Hello to all of the HTC Evo and Android OS gurus. I am in dire need of some help.

My HTC Evo (non-rooted, stock but with ADW Launcher and Go Launcher) has a notice in my status bar that states, "Low on space: phone storage space is getting low."

I've deleted all browser history and frequently visited pages; also deleted the data for the browser which took away my Sprint news homepage. After doing that the notice is still there.

Deleted a bunch of applications (which to me weren't doing anything to phone). Moved whichever apps that I could to the micro SD as well. Still getting the message. Even tried just plain old shutting off the phone and pulling the battery for 10 minutes.

Now when I click on the notice it takes me straight into "Manage Applications." The first thing at the top of my list is Contacts Storage. Here is what is states:

Application 0.00B
Data 192MB

Options available are "Force stop," or "Clear data."

Now here is the funny part. SD card-Total space: 7.40GB; Available space: 6.70GB.

Internal phone storage-Available space: 42.04MB

Here is what I have installed on my phone, apps wise besides the stock stuff that comes preloaded onto the phone:

I had the same issue that you are having. I have also found other people having the same issue, the only way that I and the others fixed this was to do a factory reset on the phone.

So basically a factory reset would delete everything on my phone and go back to what the phone was like "out of the box?"

I would have to re-download all of my apps and input all of my contact again?

You were right BrianJB. The factory reset did work. Thankfully I had listed all of the apps that I had on my phone in this thread so that I could re-download all of them.

When I did the factory reset, I found out that an app (Socialite beta) I had downloaded had created over 7,000 duplicate contacts on my phone.

Really?, Thats strange. I never had that app on my phone, but we had the same issue. I wonder if another app I had downloaded at some point launched duplicate files somewhere in my phone.

But I am glad that the factory reset worked for you.

I tried everything I could find to clear the internal EVO memory short of doing a factory reset, the pain of which I did not care to experience. Clearing cache, moving apps to SD card, removing apps... no joy really... got from 10MB of free memory all the way to 25MB. Wee-wee! I tried calling Sprint tier 2 advanced support. Their advice: "this is a known issue on the EVO. The only fix is to do a factory reset - she gave me the codes to do that. The Ah Hah moment came from checking menu - settings - applications - manage applications - all (located at the top of screen) - menu - sort by size. Up at the top was the Mail program showing that it used 275MB. Clearing its cache and even force closing did not free up memory. So I deleted the email account completely and got my memory back. Then I reinstalled the mail account and voila! 300MB of free internal memory, no more "low storage space" error message and all is well with in the EVO world again. This may not solve all such problems, but I'd definitely try it before doing a RESET. Why the heck doesn't Sprint come up with a decent email app? You cannot even remove their app from an unrooted phone.

There are 3 options to resolve this
1. Get rid on unnecessary apps.. duh
2. Do a soft reset on your phone to recover from apps with memory leaks
3. Move apps to the SD Card instead of phone

Step 3 is the best and permanent solution. The key is how to do it without using Apps2SD or rooting your Android phone. You do not want to void your warranty by rooting your phone. Found this detailed article with step by step instructions and pictures on how to do this. Been banging my head for over 2 months now. one thing i found out is if you have facebook clear the data once in a while. My facebook blew up to 50mbs.

Another thing is with K9 mail if you have it make sure you store the email on the sd card instead of phone.

I don't know if anyone has had this problem, but my internet data keeps getting bigger. This was not a problem before Gingerbread. It is a big problem now. Clearing the cache does not help. For some reason its not clearing. I have to clear the data just to make sure my memory does not get too big. I have already done a factory reset. This did not help with the internet data problem. But it did free up alot memory. Anyone else have this problem?

I have the same problem quite frequently. I've found that the best way to handle this is to go to manage applications, choose email app, clear all data. This will remove all email accounts from your phone. You will have to re-establish your email accounts, but it will get rid of the message and save you from having to do a factory reset.

I'm looking for a bug fix that does not include a factory reset. I'm tired of this blanket solution. There should be no need for a nuclear option to find a way for a user to solve a ballooning data issue caused by an app.
The option to clear data within the app manager is not available to those of us on GB. ALSO, this is a stock EVO 4g, and I would prefer not to get the standard "root your phone" answers so many like to drop in these forums just to show off that they have rooted.
If a solution includes use of the Android SDK, but not for root users only, that would be fine. Thanks in advance for any help offered.

I had the same message continually popping up on my Evo, even though I've relocated all movable apps to the SD card, don't have facebook, and use Gmail. What finally fixed this for me was deleting my old text message threads. I would not think that they would take up that much memory, but it took quite a while to get rid of them once I selected 'delete all'.

I was having the same problem. I deleted A LOT of text messages from handcent SMS and the text app that comes with the phone and a lot of space suddenly became available....or just clear all data.

I have the same problem with an att avail. Factory reset does nothing. As for apps backup with my backup pro. And for loose apps that you don't want to rebackup with my backup pro use "App Backup & Restore" from the market. So easy. And if you factory reset no need for data or wifi all the apps are on your sd card. Just redownload "App Backup & Restore" and then you're good.

As for factory reset no good. Something is def wrong. 130mb space internal (not sd card) and after installing mybackup pro down to 108mb. No way my backup pro uses 22mb space. In market it says 2 or 3mb only. So something is wrong.

Go into the Market and download diskuasge app. It will tell you what is using space on your phone.

I have that The only problem is it says app storage and storage card (sd card). But no internal memory. None of the apps do.

That still doesn't explain what happened. Disk usage says 1023k so 1mb for my backup pro.

So how did I go from 130 to 108mb??

Factory reset and the only thing I installed was mybackup pro. Nothing else. Doesn't make sense.

hey, im having problems deleting messages on my phone. it freezes and wont delete messages and i have every single txt since i got the phone. which is about 20 thousand messages. how can i delete them to speed my phone up?

Within the last 1-2 hours, my contacts storage has shot up from around 30 MB to 47 MB. When I caught this, I cleared all data under Facebook, made sure all my contact syncs were off (which they were), and yet it continued to climb! It's even doing it with wifi off! I did a few restarts but no good. Now I have the annoying "low storage" icon. Last week, I accidentally exported my contacts so they disappeared but was able to import them back. At that time, my contacts storage was around 10-12 MB. Why the huge jump? And why won't it stop?!?!

I have seen this before, and I've never been able to pinpoint what sets it off. Sometimes its a rogue app, sometimes its the stock Rom acting up.
The best thing to do in my opinion is perform a factory reset. Go to the market and install sms backup and restore or something similar and backup your messages, if you want to, and make sure your contacts are saved as Google contacts. If they aren't, open the people app and hit menu / import / export / export to sd. This will save your contacts to your sd card.
Then go under menu / sd and storage / select factory reset.

This will completely wipe your phone. It will return it to the condition it was when you took it out of the box. You'll have to redownload all your apps, etc. Also redownload the backup app you used earlier and restore your info.

This "should" fix your issue. This is probably the easiest solution if you aren't a rooted user.

I too had this problem, cleared FB and problem solved. Went from 32mb free to 103mb free. I was also having a problem with sync. As soon as I cleared FB, my sync began to work again.

I have the evo 4g from sprint & am not sure what is eating up my internal storage. The logical answer someone will reply with is too many apps, but I do not have that many, constantly delete them & the apps that I do have are all moved to my sd card. Well except for the ridiculous apps that sprint keeps on your phone like blockbuster & nascar.

It says I have 383mb used and only 43mb free for my internal storage. Where as my sd card is 837mb used and 6.7gb free.

What other options can I try to free up space? I just exported all of my contacts to my sd card, then deleted all my contacts from my phone & then imported them back in. I thought maybe my contacts were on my phone but that did not change it from 43mb at all.

The only thing I can think of is maybe its my text messages? Anyone have any ideas?

Erase text messages/stored emails.
Clearing cache in the apps can help free up space as well.
If your not rooted, thats about all you can do. Sadly when you transfer apps to the SD card it only transfers part of the app. Our old EVO's only have so much internal memory...

If you root the phone you are able to put the whole app on the SD card if you partition it...

As an example: I have lots of very big games installed, and I still have 303MB free on the internal memory of the phone.

thank you. i only have 6mb of emails on the phone as i have my phone set to erase emails every day. is there a way i can see how much space is being taken up by text messages? that could definitely be an issue.

my phone is not rooted, but maybe thats the next step.

I have deleted about 2,000 total text messages from about 10 different people & it has not changed my space issue at all. In fact I actually have slightly less space available now then I did before I deleted the text. Does reformatting really clear up this issue? Or would it just bring me back to the same point once I reload all of my apps?

I tried to find a way to free up memory on my HTC Evo 4G all over the web with no luck, other than a hard reset on the phone or deleting apps. I also tried to find a way to delete 'stock' apps that took up space, but I didn't use. Nothing freed up a lot of space, so I decided to 'Uninstall' Updates to all the apps I did not use but could not delete. It freed up over 100MB of internal memory, often opeing up more free space than the app was reported to be. Here are the apps I uninstalled updates to and opened up 100MB:

Amazon MP3
Sprint Football
Blockbuster
Nascar
Nova
Qik
Kindle (I use but the update added 10MB)

Be sure to uncheck automatic updating for all of these apps as well, otherwise they will update immediately...

Just my two cents....

I too am having Storage space problems.

One app I use that seems to help a little is Android Assistant.
It has a program feature that includes an App2SD function. It also has a Clear Cashe function and a System Clean function.
Of course all of the functions I mentioned can be done through the Setting Menu, but Android Assistant makes the process easier.

Also I agree with the previous poster, never use Automatic Update. My reasons are that Auto Update has always caused my phone to freeze with all of the apps trying to update all at once. Also, by forcing all the apps to Manual update, I have been able to avoid updating apps I don't use such as Facebook, Blockbuster, Kindle, and Amazon MP3.
