I was wondering about the rooting process of Evo's running the Android Version 2.3.5. I tried to read up on rooting with this version of software and couldn't seem to find any valuable information, or any information that seemed trustworthy for that matter.
If anybody has any information on this, or any links you think that would be helpful, I would really appreciate it.

By following these steps will I still be able to do a backup, saving all the data on my phone (a nandroid backup I believe)? Also, will I be able to flash custom ROM's onto my device?

yes once you unlock the bootloader and install a recovery you can pretty much do anything a normal rooted phone can do.
just keep in mind that the captain's method is more complicated but it will remove the watermark and making it easier to unroot your phone. just unlocking the bootloader will create a watermark and you will not be able to unmark it. so the choice will be yours and we will be here if you need help.
Thanks guys, I really appreciate it. I think I'm going to try and root today so we'll see how everything goes. I'll be sure to drop back by if I have any questions!
Okay guys, I think I'm going to root right after I get out of the library here at school.
About the nandroid backup, will I need to save all my contacts and such before rooting? I'd also like to keep my personal and school e-mail's in tact throughout the rooting process, is this possible?
Sorry to keep dragging this out guys; I still didn't get around to root.
As far as backing up my e-mail and contacts with Google... Both of my e-mail's, school and personal, are through GMail, and I have both linked together so as both go to the GMail App on my device. Will I need to do anything with these before unlocking my bootloader and rooting?
Contacts, however, I am in complete virgin territory. How can I use google to back these up?

each contact you should be able to link it on the phone. you will have to go through it one by one. it has been awhile since i had to do it but i think that there should be an icon that looks like a chain link click on that and then select google (i think, forgive me if i'm wrong).

You can also open people Tap menu then inport export here you can back up to the phone sd card and just copy to your computer. Then when all done rooting move file back to sd card and due import, For some reason tho i think the stock rom backs up or syncs to google any way but i would still back up to the computer just to be safe.

I would highly suggest backing them up to your SD card as well

I used the Import/Export button and transferred to the Google Gmail option, looked in my Gmail account and it only had a fraction of my contacts, some of which are no longer in my phone. Am I missing a step or what?
yeah not sure where the misisng contacts went. what you can do is, go into your gmail account on your computer and see what contacts you have listed there. thet should be the same. if not if you have their info you can just enter them on your computer and then on your phone have it re-synced to google again.
