork to Amon or vice versa?
A: No. They both save the system image differently. You can run into some serious problems restoring nands from different recoveries.
------------------------------
Q: I'm stuck in bootloop... What do I do?
A: Generally bootloop is not a big deal, you can recover form it! So if this happens, its most likely because your phone is not liking what you just flashed. Now to fix it. First things first, pull the battery. Now boot into recovery. Once you are in recovery you have a couple of options: You can try to clear cache and dalvik, then reboot and see if it will boot. Or you can reflash what ever it was wiping data, cache and dalvik, then reboot. Or you can restore a nand back-up. I usually try and wipe cache and dalvik, that usually fixes my problem.

[MISC.]
Q: I am having problems connecting to my 4G, how do I check to make sure I still have my RSA keys?
A: Download terminal emulator from the market.
Type "su" (without quotes of course). Press enter.
Next type "grep RSA /dev/mtd/mtd0" then press enter.
It will then spit out something like this:
RSA-REQUEST
RSA-REPLY
RSA-REJECT
RSA-ACK
RSA-1024
RSA-REQUEST
RSA-REPLY
RSA-REJECT
RSA-ACK
RSA-1024
RSA
ReRSA
RSA requests
RSA replies
-----BEGIN RSA PRIVATE KEY-----
-----END RSA PRIVATE KEY-----

The above in bold is what you are looking for. If you do n't see that, then unfortunately your RSA keys are lost.

They do, by the time you have 50 comments on one page, and mutliple pages, its hard to read for some people.
Now on xda, forget it. That new kernel is up to 220 pages.. in one week lol

I think you should number the questions for easy reference. That way when someone is sent to this thread via a link, post #1, FAQ #x.

Great idea and great job with this post. I think I'll save this page and point people to this when they have questions.

You should include questions about radios, pri, prl, and other data/radio faqs.

ROM= Read Only Memory

Technically what we flash aren't ROM's, they're ROM images or firmwares. We flash them to the ROM.

Suggestions:

-Difference between governors
-Difference between odexed and deodexed (I know this is in the rooting for dummies thread, but I usually link people to sites like this: What Is Odex And Deodex In Android [Complete Guide])
-What's the difference between hboot and recovery (some people forget start with this simple explaination )

I'm sure I can think of some more later.

Thanks for that very simple explanation. I just took that term for what it was but always had a hard time calling it that because I knew it wasn't correct.

ALSO, wrap, you forgot one very very popular(most?) question.............
"I am rooted but I can't get my wireless tether to work???"

We have a thread for that almost every day....

With all the new (and perspective) rooters out there currently, I think this post needs to be moved back up the list. Thanks for the work wrapkgb.

Great work! Maybe add something about what AOSP and Sense ROMs are and the differences. How about something about under and overclocking?
