Default HTC EVO 4G (Sprint) flashed to Cricket - Can I flash a custom ROM without affecting Cricket flash?

I am newbie to this forum. Thank you for running a this very helpful forum.

I have a HTC EVO 4G (Sprint) which I bought in Jan 2011. Once the contract expired this Jan 2013, I flashed it so that I can use it with Cricket wireless.

Yesterday, I rooted my phone with the stock ROM following the steps presented here . I have the following questions:

(1) In Step 3 in the above link, I did 'stay on stock' since I was not sure about flashing a custom ROM. If I flash a custom ROM, does this affect the cricket flash? I am not very clear about this and googling didn't help. If flashing affects can someone point out a step by step guide to backup and restore the cricket specifics?

(2) Also can you recommend a custom ROM best suited for HTC EVO 4G with cricket? I am looking for ones which are Android 4.0+.

Thank you
Anand

welcome to the forums!!!!!
i moved you to the evo 4g root forum.

1) no it will not ruin your flash to cricket but sms/mms and data may not work. i'm not really sure as to what you will need to get it working though as i have never flashed a phone to another carrier before.

2)the top two roms right now is deck's reloaded and mikg 3.11. you can get them here as well as other roms: {The List} Utilities/Apps/Roms/Kernels for the OG EVO. check out the staff picks for more suggestions as well.

remember to make a nandroid backup just in case data, and sms/mms does not work.

Thank you ocnbrze. I went ahead and flashed using MikG-3.11 and it worked fine. I also tried using Strike (ICE) but it does not recognize front facing camera. So went back to MikG and it worked flawlessly. The only problem I faced with MikG was sudden disappearance of google play store but it was easily overcome with some googling.

I had one more question how do I keep track of when new custom ROMs are released other than visiting forums? I am hooked to the custom ROMs and would love to install the newer Android OS

Strike or any ICS/JB ROM will not have the front facing camera working at all so it's not anything different from a regular nonflashed EVO.

XDA forum has all the updates. A complete and updated listing of EVO ROMs is here:

HTC EVO 4G Android

Note that they all link back to XDA or the forum that hosts the download of the ROM
