Default Nandroid/backup question

I am pretty new to the whole rooting stuff. Recently rooted and flashed with Salvage Mod and a Tiamat kernel. My question is I keep hearing about doing a Nandroid so that if you don't like a kernel or ROM you can easily go back. Does this mean go back to all the apps I had previously installed as well or just basically the O/S and kernel and then restore apps using AppBrain or Titanium Backup?

Is it possible to make some form of a Nandroid Backup that would restore all my apps that are installed along with the settings or is that just too much to hope for?

I am also running Amon-Ra as my recovery tool if that makes any difference.

Thanks,
-Eric

99.9% your nandroid will restore you to os and kernel only... in my experience tho, if you have partitioned your card and have used some sort of app2sd app, sometimes your apps will remain... i believe it depends on the rom... but in some cases, i have had to uninstall and install certain apps such as setcpu... your best bet, IMO, is to back up apps with tb... remember only to back up app and not data also... data from one rom to another can cause problems.... ie - force closures, etc...

Actually a nandroid is created in your Amon-ra recovery. Go to backup and restore, I think that's where It's at in Amon-ra. And check all that apply, then select backup. Once you do that you have a nandroid backup.
To restore all of your apps you need to use titanium backup to backup your apps prior to switching roms. Then once the new ROM is loaded find titanium on the market and redownload. Then restore the apps one by one. Choose app only until you know it doesn't mess with your ROM, then restore the data.

Edit: Douh! Rob beat me to it.

Rob is correct about the data. If you only backup non system apps you should be ok restoring the data. System apps, forget it. It'll corrupt yo piece.

nandroid backups are a complete snapshot of the current state of your rom. it saves all of your data including your settings and your apps and its data. nandroid backups are your friend. if you run into issues or problems flashing a rom you could always do a nandroid restore to your previous setup. that is why it is important to always do a nandroid backup before flashing anything. that way you can always go back if you need to.

titanium backup is a great way of backing all of your apps and its data. just make sure that you do not restore any system apps and its data. it will most likely contain bits and pieces of your previous rom and will conflict with your current rom.
