Updating PRL/profile went wonky now no data connection
I flashed the new firmware/radios so I could flash MeanROM 1.5. Everything went fine up to and including the flashing of the ROM. I ran fine for a day or so until I tried to update the PRL and profile. PRL updated fine. But when I went to update profile it said vDM Client force closed. And updating profile failed. Now I have no data connecion. Error code 97 and when I try to turn on mobile data it starts roaming. I tried re-flashing the firmware/radios to no avail. Should I contact Sprint as the error message states?

I most definitely don't mention rooting to them. When I had a similar issue with my OG Evo I did and they pretty much said "Well you're S.O.L. have a good day" and hung up. But upon calling the next day without mentioning root, they gladly helped and fixed my problem. Buttheads.
Alrighty, I'll give them a call and see what's what.

Same thing happened to me a few weeks ago which prompted my attempted return of the device to BB.
The fix for me? I waited until I had WiFi access and reattempted the updates, which brought back data. Haven't had any issues since.

Rooted Phone or Not if you ever call them and they claim they cannot help you need to remind them who their paycheck comes from. This bothers me when I hear of this because Rooting had nothing to do with your radio's (updating radios yes rooting itself no.) I pay them way to much money every month for them to cop an attitude because I present a rooted phone. I also am very vocal to them of this fact. I'm sure its now in their system when I call be very helpful and do what ever one can.
I never put up with lousy customer service no matter what the situation. However you should always refrain from volunteering information that is not really needed.

can you tell us what they said/had you try before declaring it dead? because I got myself into an awesome predicament when I reset my profile via the ##data# menu thinking it would improve connection like it did on the old evo, only to have the hands free activation never fire and updating the profile from the main menu not working.
as mentioned above, turning on wifi allowed me to update my profile, but data still wasn't working. Eventually I changed the profile number in the ##data# profile from 0 to 1 and I got data back.
They had me try ##72786# and ##000000# but it didn't bring up the menu it was supposed to. I even tried switching to a stock ROM and entering those codes but nothing happened. Then they tried sending some signal to my phone with no luck.
Should I get s-on again or just make bootloader look like it?

if they're giving you a new phone it probably makes no difference. the only reason to disguise the bootloader would be if you were getting the phone back so you wouldn't have to root again
I just don't want it to look like I ever rooted it. In my experience as soon as they see that they say "There's your problem. We can't do anything for you." Even though my issue was in no way shape or form related to being rooted.
So my plan is:
1. Flash stock unrooted ROM
2. Flash stock recovery
3. Get s-on
Am I missing anything?
EDIT: Can I just flash the latest RUU instead? What else might I have to do? I can't seem to find any way to flash a stock recovery. Or get S-ON, but this I can get around by making it look like it so I'm not too worried. I know there was a way, but I can't find it.

I'm so ridiculously mad now. I went to Sprint. The guy was able to tell it was rooted (I messed up somewhere) and he said verbatim "that's what the problem is, it's because you rooted it." Then went on to say there's nothing they can do but I could take it to a service center if I unroot it, maybe. He didn't seem to understand when I told him that rooting doesn't interfere with the radios. And that it was working fine before whilst rooted. Worst of all he was an a-hole after he found out it was rooted. Like I had personally slighted him in some way. Now I'm afraid that I'm in their system as having rooted and that they won't repair it because of this.

Nah bootloader looks like it's s-on and locked. I went to a different sprint store and they apparently don't know as much about LTEvo. I had to pay $35, but I'm getting a replacement on Monday, thank Buddah! I was planning on telling them that I only rooted to try to fix my problem, but this store didn't notice.
Had the same issue a few days ago, happened out of nowhere. Sprint had to guide me to reset the data profile, which wasn't too hard. My phone wasn't working either, so no voice or text even.
Thankfully the last person stopped telling me to turn it off and back on again, IT Crowd fan obviously.

When technical support tells me to reboot I get so angry. Of course I rebooted, that's the first thing to try!
Luckily I was able to hide root/s-off/unlocked-ness better this time. Took it to another store and got it replaced. Now I have a shiny new LTEvo! I've had it about 15 minutes and got it rooted. Now for the fun stuff, to unlock bootloader and get s-off.

I had this same issue a week or so ago.
I woke up in the morning and while perusing XDA saw there was a new PRL so I updated it and then did profile. That borked my data connection. so I called sprint and they reset it on their end which helped me get texts.
At that time the dialer codes worked so we changed a couple of things and the service rep said it was an issue with the system. So she called me back a couple of hours later and it still wouldn't work. But this time when we entered the dialer codes it booted me out back to the dialer and we couldn't reset. She said I'd need a new phone. So she spoke with her manager and I was going to be sent a refurb. I wasn't to keen on that and she agreed to call me in 3 hours.
I then did a shut down restart again. Cleared cache and dalvik cache then fixed permissions, and turned on my wifi. Once connected to my network I update prl and profile and that fixed everything.
When she called 3 hours later I told her I connected to my wifi and updated and that fixed it. She didn't seem to care. Maybe that should be in their trouble shooting?
Windsor did you do a factory reset? That was also an option but I didn't want to do it as the dialer codes had worked an hour earlier.
I'm on the Pokemon rom fyi.

Oh, I'm looking forward to that guide EarlyMon. I want to S-off before going to a new rom that has the OTA stuff and also to update my firmware.
I feel pretty good about it but I just don't have the time at the moment.
I'm not sure how, but I completely messed up that last phone. Every time I tried updating PRL/profile it said VDM Client closed, then it failed. Yeah, I gotta get S-OFF again. I'll probably do it in Ubuntu. I've found everything Android related goes easier in Linux. A Linux guru you say? I could use a sort of Linux Yoda to train me how to use the Ubuntu force.
Same problem, never rooted, never rom'd, and the username under settings about is blank. I get a VDM message when I attempt over wifi.
Suggestions as alternatives to a refubed? I really HATE the thought of having a refurbed when my phone has been so good (aside from the updated profile failure).

When i took mine in for that problem the Sprint guy told me "it's because you rooted it" and went on to explain I messed up the networking somehow. When I explained that I didn't he just basically told me there was nothing he could do. I was furious.

You already mentioned this more than a few times....the first time you pointed
out it was not a service center....
A non service center sprint store has no one in store trained on deep triage of a device. They really have very few options on helping, rooted or not.
As mentioned before, root is not justification for refusal of sprint TEP repair....and it is policy.
