Unhappy Newbie F'd up phone

Ok, so I bought a cheap HTC evo 4G to replace the one I broke the screen on. Came "Rooted" so that the volume turned the phone on because the original power on/off switch was supposedly bad. The idiot that sold it to me had all of his information still on the phone!! Contacts, emails, etc. He said he thought he cleared it. so me being an idiot too did a reset on the phone. Now the only way I can turn on the phone is by plugging in the power cord and than unlocking the screen. It has cyngamod or something like that on it right now

ok, so can I root this thing again with the power switch being bad? I just want to be able to turn the thing back on again easily.

should I try getting rid of the "rooted" program or app or whatever it is and see if the power switch is actually bad?

I don't know what to do, and is probably pretty obvious by this post.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

Hey olymon, welcome to our AndroidForums!

Well, the good news is that your phone should still be rooted because you've apparently got a custom ROM (version of Android), i.e., CyanogenMod, installed on it. There must be an app or setting in CyanogenMod that allows you to alternatively use another hardware key to behave like the power button to turn your device on. Perhaps your reset removed this setting? (I've not used a CyanogenMod ROM in years and have obviously not kept up with the latest features).

Anyway, I've moved your thread over to the all-things-root area for you since the root folks should be able to point you in your next likely direction.

Cheers and best of luck!

Thanks Scary!
And hello there olymon

I ran an AOSP rom closely related to CM, and I really do think there is a setting in that rom to make the volume button act as a "screen-on" command.

However, I am a little puzzled...what happens when the phone completely dies and powers off? Or you have to pull the battery for some reason. How do you power it back on if the power button is fudged?

Mikestony, Well, for now I'm just plugging in the phone every once and a while. Hoping to get some kind of fix before I do end up with a totally dead phone that wont start. i was hoping that the screen was ok on this phone and I would just swap it out onto my other phone but the ribbon strip is a different size on this phone versus the first used EVO I had . So I've got to get this one working or it's time to sell it to someone that wants it for parts and get another one. I'm using TING for my provider and they make it real easy to swap back and forth my service between phones.

Unfortunately I can't help with the power button issue, but regarding Ting - to activate a phone with them 99% of the time it must have a stock Sprint ROM installed. So you'd have to get it back to stock, then after activating you can put a custom ROM back on.

Just wanted you to know in case that infulances your decision to keep working on it or sell it.
