no worries. read the guide thoroughly first before trying it. also make sure to ask questions as well if you have them.

Welcome to the Forums! WE won't send you off anywhere.

It looks to me like with s-off, you need to install a recovery, install superwipe, wipe well and then flash a rom'

ROOTING For Dummies Guide.....the Gingerbread Edition

Check out the Life After Root portion of the above guide for directions.

Welcome to the forums!!

The hard part is done, you've achieved S-OFF.

Do you have the Superuser App?

All you need for the recovery is to flash a custom recovery. You still have the stock recovery.

To get a custom recovery go here for Amon-Ra:
PC36IMG_RA_2.3.zip

Take the recovery file and rename it to exactly PC36IMG ( don't add the .zip at the end because windows hides extensions ) and place it on the root of your SD card.
Boot to your hboot (white screen with Andy riding a skateboard) your phone will find the file and ask you to update, choose yes. let it do it's thing, then select no to reboot. scrool down and select recovery, it should say Amon-Ra 2.3 at the bottom.

Go here for the Superuser file:
http://downloads.androidsu.com/superuser/Superuser-3.0.7-efgh-signed.zip

Take the Superuser file and rename it to exactly PC36IMG ( don't add the .zip at the end because windows hides extensions ) and place it on the root of your SD card. Remember to remove the Recovery PC36IMG first, so you don't get mixed up.
Boot to your hboot (white screen with Andy riding a skateboard) your phone will find the file and ask you to update, choose yes. let it do it's thing, then select no to reboot.

You should now be completely rooted!!

I will make a suggestion for you to read the rooting for dummies guide life after root section to be sure you understand what to do with full root access:
ROOTING For Dummies Guide.....the Gingerbread Edition

If you have any questions or problems, just let us know.

are you extracting the file. if so do not leave it zipped. and also place it on the root of the card that means no folders, just on the card. and you do not name this file leave it as is and flash it in recovery.

My bad guys, I linked the SU file thats flashed from recovery.

Redownload that file and place on the root of your SD card as is, don't change anything. Boot up into recovery, choose wipe / wipe cache partition and wipe dalvik cache. Go back to the main menu and select flash from SD / choose your SU file and select. Let it do it's thing, then reboot your phone. you should have SU in your app drawer now.

I am totally new at this, I want to root but I am not sure if I can and how hard is it to do? Also I have read in some places you have to wipe out all data. Not really what I want to do but I do need help. I did see a website about 3 steps and not wiping all data? Please help. Thanks

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
if you have 2.3.5 then unfortunately no matter what you do your data will get wiped. you can back most of it with mybackup pro, however. here is the guide:[Revised] Rooting Gingerbread 2.3.5 Dummies Guide

I'm in the same boat. I have reviewed a couple other forums before finding this one. I was driven from those by pointless, sarcastic sticky posts that say things like "Let me Google this for you >> how to root evo 4G". Why run a web site if you're not going to help people, and just direct them elsewhere? Anyway, now I'm here, and it's obvious that this is a much better community.

A coworker told me to use Unrevoked, but it just failed, saying my firmware is probably too new. My EVO 4G is my work phone, so I want to be extra careful. I have no phone of my own, that I can test on first. I'm running Android 2.3.5 and have taken a look at the Dummies guide. I'm guessing the HTCdev method is the one I should use, since it's the recommended one, and I have no idea what S-OFF means.

I don't see the EVO 4G in the list (HTCdev), so I guess I just choose "All other supported models". I installed most of the prerequisites, but can't seem to get to an area where I can get HTC Sync. When I click to get it, it wants me to select my phone, and the HTC EVO 4G is not one of the ones listed. Can anyone advise on what I should do from here? Just get the download from the EVO 3D section? Thanks!

I used a different method so I can't advise, but hang in there a little while, someone will be in that can help you.

And welcome to the forums!

Thank you. I just got my email from HTCdev, will wait to do anything more...

EDIT: Found that the proper HTC Sync version is linked in the Dummies guide. Removing the version from the EVO 3D downloads area, and installing this one instead.

OK, I continued anyway, and said YES to the prompt. Now step 14 says to enter the command "fastboot oem lock". Should I do this? I'd have to pull the battery again, and all that... And the steps don't mention doing that again. Is this an optional step? Thanks

OK, the phone is now unlocked and has recovery. Have to figure out which ROM is the best. Didn't realize there were so many options, and have heard that "Cyanogen" is the best. Any recommendations for what I should go with?

NICE!!!!!try mikg3.0 best rom to start out with. very fast and stable. it is sense 2.1 and sense 3.0 built in.

cm7 is not bad but you have to do alot of extra work to get it right. you will need to flash the gapps file in addition to the cm7 first so that you can gmail and the market among other google apps. also you might need to d the gps qualcomm drivers to get your gps working right. but cm7 or aosp for that matter is smaller and performs better then sense. but that is up to you.

just make a nandroid backup and flash away.

cm7 is not bad but you have to do alot of extra work to get it right. you will need to flash the gapps file in addition to the cm7 first so that you can gmail and the market among other google apps. also you might need to d the gps qualcomm drivers to get your gps working right. but cm7 or aosp for that matter is smaller and performs better then sense. but that is up to you.

just make a nandroid backup and flash away.
Hmm, I went to run the "Quick Boot" app, and it warned me that root access was not detected. ROM Manager warned me about this also (WTF?). How can I verify this? I ran the steps from HTCdev, loaded recovery, and saw no errors...

ROM Manager also says that I need to mount the SD card?

try dl superuser from market? custom roms have it built in but you haven't dl'd one yet.

and maybe shy away from rom manager. do stuff manually from recovery. you have amon ra 2.3?

Yep, Amon Ra 2.3, via the "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img" command. Is there a way that I can check to make sure it's working?

Just downloaded SuperUser... But what do I do with it? When I open it, it doesn't seem to show any options, apps, or anything else.

Sorry for my ignorance.

yeah never use rom manager. it is way too buggy and will cause more issues then they are worth. i would just flash a rom like mikg3.0 instead.

+1 on Mikg3.0

now with superuser on there, try the quickboot thing, when it asks for permission, say yes.

This Mikg download is very slow -- I still have about 50MB left. My phone is at the factory defaults, with Superuser installed. Once I have copied the ROM to the root of the SD card, how do I boot into recovery?

Also, is there some way for me to make sure I have the right (root) access, so I don't mess anything up?

are you doing it on your phone? that will put it in some download folder i think. It needs to be on the root of your sd card, meaning, not in any folders.

That quickboot gives you option to boot into recovery, if not, you have to uncheck fastbboot, found under menu settings power, I think, then hold vol down and hold power down until it comes up, then select recovery.

ROOTING For Dummies Guide.....the Gingerbread Edition

That guide gives all sorts of good info, here is a part about flashing roms

"Flashing

this is all good, but how do i flash a rom or kernel?

good point so here is what you do to flash a rom:
1.first you need the vr superwipe:http://api.viglink.com/api/click?format=go&drKey=1153&loc=http%3A%2F%2Fandroi dforums.com%2Fevo-4g-all-things-root%2F395962-rooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html&v=1&libid=1330215530720&out=http%3A%2 F%2Fdl.dropbox.com%2Fu%2F8709935%2FZZZVR_SUPERWIPE .zip&title=ROOTING%20For%20Dummies%20Guide.....the %20Gingerbread%20Edition%20-%20Android%20Forums&txt=ZZZVR_SUPERWIPE.zip&jsonp= vglnk_jsonp_13302157230201. download it and put it on your card. (optional)*
2.download the rom of your choice and transfer it to your card.
3.go into recovery
4.make a nandroid backup
5.select wipe from the main menu and wipe dalvik cache, cache, and data
6.select install (or flash depending on which recovery you have) zip from sdcard
7.find the superwipe file and flash it.(optional)
8.find your rom and flash it.
9.reboot.

first boot will take a bit longer then normal, so be patient.

*the vr superwipe is an optional step, but i would recommend that you use it. it wipes system, cache, and boot. it wipes those three times. then it wipes the temp files and does that three times. i would not only use this tool to wipe. it should be done in addition to wiping data, dalvik cache and cache. one last thing about superwipe, this will only work with those that have support for amend scripting. only clockwork mod 2.6, amon ra 2.3, and trwp will work. so if you have clockwrok mod 3 and higher you might want to switch recoveries...."

On my phone, I went to the Market and installed Superuser. Should I have done something different?

I have been going thru the Dummies guide, but before I do the WIPE, I want to make sure that I have proper root access. Since ROM Manager and Quick Boot apps both told me I don't have root, I'm wanting to be extra sure.

I now have the Mikg ROM copied to the root of my SD card.

But how do I get into recovery? That is what I am missing. Where are those options? The Quick Boot app says I don't have root access -- "You must have root access to your device to use this software, and no root access has been detected. If you're sure you have root access on your device, click Override to override this warning. Be warned that probably the app will be horribly broken." <------ I just don't like the sound of that.

Are you saying to ignore this warning, and to use the Quick Boot app to reboot into recovery anyway? Then try to proceed with the various steps? If I don't have root access, it will just not let me do anything, and nothing will be broken? Again, this is my work phone, so I want to be extra sure before I do anything.

Thanks!

if you are on the stock rom then fastboot needs to be disabled by going into settings>apps>uncheck fastboot.

Without superuser on there, quickboot won't work either. somewhere in the guide it tells how to flash superuser which is needed for rooted apps to work. Not sure why you couldn't just dl it form market and have it work.

Anyway, it will be in the rom Ocn told you about, so when you get into recovery, follow the steps to nand and wipe and stuff and when the rom comes up after a while, it will take a bit, so be patient, you will have to log into your phone just like when you bought it.

Just thought I'd check back in w/ you guys, to tell you that YOU ROCK! With your help, I had no problem getting everything going. I put on Mikg at first, tried Cyanogen, and am now going back to Mikg. Cyanogen had very cool animations, but a lot of the other stuff looked big and clunky (fonts, etc.). I'm sure that can probably be changed, but I don't have time to mess with it right now. Also, it was missing the many useful Google & HTC apps that I like to use.

Thanks so much for the quick answers and help!

Question... Is there a particular reason that you guys prefer Superwipe over the Wipe function that's built into Amon-Ra?

you do not use it instead of wiping. you use the superwipe in addition to wiping. it just a way to make sure that the phone is clean for the new rom to be flashed into. it just takes a sec and does not hurt. never had any issues because of it. so why fix something that is not broke i guess.
