Angry Been going through a nightmare for 6 hours trying to root. New software update has ruined everything

Can somebody just please please give me a down-to-earth way to re-root my evo 4g? I've unrooted it for the update (yes I know, big f******* mistake. Wish I had ignored it.) All I've managed to do is unlock the bootloader and it currently says S-Off. But my phone is still not rooted according to root-necessary apps. Software specs are as follows...

Android version
2.3.5

Baseband version
2.15.00.12.19

Kernal version
2.6.35.10-g4b48446
htc-kernal@and18-2 #1
Wed Dec 21 16:37:11 CST 2011

Build number
4.67.651.3

Browser version
WebKit/533.1

PRI version
2.33_003

I've been trying various guides and tutorials and tricks and methods and everything I've come across. I'm at my wits end with this crap. I've already lost over 50 apps thanks to bogus guides and really need this re-rooted to use apps that required it. And I used a lot of apps daily that required it. I don't care if I have to go back to the previous software before the update to get it to work. I don't want to be up to date anyway if it means I can't root it!

Please help me out and spare the criticism. I'm livid enough as it is having lost a ton of important info on my phone. Even having it backed up.

Install "busybox installer" from the market and see if that works. The last few roms I've had gave me the same thing with a few apps and that app fixed it.

well that will work if he truly has s-off. kind of unusual to have s-off with hboot 2.18. do you have recovery?

if you go to the hboot screen (power off then press and hold power+vol down), can you report what you see on that screen. also try and select recovery. do you get the red triangle with an exclammation mark? if so then you have a stock recovery. if not then what recovery do you have?

What do you mean android system recovery? Red triangle with phone?

If so, flash a custom recovery & superuser and your good to go.

Sounds like you are rooted with recovery bud. What does it say at the bottom of the recovery screen? Root only apps require the super user app to gain root access, the stock rom doesn't have that app and can't be downloaded from the market afaik. Go to the rooting for dummies guide in this forum and either download the su app or a custom rom which will have it cooked in.

Go here and read the part about life after rooting. It will tell you how to flash roms, etc

ok so if you selected recovery and no red triangle with an exclamation point does not come up and you get a menu then that is called a recovery. like the trashcan man said what does it say at the bottom? if you have recovery then you can just flash a rom and you are good to go. not sure what you tried in the past, but whatever you did, you are fully rooted with hboot 2.18 and s-off. that is really weird, but you are lucky.

the link that trashcan man link to you is a good place to start to learn about the rooted world.

all you need to do is flash a rom. i would suggest that you flash mikg3.0 you can find it here:MikG v3.0 [12/17/2011]

follow the guide to flash the rom. and also i would suggest that you switch recoveries to amon ra 2.3 (if it says on the bottom of your recovery RA-supersonic 2.3 then you have amon ra 2.3). if it says clockwork mod, then i would suggest that you switch your recovery to amon ra2.3. the guide also has a switching recoveries section.

sorry for the late response. it was late and i wasn't thinking clearly anyway. rough night.

i have the usual menu saying Android system recovery at the top and i have a list starting with Reboot system now and ending with Power off. there's an HTC logo in the middle of the screen and at the very bottom it says
Build : RA-supersonic-v3.11-gnm

And if the future..... if you want the update, just flash a ROM thats updated.

NEVER accept an OTA. In fact, uncheck the box so that your phone doesnt even search for it.

go here:ROOTING For Dummies Guide.....the Gingerbread Edition and read the flashing section. this will give you a step by step process in flashing roms.
