After tons of time and energy rooting and getting no benefit other than more space on my phone, everything, and I mean everything, else being worse on the phone, I really wish I'd never done this in the first place. So very, very, very frustrating. I use to really like this phone
Last edited by bupolo; March 10th, 2012 at 01:49 PM.
this is indeed odd... what issues are you experiencing? Your phone should be faster, more responsive and have a HELL of a better battery life not to mention the ability to remove the stupid a$$ bloatware that sprint thinks that evo users cant live without... talk to us goose!!
I'm currently using CM7 and was using Tiamat 3.3.8. 3.3.7 sucked for my phone (battery died in about half a day with minimal use).
3.3.8 was less responsive (I sometimes have to touch the screen twice so it understand I'm selecting something), everything lags, like loading apps and opening text messages. Doesn't connect to bluetooth easily, the GPS jumps all over the place, and Navigation lags. If I try to have navigation on and talk on the phone at the same time, I've got about 10 minutes, then the phone will FC.
The latest? The Recovery mysteriously switched back to some other type of recovery, so when I reinstalled Amon Ra, I can't do anything except load my one and only nandroid from 2 months ago, else it just goes into a bootloader loop (I try to restart and it send me to the bootloader everytime, can't get it to go to the phone).
The phone just sucks on CM7, and it wasn't much better on Mik3.0. I don't have the time to spend reinstalling everything every 3 days to try to find the match that works, I just want my phone to work the way it used to.
that is one weird set of issues man... as far as the nav goes, id stick to sense based roms to avoid having to tinker with the gps fix thats out there (which totally works btw) as to avoid having to spend too much time on it. The word on the street is that mik3.0 roms are super smooth, but im a cm7 guy. Im betting that its your caches that are jacked up and need to be mega wiped. If you go into recovery and do a factory reset(aw hell, do it twice for good measure) then install the rom again, im betting that itll instantly start working better. But the world of root and custom roms does require a it of hands on man. Thats not to say that you need to spend hours a day trolling the forum looking stuff up and all that, but once you start messing around with it and get double the battery life (as i did) then youll likely have an entirely different view on the subject. Anyways, if youre not at all interested in getting your hands dirty (digitally at least) id flash something from miks 3.0 lineup and a custom kernel or something along those lines after having done a factory reset and see where youre at then. Good luck man, and let us know if you have any other questions or need some walkthru type of help.

and to go along with dustwun, it is VERY likely that your phone isnt too keen on the kernel selection. Each evo reacts differently to a kernel. I run cm7 and its flippin awesome. I put the first tiamat kernel released on it, it sucked butt. I put a different tiamat kernel on it, its awesome again. So, anyone telling you which kernel to run as an absolute best combo for every phone is leading you down the wrong path. We can tall you what our experiences are, and you can try em out, but theres no golden combo for every cm7/tiamat user out there. These things are like women holmes, some like beer and a football game, and her twin sister likes wine and cheese... Strange analogy, i know, but hopefully gets the point across

First I see a very grave misconception here. I have seen this misconception quite a bit and that is "Rooting has destroyed my________" you can fill in the blank. I will try to explain this best I can Maybe Capt. will show up and further educate people on what exactely root is.
Ok The Jist of it:
Rooting your phone is really just a fancy way of saying "I've turned Securitys OFF" This means that you have told the hardware to turn off the security that would normally prevent you from being able to change the "Boot, System" Partitions. Unlocking Nand allows you to flash to said system. (hope I got this the right way) Nand is where you can backup, flash, and restore. Having the Partitions Securites off does nothing to your phones ROM or Kernel or Radio's
If your having Problems then they are 1. Rom related or 2. Kernel related problems. These can be caused by several different factors.
1. Improper Wipe of the System before Flashing the ROM. - This is on of the most common problems that I see with Systems. The person did not properly wipe. Sometimes its not the persons fault they have downloaded and flashed Clockwork Mod recovery. This recovery is Known for improper wipes. That is Why Amon RA is Highly Recomended here. Amon Ra 2.3 it just works.
2.Not Properly wiping cach/dalvic before flashing a new Kernel.
3. Bad downloads
4. Bad Transfers (From Computer to Phone)
5. Cause sometimes in life shit happens
The only other thing that will cause problems is an actual hardware failure which again has nothing to do with rooting the phone.
If a Rom is not working as expected first thing one should do is ASK
As Youdoofus has stated Rooting means getting your hands dirty. If you do not wish to go through the hassel then AOSP is not really for you. You are better off with a Sense ROM. MIKG seems to be the prefered. However even with Sense ROMs sometimes you have to get your hands dirty. I hope I was able to solve some confusion as to common misconceptions and basic trouble shooting.
Our Resident RXpert has also written a very useful trouble shooting guide. You can Link to it from my sig and can also link to it from the Rooting Guide. Also In my Sig (Not for 2.18)
If one has problems with something they should ask for help. I am more than confident that anyproblem short of the bootloop of death can be fixed. I'm not so sure that the "Bootloop of Death" can't be fixed however we have yet to find a way and it has only affected a small amount of users.
In response to the OP. Never fear. I have the solution to all that ails you. You can thank me later. Here is a post I made in another thread. Read, read, read. This will fix everything you're having trouble with. I guarantee it.
VERY IMPORTANT - Kernels take time to settle. You will not see the effects of a custom kernel on your battery life for at least two days.
Here is how to solve all your problems.
1) and this is a 100% must. Get Amon RA 2.3. Link is in my signature. If you're messing around with Clockwork you're asking for trouble. Amon RA 2.3 works every time, 100% of the time. It is a flawless recovery and you should be running it on your Evo if you aren't already.
1a) Make sure you're not using ROM Manager and you do all the below steps while in recovery. ROM Manager has been proven to be buggy. Stay away.
2) Every time you flash a rom, you need to wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache and wipe dalvik cache. One time only. Like I said, with Amon RA, it works the first time. No need to wipe anything multiple times.
3) For good measure, download Calkulin's format all zip file and flash this too http://db.tt/emsg8Z8P
4) Now you're ready to flash a rom. Did you check the md5 to ensure it's a good download? If not, be sure to do that as well.
5) Now flash your rom, flash your gapps and flash your kernel (if you want...the kernel is optional)
6) Reboot. Restoring anything with Titanium? Only restore user apps (green colored text). Do NOT restore any system data (red colored text).
This should solve all of your problems. And yes, I suggest Deck 1.3d over any build of CM7. It's flawless, everything works. Yes, Deck 1.3d is technically a beta, but ask anyone over in the XDA thread (or me) and we are all pretty much in agreement that it's superior to the "stable" build. Trust me on this one. The link for that is in my sig too, just scroll down to the download links and you should be able to find it in there. If you have any trouble, I can shoot you the direct link.
I would bet $1,000 fake dollars that the OP is using clockworkmod. Ugh. Amon RA is the only recovery an Evo owner needs. 2.3 is my version of choice. Here is the link if you can't see my signature.
Download the PC36IMG.zip file and put it in your sd root. That means to put it in the top level of your SD, so don't put it in any folders. Then turn off your phone. Once it's powered down, hold vol-down and power until the white screen comes on. When it asks if you want to update, select yes. It will install, then ask if you want to reboot. Select no. Then go into recovery like you normally would.

Ok one more. Stick with the stock kernel on your rom to start. It's not a great kernel but it gets the job done. Once you determine that you like everything, make a nandroid backup and then flash Tiamat 3.3.7 (Aka the LEE kernel, because it kicks ass). It works extremely well for most everyone.
The Following 2 Users Say Thank You to MizzouBrent For This Useful Post:
Ok, well that's probably overkill but it's not hurting anything. Did you restore any apps or anything with Titanium/Mybackuppro or anything like that after you flashed? It's possible that your phone just doesn't like Tiamat for some reason. I would just flash with the stock kernel that is included with the ROM.
The Following 2 Users Say Thank You to MizzouBrent For This Useful Post:
Root didn't mess up your phone, your phone just doesnt like your ROM/kernel combo.
For proof, flash the stock ROM.
Haha! It was the stock rom and problems associated with it, that led me to root in the 1st place! All the issues I've had with root (I bricked my 1st evo by flashing radios, and not reading fully), and I still would never go back to stock!!
Good luck man! Personally...I find cm7 to b quite glitchy... if you really wanna go back to stock.... maybe try a froyo stock rom.... at least on the stock froyo, everything worked well.....

If you realy want the phone the way it was I would just flash back to the latest OTA rooted rom with the stock kernel. I must say that this was the first OTA my daughters evo got (not rooted) that realy did fix everything including battery. She is getting 8 to 10 additonal hours of heavy use totaling like 16 hours on 1 charge. Do this but stay s off and rooted so you can run the rooted apps. S on or s off is going to have no effect on anything except what you can do with the phone. Just my 2c.
The Following 3 Users Say Thank You to mikem0269 For This Useful Post:
Also make sure if you are using an AOSP rom like Deck 1.3d or CM7 to only use an AOSP kernel like Tiamat or Salvage Zen. If your using a Sense rom like MikG or Tommeytomatoes Classic, use a Sense kernel like Chopsuey 9.2.7 or Freedom.

Since you mentioned you went to CM7, if you made a Titanium Backup of all the apps and data if you try to just restore all the HTC sense widgets won't play nice with CM7.
You want to make sure you only restore market apps for the most part not system apps as they don't get along with all different systems.
Hope you get it resolved. MikG3.0, Tommy Tomatoe or the new OTA Rooted rom are all very stable and run well.
If you want lightweight then try NoLimits06's rom. It has most things that aren't needed removed. It's fast, light and has great battery life.

Thanks everyone that posted, I needed some time to calm down. I just loaded a nandroid I had from awhile ago and have been dealing with lag/reboots/etc waiting to have some time to flash a different ROM.
I think I'm going to stick with Mik3. I use my latitude/navigation/gps on a daily basis and don't want to have to be trying to tweek it constantly to get it to work with the GPS fix.
Did Mik3 come out with an updated version of his ROM today/yesterday? If so, is this the download link: MikG v3.0 [12/17/2011] How do I confirm that the download was good? Does he have the newest update for download yet? If so, where do I get that?
I'm just going to wipe everything, factory reset and start over. Just load Mik3 and GAPPS and not mess with a kernel for awhile.
No prob, glad you came back. I haven't heard that the update is out yet. might be out as we speak though.
One thing, you will not need to flash Gapps with Mikg3.0.
I think that is the version of 3.0 that I am running now. Are you going to dl it with your pc and then transfer it to the phone? I think you could check the Md5 of the file and compare it with what you dl, I have had very few bad dl's though.
Let me know if you want to do that checking, I will try to help you figure it out. should be good though.
Good luck, read up on what the guys said, Like MB's directions, and remember not to restore any system apps with TB!

First of all thats why we are here to help. We exist here for that sole purpose.
MikG seems to be the favorite and the most stable from what I've heard. I'm an underdog at heart so never do the popular things I'm just wired differently thats all
DO NOT FLASH GAPPS WITH MIKG Gaps is only needed for AOSP ROMS not for Sense ROM's. Gapps is already included in those. Flashing Gapps may not do any harm but then again if could really screw things up especially if there are version conflicts
Never feel like your asking a dumb question either. We here feel the only dumb question is one that is never asked. If you are not sure of something ask we will provide you with an ANSWER not a "didn't you do a search" seriously we are here to help you not condemn you.

The new MikG 3.1, which has a thread, is based on the new OTA 4.67.
It has what looks to me as the same tweaks and options as MikG 3.0 haD . It's just based on the newest software version 4.67.
Or there are a few other 4.67 Roms posted here. The Nitrous one
If you want something that looks totally stock but has some options with the ability to delete the apps you don't want there is the new Optimized OTA 4.67.
Ok, so I flashed Mik3.1. This is how I did it:
1. I downloaded the Mik3.1 file and ran the Vudu Script MD5 checker to make sure the download was good. I moved it to the SD card and checked it again.
2. I did a nandroid backup.
3. I moved the nandroids, dtapps2ds-2.7.5.3-beta04-signed, PC36IMG (do I still need this if I already have Amon Ra installed?), ZZZVR_SUPERWIPE, and MikG-v3.1-signed to my computer.
3. I partitioned my SD card again so that I could have 2048 for internal storage rather than 1028. I upgraded ext2 to ext3. I did not move everything from my SD card because I've already pulled off pictures and I want a nice clean new everything.
4. I did "Wipe ALL userdata/factory reset"
5. I wiped cache/dalvic cache/data/sdext 3 times.
6. I put newest nandroid, dtapps2ds-2.7.5.3-beta04-signed, PC36IMG, ZZZVR_SUPERWIPE, and MikG-v3.1 - signed back onto the SD card.
7. I flashed superwipe.
8. I flashed MikG-v.3.1
9. I rebooted.
regarding dtapps2ds-2.7.5.3-beta04-signed, I understand that is for DarkTremors, a2sd. You should find that you do not need to flash that with this rom as it is already supported.
as for the PC36IMG file, you will want to rename it if you keep it on your card to keep the phone from finding it when you boot.

Thank you!! If I don't need to use Dark Tremors, what do I need to do to reinstall apps to ext3, or is that all done automatically?
Also, this is the first time I've reloaded a new ROM and it didn't freeze on the first reboot on both the white HTC boot screen and ROM boot screen. So far so good I guess.

Now then, the only way I know to 'see' that the apps are on the sd ext is with Titanium Backup (pro)
When I open the app, at the bottom, there are 4 lines that show how memory is being utilized,
Systom Rom:
Internal:
SD card:
SD card (a2sd): Mostly empty but being used.
Green bars show the usage. The phone, in settings, will report various things, but I understand it might be inaccurate. A2sd supposedly 'fools' the phone. It creates a symbolic link in the phone to the app on the sd card and the phone seems to actually think it is still on the phone.
