Default wifi issue -ever fixed?

I just got the Evo a few days ago and it has TERRIBLE wifi reception in my house. If I'm right next to the router it will have full bars, but once I get 10 or more feet away it immediately drops and hovers around 0-1 bar. Also, there is a big difference of signal when I'm holding the phone vs when its sitting on a table. I have it set to switch to 3G when there's no wifi, but it doesn't always switch/doesn't switch fast enough and I find my phone telling me there's no network connection very often. It's gotten to the point where I turn wifi off and just leave 3g on because its mor reliable.

I've searched and found a lot on this subject, but most were all last updated when the Evo came out in June. Has there been any update to this or a fix or anything? It's really starting to make me mad that I can have any other device get full bars and my Evo's connection continually goes on/off.

Are other people's still this bad? Should I take it back? I ordered a case, will it help with the holding problem?

Thanks!

Welcome to the forums!

Please report back your software level - home screen -> Menu -> Settings -> About phone -> Software information ... just the first three digits in the Build info will do, or the Android version at the top.

You might try using Wifi Analyzer, free in the Market - surprisingly, I've cleared a few problems like this where the real reason was the overall wifi signal getting hosed by neighbors sharing the same channel.

I actually just used that app yesterday. Found out my router was on the same channel as two others in my building. Switched it to an open channel, and now my speeds have gotten better.

For the OP, I believe the wifi strength was fixed with an update at least 2 months ago, so I dont think that could be the problem. Try the Wifi Analyzer, and if that doesnt show anything, your router may need to be reset.

Build #: 3.70
Android 2.2

I've actually already installed Wifi Analyzer and it says the channel is fine Other computers/iPods get great signal all throughout the house, but my Evo in the same exact location will go up and down and often drop out.

It's not a design issue - the Evo ought to behave as you'd expect.

I'd try a factory reset and if that doesn't solve it, take it back for replacement (unless somebuddy had a better idea).

home screen -> menu -> settings -> SD & phone storage ... last option

That has a side effect of wiping out your data on the phone. As you've only had it a few days, I'm thinking you don't care but if you do, backup instructions are here:

yup..do as he say then take it back if it's a no go. I have great wifi signal even at the furthest points of my yard nearly 75-100 ft away from the router. ( I also keep my router in the attic though)
