are there any custom ROMs that allow you to send and receive group messages like an iPhone?

never had an iphone but with go sms you can send the same sms to a group of people at the same time. not sure if that is what you are talking about.
and like rxpert says, it really is not the rom that will have this feature.

On the stock messiging app, when you send a message to multiple contacts, and if anyone replies, the replies get sent to everyone in the group of contacts that were originally listed. Thats kinda group messaging i guess. Works for me.

Group me is a great app! It is available on iPhone, android and I think blackberry as well as dumb phones. Basically you download and set up a group with names and phone numbers. Then the service sends a text to everyone included in the group from a phone number different from your own. Then any time someone texts that number everybody gets it and the name of who sent it. You can either use their app or your regular messaging app. People with dumb phones can also do all of the settings through special text commands to the number. Its pretty cool and works great.

did that just happen in the update released? because I heard about something like that in the update and I tried to install it, but it didn't work on my phone because its rooted

I'm using the stock messaging app that came with MikG3.0 ...Don't accept the update, you could brick your phone or lose root. Just flash a Rom with the update. Try MikG3.0
You know what I'm finding that works basically the same as a group messaging app? Google+. Over the last two weeks I have been using it all the time with my friends. Just set up a circle and go to town. Hopefully everyone has a smartphone. Do they have an app for the iPhone?
The fact that it has push notifications essentially makes it a messenger, and it even has a messenger built in, so there ya go.
