For the time being I would keep them. If for some reason something happens, you can flash a different recovery to be able to utilize the clockwork backups. After a few weeks, you could delete them if you want.
Hello, new user here. I've successfully rooted my HTC EVO 4G a while back. I would like to upgrade to SW ver. 3.70, but had some reserves doing so. I've read the entire 'ROOTING For Dummies' thread posted, and downloaded the RUU Supersonic files from XDA-Developers. So far, I can't get the update to run.
Anyway, I currently have ClockworkMod Recovery 3.0.0.5. My current software version is 3.26.651.6. Can I just download the 'Stock Recovery 3.70.651.1 (Added 01/18/2011)' posted by the OP and run the flash from HBOOT? Also, my HBOOT is 0.93.0000 and my RADIO is 2.15.00.07.28.

Are you trying to unrooted and update or are you just trying to get to updated software?
If you are wanting to stay rooted but upgrade to the newer radios and latest OTA version, Sprint Lover's would be the best bet to do it in one shot. Otherwise you would need to flash the radios and a rom based on the 3.70 release. It is not necessary to unroot or run an RUU to get the latest updates.

Thank you for the quick response, Xtremedays!! I was ONE-CLICK away from downloading the Sprint Lover ROM. Here is the reason why. When I was reading the 'ROOTING For Dummies'... I came across the following message:
Quote:
REASONS WHY NOT TO UPDATE HBOOT
Quote:
- Any NANDROID backups made before updating HBoot will be useless on a different HBoot version
- HBoot is typically upgraded for various debugging differences, etc., but a primary reason is to patch security exploits (i.e. THE WAY WE ROOT. Why would you want to upgrade to an HBoot designed to keep out root. Yes, each one gets root eventually, but I think my point stands.)
If for some reason you accepted on OTA update, it would update your hboot and thus make all of your nandroid backups on your previous hboot useless. It would also potentially unroot your phone and you would have to wait weeks possibly months for an updated root exploit to be found. The fact that you are rooted now would make an OTA update unlikely to successfully flash. Before the OTA updates come out there are always various roms out due to leaked version of the final OTA release so those that are rooted usually have the new software before the stock phones do.
If you intend to stay rooted, my suggestion would be:
1) Switch your recovery to either AmonRA 2.3(preferred) or Clockwork 2.6.0.1
2) Flash either Sprint Lover's as it includes the newest radios or flash a custom rom and the radios to bring you to current software and radio levels.
It is not necessary to unroot or accept OTA updates to make your phone current

do not be concerned about the latest hboot. this is a warning for any future OTA's which will have a new hboot. if you unroot to accept the ota you will have to wait for the devs to figure out a new exploit which could be a few weeks or more months.

wow that thread went on and on..... In the first part you guys were talking about posting all the info regarding recovory.img's and how to flash them.. I think it is a great idea cauzz I know you azbam helped me a lot through some threads I started and it wasn't till I chatted back and forth with you and ocncnbraz ( know I got his user name wrong but you probably know who I am talking about) that I finely started understanding everything... so if a noob ( like I still am)comes to "all things root" they have your brain (sorta speck) in plane english.... I wish I had been on this path after you posted all that you talked about posting in the begining.... thanks agin for your guys expertise and help..
when I was reading the thread you mentioned about the files not needed when you do a nandroid and mentioned partitioning your SD card...I was at the time doing a nandroid because I found out yesterday that clock work and amand ra are not compatible ( more info to include on your new sticky)( very important info I have been playing around with new alterations thinking I could always go back to the nandroid I did when I flashed my first rom). So I knew I needed to do a new nandroid being that I just switched 2 weeks ago from clockwork2.5 to Amond Ra....When it askes you the MB question what mega bite's should I select..... Finely got to my question

About to start work on a new section for ClockworkMod and Amon_RA Recoveries. A how-to for Recoveries.
Please please do this, or if it's already been done can you link us? Ive been using clockwork 2.6 and have never had any problems, but everyone recommends RA. I'd like to try it i just need a how to on how to use it.

You use it the same way as Clockwork Mod. The only real difference that I am aware of other than the wiping issues is that Amon RA does not back up everything by default. There are three things selected and you can choose the others based on what you need to back up. Got here: Clockwork/Amon RA PC36IMG Files and download the PC36IMG file for Amon RA 2.3. Follow the instructions there and you will be using it in no time. If you switch over, make sure to make a new backup after you flash it as the ones you have in CWM will not work in Amon.
ok so i got a new replacement evo. i ran unrevoked i got is your firmware to new. i followed the steps. i still dnt have root according to root checker and rom manager. i cant get to my recovery like a normal rooted phone. i cant do rly anything a rooted phone can do except i got into my clockwork mod recovery and flased 4.6 mik. everything is still saying i dnt have root. any ideas please!!!!????

Does hboot say you have s-off? You have a custom recovery then? Do you have a super user app? Go to terminal emulator and enter su should change from $ to #. If all the above is correct go to tb and hit problems and let it install busy box...

You were able to flash a different ROM, though? Okay, let's start with this:
1) Turn the phone off then turn it back on while pressing and holding volume down. Do you see S-ON or S-OFF?
2) You say you have Clockwork. Did you flash that yourself (you'd have to have gotten S-OFF at least) or did unrevoked get that far?
3) What ROM are you on now? Were you actually able to flash mikfroyo?
4) If yes to 3, you definitely have a rooted ROM, but just for the heck of it, install the terminal emulator from the market (if you don't already have it). Open it, and type "su" without quotes. The prompt will change from $ to # if you have superuser permissions in your ROM..
EDIT: evomattnc beat me to it, and remembered what I forgot - busybox

What does clockwork and amon-ra do? What is their purpose? I am going to root my EVO as soon as the new stock GB can be rooted. In the meantime, a friend of mine's EVO is still at FROYO and is rooted. We played around with flashing a ROM last night, had some issues but we've got some new things to try today. Is this something we need to include?

both cwm and amon ra are custom recoveries without them you will not be able to flash custom roms. they are sort of a mini os for your phone. depending on the version of clockwork mod you have will determine what you can flash. clockwork mod 3.0.0.5 uses a script called edify. most flashable .zips use a script called amend. there are two recoveries that can use both scripts and they are: clockwork mod 2.6 and amon ra 2.3. i highly recommend amon ra 2.3 as it tends to do a better job at wiping then cwm.
also i would recommend that you flash everything through recovery and not use rom manager as it tends to be buggy. it never really wipes very well creating a lot of issues for most people. get to know your recovery cause there maybe a time when you cant boot up and all you have is your recovery. knowing what to do from there may save your phone.
hope that helps.

Thanks this does help alot! So much to learn. My friend's EVO was already rooted by someone else, that's why I knew very little about the original process used to root her phone. But we did get cyanogenmod 7 and gapps flashed to it yesterday and it is awesome. She is using cwm 3.0.0.5 (which I've seen on this forum is required to flash cgm7). She is having a blast with her 'new phone' now. I can't wait to get mine rooted. Gotta wait for them to exploit the new hboot

ok i see now. i do not think that has been released yet. i have not seen any stock recovery out for the new ota's. i pretty sure that once we have root access that we will startsee those recoveries come out, but as of yet not that i have seen.
Thanks for the info. Without lighting up the forum with controversy, I use it to install the OTA update. I am at 4.22 with CWM installed and want to update to 4.24 using the OTA update.
The OTA 4.24 update will not install with CWM recovery, it will only install the the current correct stock recovery. After I install the OTA, I simply flash CWM again and install the lastest SU update. Works great, is simple for me and no I have never lost root.
I am aware of the other ways to update, but i am really picky about installing updates OTA which I have been doing it this way for the last three updates.
I wasnt aware that root acces was needed to get the recovery.img. I guess I will have to wait. Couldnt it be aquired by using rom manger on on the the rooted stock roms?

Hmm.. I've never heard of this method, but I know that people have lost root by updating to the latest OTA.
(There are stock roms (2.3)) that you can flash...)
Wouldn't you lose root in this process? I don't think that an exploit has been found in the latest version (the forum would have exploded with posts).

unfortunately the stock recovery and rom are completely different. we have the source code for the stock rom, but i have not seen anything for the stock recovery yet.
to be honest this gingerbread release is not really all that. there are some great roms that are coming out that are really amazing. there are some roms that have a combo of sense 2.1 and sense 3.0 (mikg, kings alliance, and synergy roms). we even have a few roms that are pure sense 3.0(virus's kingdom rom). that are fast, smooth, and amazing. not sure why you want to go about updating to gingerbread when we have all these amazing roms. but that is up to you.
anymore questions feel free to ask.

The stock rom is only a part of the OTA. There are radio updates and an hboot update. I would imagine that you could install the OTA with the recovery.img from the 3.70 release as the ones going from 2.2 to 2.3 would have that recovery anyway. JMO and it is your phone but it seems that you go to alot of unnecessary work and time to get something that you can download and flash in a matter of a couple of minutes.
I figured out how to extract the recovery from the stock OTA 4.22 ROM. I flashed it and then booted and installed the 4.24 ota update. I am now running 4.24 with CWM and SU
The reason I do this method is that I want to keep my rom stock without having to wipe settings and it has remained that way. This method allows me to update just as if I wasnt rooted. Beacuse I am rooted using Unrevoked I do not worry about losing root (S-OFF).
After I update I then flash CWM and the latest SU.
Unfortuneatly using the 3.70 rcovery with the 4.22 rom caused my phone not to boot (triangle screen). So for this method I must have the correct recovery.img.

Is there any other way to turn the S-OFF? I had a rooted EVO and the power button stopped working so I had to get a new one and UnrEVOked says that the firmware is too new so I can't root my phone using that. How do I get around this problem? If I could just go back to an older version of the firmware I wouldn't have any of these problems but I don't know if you can. Please help me out here somebody.

You can not currently root the new hboot(2.16) nor downgrade your software to allow you to root. Check this thread.

and welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
like x said you can't unfortunately root just yet. but the devs are hard at work on coming up with an exploit to make root possible. please read the link the x provided.
I am currently in the process of switching back and forth between Clockwork and Amon to restore and backup a few of my ROM's because I am switching from Clockwork to Amon and I want a few backups in case things go wrong.
Now, Clockwork backed up into the folder "clockworkmod" and that is what I backed up to my computer. It contained a folder "backup" and that is where the ROM's were written. I just need to make sure, is the folder "nandroid" the folder I need to backup to my computer?

the nandroid folder is where amon ra saves the backups in, so if you want to backup those nandroid backups to your computer, then yes that is it.

Just so you know, it is not necessary to switch back and forth to remake the backups. If you needed to go back to an old one, you can just flash the CWM recovery to access it. Most of my old backups are long gone other than a couple I made when I first rooted that have my wimax keys saved. If they are more than a couple weeks old, in my experience you will never go back to them anyway.

that is a good point that xtreme is saying. you can keep your nandroids in clockwork mod and when a need arises to use those nandroid then you can switch recoveries. but that is up to you.
I only did it for 2 backups. My first backup right after rooting and my backup of Azrael before I flashed the Synergy ROM. I ram Azrael for almost 4 months so it contained all of my phone numbers and texts I wanted to make sure I had.

Are all of your phone numbers set to your google account or your phone? If they are set to google, then they will be restored when you sign into your google account from your phone. SMS backup and restore works well for transferring texts between rom flashes.

I have them on my google account but I use MyBackupPro to restore my text messages, all logs, MMS, my phone's layout and a few .apk's that have been removed from the Market.
I just wanted to have my last daily for a backup in case Synergy starts acting up and I can go back to it quickly.

Understandable. You should be happy with Amon RA. I have never had an issue with it.

Thanks! I believe that is it. I am trying to help someone unroot so they can take the phone in....the problem is that all the methods available leave the user at 3.70....Sprint tech will most likely update her and she will not be able to root again.
I am trying to get her to current 4.24 with stock recovery and s-onin a manner that she can root after her visit to sprint.
The way she wants it done is proving to be difficult. I keep the eng bootloader for this exact reason but she wants it to look 100% legitimate soooooo
When I am done I will try and package it all together for others

make sure that you delete the "_RA_2.3" part of the title. do not add an extra zip to the name as windows hides extensions. also make sure that you are putting it on the root of the sd card that means not in any folder.
