Default Downloading apk files

I hard reset my phone a couple days ago and now whenever i try to download a .apk file it says "the content is not supported on the phone. no applcatin can be found to open this files. do you still want to download it?" before the hard reset i was able to download and open apk files with ease. any suggestion?

1) Do you have a file manager on your phone such as Astro?
2) Where are you downloading them from? Are you sure they have an .apk extension?

yes i have astro file manager and i am downloading it from 4shared.com. I have downloaded apps here without a problem before i reset my phone.

Are you sure you're not getting .bin files. That seems to be happening to a lot of people lately.

actually when i do download it they do come as .bin files. what does this mean?

Try renaming the extension to .apk.
