Default Help using Handbrake to put Vids on EVO

I have "The Hangover" sitting on my computer. I converted it to .MP4 using handbrake, and it plays back just fine on my computer. However, when I put it on my phone, I hear the audio, and the player is playing (it shows the correct movie length and lets me jump from part to part of the video) but all I see is a BLACK SCREEN!

Does anyone know what might cause this? I used the "Regular - Normal"" preset on the right side in Handbrake (my first time using it). Size is 672x272, Anamorphic is "Strict", Cropping is "Automatic", video filters are all OFF, Video Codec is H.264(x264), Framerate is same as source, and I chose constant quality 60.78% RF:20.

Anyone have any idea what's going on? I just ordered an HDMI cable online so I reallyyy want to get this working.

I had a similar thing happen when I helped a friend download a video for him to approve at work. The Video was MP4. I downloaded Astro File Manager and was able to rename the file - changing the extension to M4P or M4V (I can't remember because I have since deleted the file) But this worked. The file played no problem.

So I would try one of those extension just by renaming it. Don't export again unless you find problems with renaming it.

I've tried viewing them in the gallery and with Flikie Video Player. Do I need a 3rd party app to view them? Will this still work with HDMI out?

If it's encoded correctly, no, shouldn't need a 3rd party app. I have a .MP4 of Shutter Island that works with default video player.

BUT, search MP for Rockplayer and give that a shot. Not sure it supports HDMI out yet.

Rockplayer supports Divx, mkv, avi and others. It was in beta and NOT on MP until just the last couple of days.

This output data from MediaInfo. Not sure it will help.

Okay! I got the videos to play property with RockPlayer when they are in the .mp4 format. Great quality! Thanks.

However, I am still concerned about how I am going to hook this up to the TV. Is this only possible through the regular gallery player?

as of now, yes. And FYI, if you are going to watch movies on a tv, you should use a higher resolution, like 720p. If not, they will not look good on a big tv.

Glad you got it working.

As noted by Sitlet, if you encode a rather small resolution movie, it will look like crap on a big TV.

Okay, well stupid question, but where do I get higher quality videos? I downloaded the ones that I've tried so far, but maybe I should try ripping a DVD then see if that plays on my phone in the regular gallery with its higher res?

If you want higher resolution videos, you need to rip straight from the blu-ray. DVD will provide OK files, but they are still smaller than the 800x480 resolution of the Evo screen, so they are getting enlarged.

Ughh!! I just got a 1280x544 video in the .mp4 format at 1753kbps and I thought it would work but still a black screen! Once again, works in RockPlayer but not in Gallery. This is so annoying why is this only happening to me =(

Did you use handbrake with the correct settings? Download MediaInfo, open the file in there, and copy and paste the results here. Then we can see what is wrong with the file.

There is your problem. The evo can't play high profile formats. Before the latest HTC update it can't even play Main 4.1 profiles. Even that is a crap shoot. Only baseline profiles are guaranteed to play.

Yep, has to be low profile for a guarantee play. In Handbrake, if you want an easy method, use one of the iPod Touch/iPhone presets then adjust the resolution as you need. That'll preload all the settings to low profile. You can tweak the bitrate if you want, but leave the advanced video settings alone since messing with those can change the profile level. Audio is handled a bit differently, so you have more flexibilty on that.

The Evo can handle suprisingly high bitrate settings (there's a post about it *somewhere*), but just needs the baseline profile to really work right in the default player.

Yep, change the profile from High to Baseline. Also, it shows the file a little over 2gb, that can make it not play. You may need to re-encode at a slightly lower bitrate, or just split the file in two.
