Yup, I am the one and only. Apparently "Captain_Throwback" is too long a username for this forum.
So, how to do it - it's actually not that complicated. The key is the android_info.txt file in the PC36IMG.zip file. That determines the "Main Version" number, which, when you're S-ON, is the lowest ROM version that it'll let you install (either via RUU or through HBOOT). The key is to choose a low number. In the attached zip, I've used 1.00.000.0. There aren't any ROM version numbers that low, so you should be able to use any RUU or PC36IMG with a valid HTC signature to update the device once the NAND is re-locked (even Eclair, I believe).
I hex-edited a downgradable HBOOT version (0.97) to be 6.97, so it'll install & overwrite Revolutionary. It *may* lock your NAND (i.e. S-ON), and if it does, then you can just go ahead and run the latest Froyo RUU (3.70) and you'll be all set. If not, you'll need to run the unrevoked S-ON zip, which should re-lock the NAND. The catch is that your radio needs to be 2.15.00.11.19 or older. If you're running Froyo, that's no problem. If you happen to still be running Gingerbread, you're stuck running a Froyo RUU to downgrade it, and then you have to re-lock the NAND, and then re-run the RUU.
That's all!
Oh this seemed so hopeful for me, but I think I've really messed things up somehow. I've tried so many things to get this unrooted, but I was having a lot of issues with the bootloader recognizing the pc36img.zip when it was s-off but not when it was s-on.
Anyway I moved on from that. I'll try to break it down to what I've done latest.
I ran the 4.54 RUU to clean everything up. Then flashing the s-on pc36img didn't do anything. So I flashed Captain's modified 0.97 bootloader which seemed to take. So I thought I'd downgrade to 3.70 RUU so I could use the unrevoked s-on tool. But it wouldn't let me downgrade with the RUU.
Any thoughts on what to do next? Like I said I've tried a lot of things today. Been on it for about 6 hours now. So I might be leaving out something but any suggestions would help.

Right now I'm at...
HBOOT 6.17.001
radio 2.15.00.08.08
just ran the 4.54 RUU and revolutionary again to see if i could run the steps in this thread ROOTING For Dummies Guide.....the Gingerbread Edition. It's not giving me s-on. and when I try to flash the 2.15.11.19 radio through CWM it doesn't stick. Says it's successful but when I reboot it's back to the 08.08
oh and i used unrevoked originally a long time ago. but since then i've used revolutionary to flash cwm because i wasn't sure of another way to do that. even though i had s-off the whole time.

flashing older radios and having a new software version is not a good mix. you are currently on the latest radio. i would not mess with it.
the ruu will not give you s-on. you need to use the file in the second part of the unrooting section in the guide. that one will give you s-on. all the ruu will do is give you a stock rom and stock recovery.

I tried that one and when I reboot...still s-off. i'm sure i've mixed all kinds of things up but hopefully there is some way of getting it to work.
well does it do when you tried it? did you get an error?
It detects the PC36IMG.zip just fine. Then it runs without errors. But when I reboot into the bootloader it still says s-off. :/
This one really has me guessing. I might just have to put it away for tonight and try again when I haven't been going at it for so long. If you have any other ideas let me know. Thanks a lot for trying to figure it out with me. I appreciate any help I can get.

You definitely need to downgrade your radio to 2.15.00.11.19, so you can use the unrevoked S-ON zip. However, I believe ClockworkMod is your problem. Use Amon_RA's recovery. Then you shouldn't have any problems.

damn capt you are the man!!!!
that is probably the issue. i just saw revolutionary in the post and assumed that was how the phone was rooted. yeah if you rooted with unrevoked then yes you should downgrade the radio.
Hi!...new to the forum. I had rooted my EVO with revolutionary but never flashed a rom (kept it as stock htc sense) and I'm now in the process of unrooting. Is there a way without wiping all my data?
I've successfully turned S back "on" but don't know if I should continue flashing the RUU since I hear it will wipe everything. Thanks.

yes it will wipe data. there is not much you can do to avoid that. you can use my backup pro to back everything up. all you will have to do once you have backed it up and run the ruu, is to redownload MBP and select restore.

Ok I'll definitely try that! I kept trying to get back to 2.15.00.11.19 radio but it just wouldn't stick. The only way I know to flash recoveries is through ROM Manager. And since I've done all of this flashing I guess I'll have to reroot and all. Or would you suggest flashing Amon_Ra another way?

well here is amon ra with instructions from the dummies guide and it is not flashed through recovery:
you can get the recovery here:PC36IMG RA 2.3.zip
here are the instructions:
1.download the file.
2.rename the file by erasing the "_RA_2.3" part of the name so that it is only named PC36IMG. make sure not to add ".zip" to the name as windows hides extensions.
3.transfer the file to the root (that means not in any folder) of the sd card.
4.power off (you most likely need to uncheck fastboot. settings/apps/uncheck fastboot.) then press and hold power+vol down.
5.hboot should see the file and select yes to update.

Thanks I'm about to try this when I get a break from work! I'll post the update here.
sidenote: Has anyone had luck using the Android Flasher tool? I thought it could save me time in flashing all these radios and such without having to boot up to mount the sd card then get back to the bootloader...then repeat. (sorry not trying to hijack here just thought it was related)

I've used Android Flasher many times, and recommend it for flashing .img files.

I updated my post on how to unroot and the files used to do it, so you may want to take a look and make some updates. My changes should help fix anyone whose security doesn't turn on just by flashing the hex-edited HBOOT file.

Right now I'm really just attempting to unroot and regain S-On for the heck of it. Yesterday, I downgraded to 2.3.3, rooted via Revolutionary method and got S-Off with little problem. I don't have much experience with flashing or customizing with Android. I haven't encountered any issues after rooting, but I want to unroot to familiarize myself a little further.
I've downloaded all files included on this thread, including the Android Flasher. I installed the radio file through recovery, but my radio version didn't update. It's still showing that I'm running radio version: 1.09.01.0622 (HBOOT-6.13.1002). Recovery is saying that the radio install was completed successfully, but the radio version shows no change. I've gone through a few times, but with no change.
I've looked through the thread for anybody that had a similar issue, but I didn't see any. :/

STOP!!!!! this is for the evo 4g. do not try this. according to your sig and your hboot you have the incredible phone, correct? you have to be careful what you flash. hopefully nothing bad has been done to your phone.
Radio- 2.15.00.07.28
HBOOT 6.16.1002
S-Off - but do not have superuser
I'm trying to return phone due to the infamou EVO reboot loop issue... I started another unroot process but it failed and now I'm here because it seems like everyone has had it work.. the only problem is I cannot boot into recovery to flash the Radio file or the HBoot file...

this will atleast give you at least the new radios. but it will also install the stock recovery which you will not be able to use. if this works then you will still be rooted as you will have s-off still so all you will have to do is install a custom recovery and then either nandroid back to a previous rom or just flash a new one.
are you trying to unroot to get it fixed?

Help! Should I reroot?
You shouldn't need to get into recovery to unroot. If you start with step two of the process outlined in the OP, you should be fine. If your phone isn't S-ON after flashing the hex edited HBOOT, then you'll just have to flash a custom recovery so you can get S-ON. That's no biggie, though .

Yes I am trying to unroot to get it fixed... I still a little lost because I do not have a recovery... it just goes to the red triangle..
Take the sd card out of the phone, and connect it to a computer using a card reader, so you can copy over the necessary PC36IMG file(s). Then put it back into the device so you can flash the files in the bootloader.
P.S. The device with the red triangle is stock recovery. If you press both volume buttons and the power button at the same time while in there, the Menu options will appear (but there aren't many options).

next you need to use the PC36IMG hboot 6.17 you can use android flasher or from the bootloader. either way is up to you. just follow the guide step by step.

No, you're not ready to return it yet - you need to do the last step now, which is to flash the last PC36IMG to return it to stock.
