This really is a whole new ball game, so I elected to make this a new thread (ala MeanRom vs MeanBean, same idea).

For those curious - yes, this is a stock Jellybean rom with a number of fixes and enhancements.

First, Happy New Year to everyone!! ...I haven't been around for a while. Have family in town enjoying the nice weather and busy!

So, EarlyMon, refresh my recollection...

I'm running Viper4G 2.X.X at the moment. What do I need to do in terms of wipes and whatnot to flash 3.0.0??

Also, I was at the XDA link before posting here. The changelog doesn't have anything because it is 3.0.0.0.0.0000000 so is there any list of feature comparisons between 2.X and 3.0?? Just wondering what "upgrades" I can expect...

THANKS!!

SYSTEMUI FC: This happens because of some of the themes in the hub being incompatible with jb. Change back to the internal theme and your FC will go away. We are working on organizing the hub so people can see which is meant for JB and which isnt.

KEYBOARDS from the hub: Do not work at the moment. We are working on fixing that right now.

PLAYSTORE Errors: Clear playstore cache and data, reboot and reopen playstore. If it still does not work you might need to reflash.

SYNC Issues: This usually goes away on its own. Could be a google backend issue, could be something else, tough to tell. Disable autosync. Reboot to recovery and clear cache. Reboot and reenable sync. You may even just try to manual sync the specific account that isnt syncing. This issue will usually go away on its own.

SYSTEM UI Background: We will change it for the next update so that it changes with the skin like its supposed to.

GPS Icon: We are going to edit it for the next update such that it shows when on and doesnt when off.

Twitter for sense: Appears to have been taken out, but we will include in next update.

Wifi icon: Some of the ICS themes that do work in jb seem to do that. We are looking into it.

SDCARD App installation Issues: There seems to be a problem with one of the installers for some people with certain sdcards. We are testing a small and quick fix and I will update this asap.

We have over a thousand downloads and only a handful are complaining about issues so if you have an issue, make sure its not something on your end before asking about it.

You want to be up to date on radio firmware.

Nandroid backup, Titanium / etc.

Full wipe from inside the installer.

Notice that fapple is an install option. (edit - this is going away in favor of a separate flash)

It's Sense Jellybean, only much better.

The new lockscreen is very cool.

Too many under the hood tweaks to name.

New boot animation may be reminiscent of Viper3D, same developer.

3.0.1 breaks fapple (separate framework.jar file required for that), update hopefully later today.

The reason why (which we should have thought of sooner) is that there are basically 2 versions of the ROM (fapple and non-fapple). This means that every OTA needs to be an AROMA OTA (not something we really wanna spend time doing, to be honest). So, going forward, all OTA updates are going to be non-fapple. This means, if you're using Fapple, it will break Fapple upon taking the OTA and you will have to download the latest viper-Fapple zip from the thread and flash it.

I hope you guys understand that it more than doubles our workload in some instances (still a PITA cause we have to keep up with 2 sets of framework changes). While we could include Fapple by default, not everyone wants that. So this is the direction we are going to go from here on out.

Thanks

I thought with Fapple was the preferred configuration for users?

What do I know? Not too much, apparently.

I wonder what is easier to do, make a zip that fixes fapple after an ota or one that removes it?

Too bad it creates extra work for them.

No, you have it right, fapple is a really well-liked configuration.

But the decision finally came down to guaranteeing stability.

Here's situation we have (let's see if I can get spaces to work for my ascii art) -

Code:
         Stuff from HTC
           / \
 fapple team Team Venom
         | |
     fapple Viper4G
         \ / |
     Viper4G work |
           on |
         blending |
             \ |
          Viper4G w/fapple
Each time we have a big enough release from HTC, both teams have to make their parts work.

Then, in addition, Team Venom has to make the fapple changes work with the Viper4G changes.

Anyone makes even a minor boo-boo and it's like unwinding spaghetti to find and fix bugs.

Staging it out ensures higher quality, higher confidence in testing, and faster delivery.

That's why it's going to be done that way.

Hiya...couple few question(s) X TEN....of course I have questions!

First, with regard to radio firmware updates, is this what you are suggestion to do??:

3.16.651.3 HTC EVO 4G LTE radios, firmware, PRI available

If so, and I'm S-ON like I am, then I'm not going to be too happy with the S-ON method link they have there am I?? I would imagine updating the radios and firmware is suggested but, perhaps, not necessary??

On to other things...I also noticed that when I first flashed Viper4G 2.X I did NOT do the fapple thing NOR did I do the lag fix. Now EarlyMon told me that I "missed the boat" with the lagfix having not flashed/installed what I needed at the very beginning of flashing 2.X but I do not recall if fapple was something I could have done later after-the-fact.

So my question(s) now: is there any lag issue in the latest 3.X ROM?? If so, do I have to do what I didn't do last time?? If so, what do I have to do??

And with regard to fapple. Does it behoove me to wait for the full ROM v.3.0.2 referenced above if I want fapple?? Or does it not matter??

THANKS!!

Default Re: [ROM] Viper4G 3.0.0 and beyond

Lag that some experienced was due to a built-in contacts database bug from HTC that only one happened on the last ICS update.

Jellybean doesn't have it, so there's nothing to worry about on that.

You can flash 3.0.1 and then add fapple at any time, no big deal.

Yes, today brought new radios, yes they're compatible with 3.0.1.

Due to the number of uncertainties at this stage, I recommend not trying for them in any way whatsoever if you're s-on.

Do NOT follow Pocketables advice to look at what was done in last September, do similar and then let them know if something went wrong.

The big OTA that hit today is one that I started tracking in Europe last month (I've disassembled that and today's). It patches and touches so many things that I doubt seriously that any root ota could handle it, so, not out of the question to expect to have to do a full rom flash when that's brought in to Viper4G - along with a new matching fapple for that. No idea on an eta, will let you know here when it happens.

Did I miss any?

Confirmed, do not try to update your firmware to the latest if you are s-on.

Update roms all you want.

Okay, so still being "S-ON" will I need to flash the kernel separately or will it flash when the ROM is flashed?

Default Flashed 3.0.1 - Unfortunately, the process com.android.phone stopped - uh oh...??

Hiya...

I seem to have a problem...but now might be OK...??

Downloaded and installed 3.0.1 through the "install" option in TWRP 2.4.0.0 recovery. Did not do anything custom...

Process with full wipe ran, said install was successful, rebooted phone, HOWEVER, never made it to the home screen. Instead got the following message:
Unfortunately, the process com.android.phone has stopped
I had the option to hit "OK" but just went right back to the above message. Screen would turn off and go to sleep. When I would wake the phone with the power button, I would still see the above message.

THEN, on its own, the phone rebooted to the Viper bootup screen that I saw after the flash of the ROM. After this 2nd reboot following the continuous error message above, the phone reached the home screen!

Is this "normal"?? If not, any explanation what happened or need to be concerned??

Gonna reboot into recovery and make a nandroid backup and see...

THANKS!

Try doing the wipe in twrp and not the aroma wipe

So, boot into recovery, wipe data through TWRP, then install the ROM without wiping in the flash options??

And I have another issue...but seemed to work the second time I tried after a reboot.

At first, I couldn't seem to add a Google account. Type in account name and password, says "sign in successful" and I have option to sync various items (contacts, calendar, etc.). I click next/OK...wait...and then account it NOT indicated.

I then rebooted, tried again, and it worked...!!??

I think I'm going to reflash the ROM...

Just in a quick hurry free my phone...

Some initial process will bail and complain on the startup, due to the rom not chatting with HTC, please see the XDA thread FAQ, that's normal and ok.

The installer includes the super-wipe equivalent, no worries trusting it and skipping the TWRP wipe.

When this Rom was first launched I was wiping in TWRP, then wiping in the installer. Seemed to make weird things happen. It doesn't make sense to me, but once I stopped wiping from the recovery and I let the Viper installer handle it, it all worked flawlessly.

Interesting...I only had problems with the Viper installer (twice) and didn't have a problem wiping first in TWRP. Well, "didn't have a problem" is relative because, as you know, I erased my entire Titanium Backup folder on the internal storage!!

Installed early with no problems. The only thing is now I can not turn the vibration feedback on my phone on. Is this a JB thing?

I also get an htc error after boot. Doesn't seem to bother anything tho.

Did you install 3.0.1?

What's the error, any details?

Vibe and haptic feedback ought to be working. Did you wipe from aroma/install?

Is it just vibrate or haptic feedback in particular apps?

3.0.1 haptic doesn't work at all. Vibrate feedback is greyed out in all menus. Can not select or deselect. Everyone I boot it asks if I want to send report to HTC.

Default Question about updating firmware

Hi Everyone.

I am ready to go to this new version. I believe I should update my firmware/radios first. I have never updated radios on this phone before. I am s-off and hboot 1.15.

I just want to confirm that I can use the full firmware zip that is at the top of the mikmik page (where the link here sends me). There is some stuff at the top of that page that makes me wonder if I have to be hboot 1.12 to use this, but I think it is also true that if you are s-off, your hboot version doesn't matter. I was raised in the public school system, so I don't always trust my reading comprehension skills.

Thanks!

Your hboot version won't matter. You're s-off so flash away. Just remember with the firmware on themikmik, ALWAYS upgrade never downgrade. That turns your phone into a brick.

Reflashed the Rom after wiping in twrp and then again in aroma. Haptic works now but HTC error is still there. No big deal if it doesn't cause anything else.

Yes, the one at the top of the page is the most recent update. it's listed as 3.16.651.3 JellyBean OTA - LATEST.

Download the file and rename it to PJ75IMG.zip exactly, place on the root of the SD card (not in any folders). Power down, and do the volume down and power button combo to get to the bootloader. Volume up to update, reboot.

Correct, S-off is S-off, is S-off.

Brickage can occur with downgrading firmware, do not attempt. I believe the Cap'n posted it is possible within a certain set of rules / environment, but for the average user (me) it'll end poorly.

WHAT!!

Did you skip any firmware updates inbetween?

There is a problem trying to update to the latest firmware if you didn't load the one before. I was not aware of that previously.

I'm sorry BigE, I feel like crap now.

I downloaded the latest radios but was having problems, took 5 tries just to download. The phone has been acting very weird lately, download issues, placing calls on it's own while I am in a call using Bluetooth with the phone sitting on my console, signal for everything has gone to nothing, time and location issues, all kinds of problems!

No worries, I know the dangers, actually surprised this is my first, I started with the Hero.

That's total crap BigE, sorry. I know Iowa is selling his LTE, might want to get in contact with him.

On topic.
3.0.1 load ended in epic fail. Wiped within aroma installer, full install. Wiped dalvik and cache before loading #fapple. Booted up fine, worked great until I tried to restore with Titanium. Would not restore for anything.

Complete wipe and reload within Arima, this time I did not install #fapple. Loaded fine booted fine, seemed ok. Wrong!
Epic wakelock problems, titanium wouldn't load again. Then after a few hours screen wouldn't wake up when power is pressed. Complete dead.

Did a forced power cycle and volume down to get to bootloader, restored my 2.x nand. All is fine now.

I'm going to redownload the Rom, and start fresh again.

Sorry to heat that, I'm sure you were looking forward it as much as I was.

I am trying to figure out which way to go since I have to get something today, this is my business phone and I can't afford to be down even for a few hours.

I have insurance that I keep for loss, theft or accidental damage but this was my fault so it looks like I will be stuck paying full price for a new one. My experience with the Evo radios may push me into a an S3 or Note 2.

I had problems too with 3.0.1!

I wrote above in this thread that I was experiencing what seemed like a "bootloop" after install and phone processes that were stopping. I couldn't even get to the home screen. I was able to force-power down and get back into recovery to reboot but still problems. Rxpert83 suggested wiping in TWRP rather than only through the installer (though EarlyMon soon thereafter indicated that some of what I was experiencing was "normal" with the phone not being happy with communications while the ROM loaded/settled in).

I did what you did...flashed a recent 2.0.2 nand and was back to where I started. Wiped in TWRP pursuant to Rxpert's suggestion and then tried to flash 3.0.1 again. Was NOT too smooth...different problems this time...took forever to get to home screen! I knew the phone was on but there was NOTHING on the screen...just like the "perimeter glow" of the LCD when I viewed at certain angles. At this point I had yet to see the Viper startup splash animations I was expecting so I force-shutdown/rebooted and also tried recovery with cache wipes...still nothing!

I then got back into recovery and reflashed the room (with ONLY the install wipe I believe) and THAT worked finally! Been up and running for day and half and seem to be OK....???

When I just had the phone "on" without NOTHING but the black glowing perimeter screen, perhaps I could have just left it and it would have eventually booted. It was just a VERY long time...probably 15 minutes or nothing...that I didn't think was right. My re-flash in recovery seemed to have down the trick...or perhaps I just got lucky!
