Default OK I got it.

Well, it was all java issue. for some reason Chrome was blocking java. I tried Firefox and voila. I am unlocked.

Unfortunately, it did factory reset! So all my apps and contacts etc are wiped out. No big problem. I can recover the contacts - already did with google sync. I can always get the apps back.

Thanks for the posts

Everything seems to be going well until I get to the cmd prompt and type in the get identifier command...instead of getting Identifier Token Start listing to copy it just says 'waiting for device'...any solutions?

is your phone set as charge only or do you have is as disk drive? make sure that it is charge only. also make sure nothing like pda net or anything that can communicate withe your phone. they might interrupt the process.

According to the directions at that point my phone should be plugged in and I'm at the fastboot menu and it doesn't have an option for the type of connection. When I plug it in though windows tries to look for the driver for the phone...could that be the hang up? (the options say that the device will not function correctly without the driver 1.0)...how do get around this?

HELP!! PLEASE???

I think I just bricked my wives phone. I had followed the instructions set forth in this thread to root her phone. I had successfully made it to the point of using Android Flash so that I could use Amon Ra and one of the kids grabbed her phone off of the computer. It had not completed the flash, and now it will not boot up at all. I was S-off and not watermarked, if that helps. Thanks in advance for any help.

When I last post I could not get ANYTHING to boot. Nothing at all. I got the screen with the phone and a RED triangle. So I let it sit while I went out for a ride to relax from the frustration. Now the phone will load normal and I can get to the hboot screen. So I am going to go back through the directions (since the issue was kids and operator error) and start over.

This is what I got after attempting via method #1. Not Android Flash
C:\android>fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
sending 'recovery' (3544 KB)...
OKAY [ 1.078s]
writing 'recovery'...
FAILED (remote: not allowed)
finished. total time: 1.080s

HBOOT 2.10.0001

after doing some reading I think what happened is that for some reason I have lost root. When I start the HBOOT it finds the PC36IMG file and asks if I want to start the update? I choose yes, and let the file load. After the update is complete I choose no for the reboot so I can go into recovery. Only problem is, there is no recovery. Which is why I think I have lost root and will re-run Unrevoked tomorrow. I think that should solve my issue.

Thank you for your great instructions. If I would have read them a little better to begin with, I would not have had to bother you with my issues.

I made the mistake of doing the 2.3.5 update. I am new to all this. My question is when creating the android folder, is this folder being created on pc or on phone sd card? I am assuming on pc.

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!
all of this will be on your pc. you really do not do much on the phone until you get to the part after you unlock the bootloader.

Ok, what if I have HBOOT 2.10 and S-OFF? Should I re-run unrevoked, or try something else?

if you have s-off but no recovery then all you need to do is install a recovery via a PC36IMG file and have the bootloader install it for you. no need to run unrevoked as you already have s-off.

go to the ROOTING For Dummies Guide.....the Gingerbread Edition and go to the switching recoveries section in the guide. it has a step by step process on how to get recovery onto your phone.

once you have recovery you can then flash a rom like mikg3.0 (which is amazing) and you are good to go.

any questions let us know.

Been reading off this site for the last week, prepping for my root and getting ready. Love the info here!

Having issues with the Superuser though (not after other ROMs at present, just trying to clear off these 'bloat' apps from Sprint)

Followed HTCdev site instructions successfully, then placed the Superuser on root of SD card and flashed, then rebooted.

Superuser app is now on the phone but it doesn't any of the stock apps (Nascar, Kindle, etc) for me to delete.

Something simple I missed?

You have to install a program from the Market (Titanium Backup, for example), that allows you to uninstall system apps. That's how you get rid of the bloat.

Hi, I went to the HTCdev website. I followed the directions, but its telling me to open these files and I can't find them anywhere on my laptop. I have never done anything like this before and I have no one to help me. If you can it would be greatly appreciated!

Open what files? The more details you give us, the easier it'll be to help. At what point are you in the process? The more details, the better .

I noticed somewhere that someone had said to download it, but I have no idea where. I feel like a complete idiot, and i have read this whole thread multiple times and I'm still not getting it.

Did you already download the Android SDK? That's where those files come from. That's one of the things you have to install per "the setup" section of the guide.

In fact, did you download and install any of those items? HTC Sync is what allows your computer to recognize your device when connected. I think you might want to start over and make sure you have everything downloaded and installed. When you have all the files and drivers you need, the instructions should make more sense.

EDIT - From OP:

After installing the Android SDK, did you run the SDK Manager? That's how you get the files you need.

If you installed HTC Sync, your device should be recognized as "My HTC" when connected to the computer,

I need help rooting my wifes EVO that's on 2.3.5 I followed the directions on HTC DEV when I select all other supported models from the drop down, and then hit Begin Unlock Bootloader nothing happens. It's as if the site isn't responding. Anyone have any ideas? I am using WIFI from my rooted EVO, but I don't think that has anything to do with it, because I have full access to the HTCDEV site.

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!
ok so really all you need to do is skip down to the second post and follow directions on how to get recovery. once you have a recovery you can either flash the su file or you can flash a rom.

Mad HTCDev site NOT working for HTC EVO 4G

Hi there,

Just wanna start by saying....long time user, first time poster...

I tried to do this in an effort to unlock my bootloader, and was given a code 173 Check Fail Rule w/ exception.

After being on the phone with HTC for about 2 weeks now, turns out that the EVO 4G is not providing the correct encryption in the Identifier Token and is being rejected.

Now, I'm not sure if I'm the only person having this problem....but it is aggrivating to all hell since it seems now I cannot root my phone.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong....if I am, OP please assist!

Welcome to the forums!!

Well, we need to see what hboot version you have to move forward.

First thing is to turn the phone off, pull the battery, and put it back in. Hold the volume down button and then press and hold the power button simultaneously until the white screen with Andy riding a skateboard appears. This screen is your bootloader, or hboot. Type exactly what you see on this screen and we'll get you fixed up.

Someone will be along that can help u but in the meantime, the reading couldn't hurt.

Thats the newest OTA h-boot. He will need to use this guide. As far as that specific error, I've never heard of it.

check your antivirus software, it might be preventing it from connecting. and you are running the sdk manager, correct? not the and not the AVD manager, correct?

also try running sdk as administrator. right click on the sdk manager exe file and select run as administrator.

Still doesn't work. Whats the AVD manager?

Also, should HTC sync be installed before one tries to unlock the bootloader?

yes htc sync needs to be installed. avd manager comes with the android-sdk r12 windows. it is right next to the sdk manager exe file.
